Six weeks later (mid January 2008) and the hall is nearing completion of the building work. Then there is a lengthy period to commission the building, re-equip the stage, and fit out the operating box (on the site of the former projection box) and the first performances are scheduled for around 8 weeks time. This has been a particularly lavish restoration of a beautiful and historic hall.

Even allowing for the day that no-one came to a performance (see above) this extension would seem (to me) to indicate that the cinema is still viable – however marginal this may be.

This cinema was operated by Yoden Theatres who owned a small circuit in the area, including the Horden Picture House and the Super Cinema Blackhall Colliery. It appears to have closed mid 1970’s, certainly by mid 1980’s it was being used for carpet sales.

This is situated on the corner of Sunderland Road and Shotton Road. It was operated throughout its cinema life by Yoden Theatres Ltd. It appears to shown films from 1934 to 1964 judging by entries in the Kine Year Books, though these dates are not to be relied upon!

The roofline in the second photo suggests that there might have been a stage here, without a flytower.
