NOw that I think of it, wasn’t River Eats one the the theaters AMC had to sell in the purchase of Lowes? Whatever happened to all the theaters they had to liquidate? They still run the E-walk in NYC.

I was never in the theater but remember when it burned the fireman were talikng about looking up at the beautiful murials on the ceiling. The owner prior to the Franks was a gentleman named Sam Myers. He playe The Graduate there for two summers, 67 and 68. Like everything else, once the Frank’s got a hold of it they ruined it.

My first visit to the beach was in 1968 to see Yours Mine and Ours. At that time they had the old fashioned screen that the masking just came down for scope. Years later when I went back they had a new screen that the masking went down and opened horizontal for scope pictures.Tannembaum changed to porno after bookng family and Disney films for many years and having the theater torn up by kids. The theater also has boxes all along the right and left side of the balcony.

I thought from what I remember, Tess played at the Little carnegie as a reserved performance engagement. I lived in NYC and worked at the Festival on 57th and don’t remember it playing the Baronet.

The special wa great. I don’t understand why Barbra Strisand doesn’t do something too get the ball rolling on reviving the theater. She does a lot for charity and is doing another tour and this would be the perfect time for her to get involved.

I wonder if we know each other? I was in AC from 67-78 fro the summers and I remember it well. The Strand was indeed the last theater to operate on the boardwalk. The Apollo’s last season of operation was 1977.Charlie Tannenbaum was a customer of mine at Atlantic Bank and he told me they auditoium was condemmed. The front part through the lobby was used the following year, but burned. Eventually a men’s clothing store opened there. The last year of operation for the Strand was 1978. After that the front was kept and used for bike rentals. The auditorium was knocked down.

Wow that was unheard of for Atlantic City having a boardwalk theater open in the winter months.
I remember an old post card that had a picture of the Virgina and one summer they played The Carpetbaggers. Does anybody know which year this was. I don’t think The Carpetbaggers was a roadshow engagement. I also seem to remember them playing It’s A MAd MAd MAd World at the Virginia.

The theater didn’t close until 1973. TSOM did move to the Shore but I am not sure if it was Aptil 66 0r 67. It was whatever year Throughly Modern Mille played at the Virginia. I was not aware that the Virginia stayed open for the winter with TSOM. Can anybody confirm this?

Mikeoaklandpark commented about Who owns the Hillsboro 8? on May 4, 2006 at 7:45 am

Chuck
The last owner of this theater was Carmike. Why they couldn’t make a ru of it is beyond me. In the deal they got 3 theaters, Main St 5, University 6 and Hillsboro 8. The Hillsboro 8 was originally 3 scvreen theater run by Plitt. They gutted the 3 plex, knocked down the drive in behind it and reopened in the late 80’s as the Hillsboro 8. It was a beautiful theater when they opened. I rememebr one of th eopening films was Hairspray. They also were equiped to show 70mm which they did with Dick Tracy and Far And Away.
Which bankruptcy was this?

I was not aware that Those Magnificent Men played at the Trans LUx as a roadshow engagement. I remember it being there, but not that it was roadshow. If I remember back 41 years the Arcadis next door had Woody Allen’s What’s New Pussycat.

The Surf is on Collins about 73rd. The Collins Ave theater is part of the Deauville hotel on 67th and Collins. It was created for showcase singers. There opening show many years ago was Vicki Carr. The theater didn’t last very long. It is still part of the hotel and is used during conventions for meetings and other things. The Surf still has the original screen where they do show movies from time to time while memebrs work out.
