avatar will be on two 3d screens, one imax 3d screen, and one 35mm screen. twilight 2 is still digital.
It’s 360 seats. Subtract 20 or so, and it’s 340, not a lot of seats for a real IMAX screen, but second largest in seats next to 360 for theater #9. BTW, how are sales for Avatar this weekend? I think it’s going to be huge…i wonder how many digital 3D screens will play this movie when advance tickets go on sale for the digital 3D and 2d versions tomorrow night. So far, two screens are digitally equipped with RealD/Sony 4k. I think the Imax will sell out since those tickets were on sale earlier.
I found that comment about the “several large screens” puzzling too. Reporting misinformation is nothing new though. When are they going to stop reporting that today’s 3D is nothing like the 3D of the 50s, which used those goofy “red/blue cardboard” glasses. Those films used polarized glasses. Anaglyphic was used for comic books, some 3D re-issues in the 70s (Creature from the Black Lagoon, It Came from Outer Space, Adult, etc.) No wonder it’s taking light years to reeducate people about how far the technology has come. You may be disappointed in the IMAX system at Rockaway. It is NOT Palisades Center IMAX, but it is an improvement over RealD for a buck or two more. And the glasses are different. Again, read my Dec. 3rd post.
The last sentence of the Record article makes no sense: “Silverman said she preferred the single, huge curved screen in Rockaway over the IMAX in Nyack, which features several large screens…” it’s amazing that they let people write for newspapers that have no idea what they are talking about. The Palisades Center IMAX, like Rockaway is a single big screen – in fact a larger, real IMAX screen. I haven’t been but if IMAX Rockaway is anything like the scam AMC runs in Toronto at Younge & Dundas (ETX: Extreme Theater Experience) – I have no interest, I’ll go to a real IMAX.
Read my Dec. 3rd…also, If I recall, the IMAX is in Theater 8, whatever the capacity of that one is (320,340,360?) The theaters closest to the lobby, I believe, are the largest…then capacity gets smaller as you get farther away from the lobby. The screen certainly looked bigger. The diagram in the Daily Record article you posted pretty much explains how they did it. Again, read my Dec. 3rd entry. We MUST insure they dim those front 6 lights.
how many seats does the imax screen at rockaway hold, and is it bigger than the regular screens at the complex? i’m going to see avatar in that format in a few weeks and will have a report on the movie.

a good article about the imax can be found on the daily record website.
looks like another digital screen will be added come friday. the 3d screen will play xmas carol for three showtimes and the davidmatthewsband film for two. next week avatar will play on the two 3d screens as well as the imax digital 3d one.
How old are you Justin
No morning showtimes for Avatar Imax 3-D next week…which stinks. I guess I’ll have to see the digital 3-D version with my dad and save money and see a flat version of the movie rather than a blurry scope version of the film in 2d.
Speaking of RealD, will AMC install more digital 3-D at this building to satisfy those who can’t get tickets to the digital imax? If Avatar has to succeed then it will do really well in both 3-D and Imax 3-D. I read that Imax wants a long run for this movie, since the next major Imax movie is Alice in Wonderland, which comes out in March. Usually a new release is given a four week run, but for a 3D movie like James Cameron’s $300 million sci-fi epic, the stakes are higher.
I can’t wait to see “Avatar” in IMAX 3D. Maybe I’ll see a morning show for cheap thrills or if its sold out, go for the Real D experience.
Checked out the digital IMAX today and it was as I expected…not as impressive as the real thing but still very satisfying. The screen was moved forward (eliminating at least one row, maybe two, of seats) and seemed slightly larger. The picture was sharp and the sound system impressive. The glasses were not circular polarized as with RealD, so if you tilted your head, you’d see a double image. That would make them linear polarized. Also, they were slightly tinted (very pale red and blue) but did not compromise the movie’s colors. My only complaint, which I passed on to the attendant, was with the lighting in the auditorium. The back 6 fixtures (3 on each side) were appropriately dimmed but the front 6 fixtures were fully lit affecting the edges of the screen. Many scenes in “A Christmas Carol” were dark so this reflection from the light fixtures was very distracting. Hopefully, this will be corrected. All in all, I was satisfied but I’m also equally satisfied with the RealD system next door for the lower price of admission. Was told IMAX was doing really well. Trailers shown in 3D were: “Avatar”, “Alice” and “Dragon”.
next 3d movie to play after xmas carol is a dave matthews band concert movie, which starts next week and lasts until avatar comes out. any word on when more digital 3d installations are coming?
I checked out imdb for advance showtimes for sherlock holmes…only two UA/Regal theaters in NYC are selling them.
looks like sales are slow for this theater. No IMAX Digital showtime has been sold out…are things slowing down at this theater? Hopefully better movies will come out at this theater.
online showtimes are now back on for today. Now that the Digital Imax screen is open, will another 4k installation be on the horizon, just in time for Avatar? I hope so.
advanced showtimes are up for avatar imax 3d but not digital 3d.
all showtimes for rockaway are grayed out tonight. maybe the theater is busy?
i checked on imdb and advanced showtimes for avatar are now online, but not for rockaway.
imax showtimes are now up.
If the IMAX comes soon, then I’ll test drive it to see how it compares to big IMAX.
