Hopefully Rent will be a hit for the Ziegfeld. The movie is wonderful despite some negative reviews. I would have loved to have seen it at this theater.
I saw it here in NC at a new chain, Epic Theatres which is a top noche chain.(Unlike Carmike The Worst) They have 5 theaters so far and are building more in Florida. They recently purchased a small United Artist theater down the street from where they opened the areas first stadium seat theater.
There was a bunch of theaters in the Tampa area that closed within the last 5 years when AMC came in and built tons of multiplexes. I don’t know if they are still empty but here is the list that I know about.
Carmike Hillsboro 8
Carmike University Collections (Had exclusive showing of The Color Pruple in 1985)
Carmike Main Street 5
United Artists Movies At Mission Bell
AMC Varsity 6
AMC Horizon Park 4
AMC Twin Bay 4
Regal Hollywood 20. This was a stadium theater that Regal closed when it went into bankruptcy less than a year of operation.
I hear they are going condo city there. It also sucks that they are knocking down this theater. I was imminate that a diaster was coming when Frank’s Theaters purchased the chain from Hunt’s. The first year they twined the Blaker, Ocean and quaded the Strand ruining all 4 theaters. I am not sure what happened but they went out of business and were purchased by Hoyts. I know they are back in business.
This was Hunts theater for roadshow engagements. I saw The Sound of Music there. I would love to see a list of the other roadshow engagments that played here. I know Fiddler On The Roof played in 71. This theater was beautiful with 2 curtians and a beautiful curved screen
Clear Channel has pulled out of the entertainment theater business. I know they are not going to book broadway shows anymore. Wonder what will happen to the theater now?
Great pics Dave. When did they install curtains in this theater. When I lived in NYC 76-83 they never had curtains or even masking.Seemed to be a Rugoff policy. Do they use the curtains now?
Vincent
I agree. I can’t beleive that they don’t do this in NYC or LA. Ilive in Asheville, NC now so I wouldn’t expect it here. The Ziegfeld of RCMH would be the perfect place to do this.
The theater was part of the Apollo circut chain and was sold to the miserable Frank family in the late 60’s. They ran it until 1973 when they closed it in Aug when the leaser ran out. They were right in the middle of the roadshow engagement of Last Tango In Paris which they than moved to the Margate Twin. In 1974, Chalie Tannembaum took it over and reopend it as the Apollo Burlesque theater. He closed it in 1977 when the thetaer part of the building was condemed. The front became a artist gallery for charectures. It burned and the following year was replaced with a clothing store. As far as I know an Embvasy Suites now sits there on tyhe corner of New York and the boardwalk.
The Apollo had some great movies in it’s day they had The Dirty Dozen all summer of 67, Memorial day weekend they had Guess WHo’s Coming To Dinner and in June they opened with Neil Simons The Odd Couple which ran all summer. They also replaced the screen in 68.
The Margate theater was part of the Apollo circut chain which was bought out by the Frank family. It was twinned in the early 70’s. It closed sometime in the 80’s . I was told it is now an apartment complex like so many wonderful theaters in NYC.
Robert that was a great newspaper ad. It looks like the Festival was not a Walter Reade theater at that time. If you look under the ad for Marriage Italian Style it listed the Reade theaters and the Festival nor the New Torker were not part of the chain. I worked there from the late 80’s until 82 on and off for Joe Torress when they needed extra help. I think when Cineplex Odeon took over, they closed the Festival, but than when Loews merged they briefly reopened it. We had a lot of great movies there when I worked there. We ran Airplane simotaniously with the Coronet. I heard Valley Of The Dolls played there for 9 months in 1967 along with the Criterion.
THis theater closed in 74 when they moved burlesque to the Apollo on the boardwalk
Who knows what will happen after AMC gets it hands on this theater.

They are having the premiere of Rent tonight.

Inside word is that the film isn’t very good and by the looks of the preview I agree. The sets look terrible.
This is one theater that is no great loss if it doesn’t reopen. I am glad I moved from Ft Lauderdale in April.
Acording to another site, the Shore and Casino were operated as a year round theater prior to the Shore being twined.

Is the theater closed again? I can’t seem to find out what’s playing there.

Has anybody found out any information? I call moviefone and it shows no showtimes. This has me extremely concerned. It seems to be closed.
Great news. The theater has been purchased and willbe renovated as a movie theater according to today’s Citizen Times.
Howard
Do you remember seeing The Dirty Dozen? I remember it being in 1.85 ratio, but the dvd and other information shows it being in scope.

Thanks Dave
Is there any word on when the renaming will take place? Maybe they are going to make it on e hteater like the old Beekman.
Interesting Warren all three theaters are now gone. That is so sad
Wow whern I lived in NYC it was a male porno theater.
You can pull up a picture of the Tower thetaer in Upper Darby which was operated by the Ellis chain.
