As usual, Avatar 3D/Imax/35mm is held over this weekend. The crowds, which were dead this week because of the workweek, will return in droves to see it again and again until the next major 3D movie arrives.
which screens?
not sure how many more Sony 4k but can’t be more than 2…. this is just you have to wait and see
check this video about Digital IMAX system… pretty interesting

I have seen red band trailers at several different movie theaters. I am pretty sure that I saw at least one at an AMC theater right before Watchmen.

just came back from seeing sherlock in screen #15, and while it was a great movie with a well behaved crowd, there were some minor issues…the projection was very blurry (although the sound was great), and there were some splices throughout the movie. At least they brought back showing those green bands before the trailers…has amc ever shown a red band trailer at this theater? I would love to see them show red band trailers since Regal brought them back.
today i’m going to see sherlock holmes in plain old 35mm. hopefully it won’t be as busy as last week.
What AMC lacks is Bollywood and foriegn films. The last foriegn film that I saw in this theater was a cult hit, and once in awhile an indie or a foreign film comes out for a few weeks, only to be replaced by the latest blockbuster/romantic comedy/cartoon. I can’t wait for the day when AMC starts showing real sporting events at this theater, especially those that are in 3D. btw, how does this theater compare with the busiest theater in america, the empire?

i hope obama enjoyed the movie.
Yes, thank you. Between MarketSaw’s news of “things to come” and Box Office Mojo’s current and historical summary, we have a complete picture of the growing success of 3D movies. They need to add “A Christmas Carol” which would come in at No. 5 with just over $136M. The fallout of Avatar’s success is that theaters, like Rockaway, have had to resort to a 2D showing of “A Christmas Carol” but that will be corrected in time. I just read that the First Family had attended a private showing of Avatar this morning.
Check out this link for 3D box office movies…http://boxofficemojo.com/genres/chart/?id=3d.htm
3D is for real. They also have 3D videogames (avatar for ps3 has a 3d mode), and 3D stuff for pcs. who knows? Maybe we’ll see 4D or 5D for that matter!!!
Absolutely! I hesitate to quote numbers of screens because it is constantly changing. I do recall, however, that when “Chicken Little” was out in 2005 (the beginning of the digital 3D era) there were only two screens in NJ (Edgewater and Elizabeth). Now, according to RealD’s current list, there are 39 (this doesn’t include AMC Essex Green) so I suspect it’s already out of date. 3D=$$$, so you can expect the numbers to grow rapidly. Also, we’ll see brand new 3D HDTVs (required), Blu-ray DVD players and a 3D HDTV channel from Direct TV in 2010 (gotta get Cablevision on board). The naysayers who are predicting this resurgence as yet another short-lived gimmick are not paying attention.
Avatar has changed the way people see 3D movies, with a great storyline and nice special effects. 2010 will have more 3D films as well as IMAX 3D and 2D versions of blockbuster films. Will more screens get digital next year, JJD? 2012 is when all AMC theaters get digital screens.
Sounds great. I also plan on seeing it in both versions just to compare the overall effect. I’d be curious to know if either larry 2 or movie534 has seen Avatar and what they thought since they were so negative on digital 3D. Chime in guys. Do you, at least, feel differently about 3D’s future this time around and what it brings to the experience (especially since Avatar) even if you personally don’t like it?
it was good. Lots of great special effects, and a good storyline. I won’t spoil anything for you so you have to sit through the whole movie to get the gist of it. I actually went to the reald showing and the projection was very sharp. Hopefully when the crowd dies down I’ll see it in IMAX 3-D.
Bald with a moustache. Things came up and I still haven’t made it over to the theater. I am currently planning on Monday for the 10am IMAX showing so I guess I better get there early. Perhaps we will run into each other someday. BTW, you haven’t said anything about the movie itself. What did you think?
Hey JJD, I didn’t see you at the theater. What color hair are you? Also, I see that IMAX showtimes quickly sell out, followed by the digital 3D showtimes but not the 2D showings.
also the small-class screens above are still larger to ridiculously larger than the avg little multiplex screen so they are only small compared to real IMAX screens or monster-class regular screens, until maybe 10-15 years ago even this size had been all but gone from NJ (after they killed the old Stanley Warner and all the old palaces during the 80’s)
note on the above lists they are regualr screens and not IMAX of any form unless stated
also I think the Zeigfeld in NYC is something like 58'x32'???
the Lincoln Square non-IMAX is claimed to be 50-65'x?‘
downtown NYC they got rid of the premiering screen said to have been 65'x’? or so
I found out some info on screen sizes, but still nothing on the AMC Rockaway IMAX size nor the Jersey Gardens IMAX:
where do the AMC digIMAX Rockaway, NJ and Jersey Gardens digIMAX Elizabeth, NJ fit?? really want to know what size they are! If the Rockaway digIMAX really does look larger than the Rockaway RealD screen then maybe it and the Jersey Gardens could make it into the intermediate catergory?? the large (seems hard to believe)??????
giant screens:
AMC Lincoln Square IMAX NY, NY – 97.6'x75.6'
New Roc IMAX New Rochelle, NY – 81.5'x59.5'
Palisades IMAX Nyack, NY – 74'x53.8'
Tropicana IMAX Atlantic City, NJ – 69.8'x52.5'
digIMAX Reading, PA – 70'x42'
Reading’s two giant screens Manville, NJ – 70'x30'???(are they for sure?)
intermediate size (by modern IMAX standards):
Museum of Natural History IMAX NY, NY – 66'x40'
smaller non-giant screens (at least by modern day IMAX standards):
AMC digIMAX Hamilton, NJ – 58'x32'
AMC RealD Rockaway, NJ – 57'x30.5'
AMC digIMAX Cherry Hill, NJ – 54'x28'
As above with some other theaters from across the country tossed in (not remotely complete, there are quite a few other 70'+ IMAX and non-IMAX screens scattered around out there, although few to none other in the NJ area):

comments
AMC Rockaway RealD (assuming it was left same dimensions as prior to RealD conversion) is about as big as most non-trueIMAX get for 1.85:1 movie projection but considerably smaller than the largest 2.35:1 screens or the largest digitalIMAX screens or the larger IMAX screens
Reading Manville two mega theaters – claimed to be 70'x30' by someone working there (they are huge not sure if they are really quite that big, not verified)
AMC Lincoln Square IMAX biggest non-drive in screen in western hemisphere???
New England Aquarium Boston IMAX one of the largest screens out there, went there once, very impressive
