about 298. I went to see avatar at 3:50 in realD 3D since the imax was sold out. Boy it was packed!!! The whole theater parking lot was packed, so me and my dad and stepmom went to another parking lot right by the food court and walked carefully to the theater. Projection wasn’t as sharp as IMAX but was satisfying and the sound was crisp and loud. A minor complaint was that during quiet scenes, a baby would cry. Other than that, this movie will stay here until Alice in Wonderland comes out. Among reald previews were Shrek 4, Piranha 3D, despicable me, and Alice.
the seating capacity for the rockaway Imax is about 290, according to the video that is to the right of the article in the daily record.
Just before seeing “A Christmas Carol” I compared #7 (RealD) and #8 (IMAX). There’s no question IMAX is bigger but I suppose you can get a similar effect by just sitting closer to the RealD screen. It’s all relative to where you sit. Quality-wise, they’re both excellent. If I were forced to choose, I’d choose IMAX (even at the higher price) but if IMAX were sold out, I wouldn’t be disappointed to settle for the RealD side. Just don’t expect the West Nyack version of IMAX. Both sound systems are more than satisfying.
on monday. It’s either 3-D or Imax 3-D. Any suggestions?
not yet but maybe next week.
Alvin beat Avatar on Wednesday but Avatar rebounded on Thursday. Keep in mind Avatar is PG-13 and probably not for smaller kids. Plus, try and get a small child to sit through 2hr. 40min. of anything. I can barely do it. Have you seen Avatar yet? I’m on schedule for sometime this week.
thanks. BTW, is Avatar still doing hotcakes? Even though there are other movie choices to see (e.g., SHerlock, Alvin, Nine, and Up in the Air), I think the real draw at this theater is still that digital IMAX theater, which is convienient to where I live.
Happy Birthday, Justin!
did they show the iron man 2 trailer? I saw it online and it looks promising.
3-D trailers: Alice, Dragon, Hubble, Shrek 4, Percy Jackson & the Olympians. In 2-D, they ran the trailer for some Tom Cruise disaster called Knight & Day.
speaking of trailers, did they show Alice, Dragon, Inception, Tron Legacy? Those are some examples of upcoming Imax 3-D movies, as well as one doc, Hubble 3D. I plan on going to see Avatar as soon as the show are not sold out. This past weekend Avatar did really well, even though Rockaway got hit hard by a snowstorm that wasn’t as bad as in the southern part of the state (where the only true IMAX is in Atlantic City).
Yes, lights went down all the way when the trailers ended.
Hey Peter, did they dim the 6 front lights near the screen? I’m hoping that during my next visit, I plan on seeing it in either 3-D or Liemax 3-D.
Saw the noon show today in IMAX ‘digital’ 3-D here (lieMAX). The presentation was pretty good, though you can still clearly see the pixels from the digital projectors if you are seated in the front half of the house. Place was packed for that show and the one coming in. The movie was OK, about a 2 out of 4. Way too long, too derivative, and too silly at times. Technically very accomplished other than a few 3-D mistakes (too much camera shake during some action scenes, for example).
Yesterday I was supposed to go see “Avatar” with my dad and stepmom for a 10:05 showing (RealD) but because of the inclement weather that was supposed to happen after the movie was over, I didn’t go. Maybe later this week I’ll see it with my Dad. I read some tweets from random people that they liked the IMAX 3D at Rockaway because of Avatar. Tickets for those showings are selling better than the RealD and 2D showings. I’m sure this movie will have legs based on word of mouth. BTW, Toy Story 3 will be in IMAX.

oh and so people agree that the IMAX3D in #8 here really is more impressive than the RealD Sony 4k they have in #7?
What about for non-3D stuff? I hear some claims that for regular stuff Sony 4K projection looks amazing (far better than the 2k stuff) and better than IMAX dual-projection (supposedly not real 4k but sort of a fake upscaled 2k of sorts???).
Just back in the hometown again after having been away for six years.
Is the palisades IMAX screen much bigger for a 1.78 movie or only for 1.33 standard IMAX stuff?
I read somewhere a claim that screen Rockaway16 screen #8 had been a 1.85 56'x30' prior to conversion (pretty solid height for a screen if not quite as wide as some). So what is it now a 1.78 64'x36??? 1.6 64'x40'??? 56'x32'??? 72'x41' :) ???
Is the palisades IMAX a 72' wide one??
I believe the SONY Lincoln in NY is 97' wide!
72' vs 64' would be noticeable but not hugely so. 72' vs 56' would be a pretty tremendous difference though…. (and of course 97 vs any of these is very, very noticeable) If the new rockaway is at least 64' wide and the palisades is a 72' one then it might not be worth the trip stuff that has no 1.33 scenes. but if rockaway is still 56' wide then it would be at times.
weird that they didn’t use circular polarization. is it the same at palisades and lincoln square?
(height is irrelevant in this discussion, as for any standardish-type aspect ratio hollywood film shown here since they are at most 1.85 and I beleive all the Rockaway 16 screens are 1.85 ratio and even if some IMAX3D are 1.78 i’m sure they have that covered just by extending up the ceiling)
Side note does anyone know where the largest screen in NJ is? Regular and IMAX. And what size? Incredibly hard to find #’s anywhere. I know CO and CA have a few 75-85' giants (non-IMAX). I believe Reading in Manville NJ claimed two 70' 2.34:1 screens (i’ve been there a few times and they did look pretty big, I guess sort of like the largest Rockaway 1.85 screens only stretched out to 2.34:1). Jersey Gardens has a few pretty decent sized screens, not sure the exact dimensions. Someone claimed the Atlantic City IMAX screen is extremely large, but nothing concrete.
Here’s the link to more info on the tech specs for Avatar…

The scope version is used for both 2d and 3d 2k versions, and the flat ratio is used for the IMAX 3D version.
i usually sit in the middle during an imax show. omnimax is more immersive. thank god amc didnt add a dome to the theater!
I might add, the 3D effect is more pronounced from the back row but you’ll feel less like you’re part of the picture. The reverse is true the closer you sit to the screen since the edges seem to disappear but with less of a 3D effect. The middle is a good compromise.
I think there will always be a percentage of people who just can’t handle 3D (especially IMAX) where there is plenty of soaring, flying, fast action scenes. I felt uneasy during certain scenes of “A Christmas Carol” when they were flying through towns. Add the rumbling sound system and it’s like being on a roller coaster. I got a headache during the IMAX version of “Polar Express”, not from the picture but from the sound system. Then again, maybe their popcorn wasn’t fresh.
Sit as far away as possible – the back row is good for the Imax-lite screens.
moviegoers who want to see avatar in 3d be warned….a small number of people who went to preview screenings of the film felt sick and nauseous after watching the whole thing. I hope I don’t get that feeling with my dad after watching it, especially in IMAX 3D.
