I have been to this theatre many times the first film I saw there was “No Way Out” with Kevin Costner and I fell in love with the large curved screen. It look the biggest and can be more appreciated from the balcony section. The auditorium itself is small but intimate and to me can accommadate high end films. i’ve seen “Mississippi Burning, Any Given Sunday and a day after the movie priemiere was held there I saw "Fatal Attraction” there. When I fist went there the drapery on the walls and the curtains were sky blue and then when Loew’s remoldeled most of there theatres they went to red and grey like the Astor plaza which went from beige and brown to red. yes the curtains do poen and close but they show those stupid slides I wish they had the same throw problem here as well so they can close the curtains. although they do close them at the end of the last showings of the night and probaly open them on the matinees for the day. Well again although I don’t consider this as a movie palace but this theatre along with the Beekman,Paris,the cubby holes of the 85th st east and that theatre on Broadway and 61st or 62nd street I forget the name of it, the more popular and the biggest of all mentioned in this comment Zigfield (excuse the spelling.) are the only remaining single screens in Manhattan.
A few years back, Loews attempted to sublease the Tower East/72nd Street East, but, thankfully, those efforts failed.
It must have cost Sony Theatres (Loews) quite a bundle to change all the signs from Loews to Sony and finally back to Loews on all of the Marquees. I think the last of the Sony Theatres were the Lincoln Square and the Metreon, and I heard Loews Cineplex owed Sony a lot of money for the use of the Sony Name, so they had to give up using it.
It should be noted that the name was Loew’s Tower East, because the name of the condominium building of which it is part is Tower East. The entrance to the Condo is on 72nd Street, where the entrance to the old theatre had been. In the early 90s, when Sony got involved signs were changed to ‘Sony Theatres Tower East’. A resident of the condominium, apparently an executive of Panosonic or JVC (a rival of the Sony Corporation) made an issue of having the name Sony associated with the name of his residence. The landlord prevailed upon Loews/Sony management to either remove ‘Sony’ or ‘Tower East’ from the sign, so they changed it to “Sony Theatres 72nd Street East”. When Sony got un-involved and signs were changed to Loews again, they kept the 72nd St. East name, despite my suggestion that they go back to Tower East. But to everyone who has known that theatre for any amount of time, though, it will always be the Loews Tower East, regardless of what the sign says.
