I HOPE SOMEONE CAN TAKE PHOTOS INSIDE AND OUT BEFORE THE THEATER CLOSES!
Anyone have more info or old photos?
Early 1930’s opened by Finkelstein Theaters?
Late 1930’s taken over by Pioneer Theater?
Late 1960’s sold?
Early 1979’s taken over by Fridley Theaters?
Early 1980’s expanded to 3 screens?
I THINK the theater was expanded into the former Walgreen Drug Store right next door. The entrance to the theater is in a sorta “modern” building which could be the drug store. If you click on the map, go to the satellite and go to the street photo, you see 2 older buildings on either side of the entrance either one (especially the one to the right) could be a theater. That’s the best I can do from Manteno Illinois, can you add anything?
I wonder if President Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter ever went to this drive-in. They were born and raised and will be buried in front of his home in the tiny hamlet of Plains, Georgia about 10 miles west of the this larger town of Americus.
Off topic, but- forgive this U.S. Navy Chief, Lieutenant Carter “loved the Navy” (I know the feeling), was in the fledging nuclear submarine program, is the only U.S. President to qualify in submarines, and has a submarine named after him, the USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23). http://navysite.de/ssn/ssn23.htm
On this site, in 1853 the First Presbyterian Church was built. In 1906 it was remodeled into the Family Theater. This was one of the first theaters in Indiana to show moving pictures. It used a Viatscope Machine. In 1935 the theater was torn down to make way for the Lafayette Theater. The rear of the stage house wall that was built in 1906 was preserved and remains to this date in the Lafayette Theater.
HOPE SOMEONE CAN TAKE SOME PHOTOS BOTH INSIDE AND OUT BEFORE IT CLOSES!
