Hello-
if the Dome showed a 3 panel print in 2012 can’t they remaster a Blu-ray disc of it? I’m assuming if the print was in good enough condition to be shown commercially its in good enough condition to use for an HD transfer.
I saw it at one of those MGM kids' matinees they had in the 70s. The print was old and the joins clearly seen. I was not impressed. However I’m sure a beautiful Cinerama print would be a revelation.
In 2012 the Dome showed Brothers Grimm in a 3-strip print owned by an Australian collector. It had a 15 minute breakdown in the first 5 minutes after the credits, but after that it played flawlessly, and it was beautiful. I feel privileged to have been able to see it.
Wouldn’t Turner just show a 35mm copy?
Hello-
to Ed S.– thanks for your reply. my point was simple. I had always been told the 3-panel negative was water damaged beyond repair end of story. but apparently that’s not the case. so the problem so to speak is not the condition of the negative but Warner Home Video spending the $$$ to properly restore it as they' did HTWWW. that’s what I was trying to point out.
speaking of theatrical exhibition. what print was shown at a Cinerama Festival at the Dome in Hollywood a few years back. or for that matter how is Turner Classic Movies able to air it?
Big joe, I’d wager the studio just doesn’t see the economic gain in spending the time and money to repair and restore the damaged negatives. Would be nice to have a restored smilebox DVD edition – and dare I say theatrical exhibition – but I’m not sure there is as much clamor for that flick as there may have been for HTWWW (apologies, snaps).
Hello-
after Warner Home Video’s immaculate restoration and HD
transfer of How The West Was Won I was eagerly awaiting
the same for The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm.
after a few years and zippo I did some inquiries and was told the 3 Panel negative had suffered water damage that was beyond repair. but is it? in the trivia section on the IMDB pg. for the film it paints an entirely different picture as to how “damaged” the 3 panel negative is.
The late 60s in a nutshell. From Loew’s State big budget roadshow to a year and a half later sex comedy at the Orleans. Well there was a Radio City comedy/drama in between.
In the NY Daily News, the word Humppe was displayed in their movie ads as H——–. The Times was more liberal, and showed the actual word.
In my younger and more vulnerable years I saw a Playboy pictorial about “Can Heironymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness?” and although I was intrigued, alas I have never seen the actual movie.
Which opened, by the way, down the block from the Capitol, at the Orleans, formerly the stage of the Strand theater…
By the way, vindanpar, Anthony Newley fans would say that one is a cinch to figure out!
Mike who cried in your cornflakes? So grouchy. If you are familiar with roadshow films is it that difficult to figure out what these long titles are? It’s not like CHMEFMHAFTH.
My Roman Empire bluray is Paramount Japan. I haven’t opened it yet but except for the credits it is all in japanese. The only one that was region 1 and affordable.
Hello-
to vindanpar- if you got the same Blu-ray of The Fall of the Roman Empire that I did you’re bound to ne disappointed since its not in the correct aspect ratio.
WTF. PLSWATGI. TAU-FWTAS…
(What the f-ck. Please let’s stop with all the goddamn initials. There are user-friendlier ways to abbreviate something…)
I got that TFOTRE bluray. Haven’t seen it yet.
Hello-
to Ken Roe thanks for the info. I got the Blu-ray you made note of and was rather disappointed by the incorrect aspect ration. a botched job just like The Hallelujah Trail. all the other Blu-ray discs I have of films shot in Ultra Panavision 70 are in the correct 2.75.1 aspect ratio.
bigjoe59: “The Fall of the Roman Empire” was released on Blu-Ray in the UK in 2.35.1 aspect ratio. Anchor Bay Entertainment/The Weinstein Company Home Entertainmet.
Hello-
to vindanpar- I am one of those fans that was rather disappointed by Kino Lorber’s recent blu-ray of The Hallelujah Trail. aside form the fact the perfect image was a bit off its was in the 2.35.2 aspect ratio not 2.75.1 since it was as you stated shot in Ultra-Panavison 70. if a blu-ray disc of The Fall of the Roman Empire ever comes out it had better be in the 2.75.1 aspect ratio.
As per CC’s new photo I wonder if The Hallelujah Trail negative still exists in the UA Archive or at least a Super Panavision print. I understand the bluray was taken from a 35mm print and is supposedly very poor and a big disappointment. One wonders why they waste such an opportunity and anger fans and lessen the possibility of a better release in the future.
Hello-
to Bill H.– its highly possible I saw the original cut. I bought my ticket when the box office first opened.
The timetable is from Jerome Agel’s 1970 book “The Making of Kubrick’s 2001”.
According to this 2001 timetable, the long version was shown at the Capitol for only three days.
The Life magazine article about the cuts is also included in the Photos section
Hello-
to Bill H.– its my understanding that the original cut of 2001 did play for a short time after opening night premiere but for how long?
Those Variety scribes sure knew how to write a socko review…
