btw, tickets for this music show are at $15, which is a bargain for concert fans but is right up there with the met in HD tickets, which they should show in sony 4k rather than the preshow projectors. The preshow should be in 4k rather than the old projection as was the case with watching avatar in 3d.

Starting this weekend, Avatar will be in 2D as well as 3D on one screen, while it still runs in liemax. Any word on what the second digital screen will show? Probably not being used until they show the Celine Dion doc every night starting next week, and when that’s done, they’ll start showing avatar in 3d again.

a major snowstorm is coming to this theater with amount of snow to not reach the top of the building…btw, I think Avatar will still play in 3D on two screens and on the liemax screen until Alice in Wonderland comes out. March will be a busy month for 3D movies, and hopefully Rockaway will have enough 3D screens to play those movies.

Looks like Dear John will dethrone Avatar from the box office this weekend…it’s playing on several screens. Next up, The Wolfman, which will dominate the box office for a few weeks until Alice In Wonderland comes out.

Looks like I was wrong. Not much snow around here, but areas near the Neshaminy, Hamilton, and other theaters in South Jersey are getting hammered with the white stuff!!! Looks like the weatherman was wrong. On with the show!!!

A major snowstorm and a highly anticipated Super Bowl will keep people at home from attending the movies at this theater. Same thing happened when Avatar was first released there was a major snowstorm that kept some people home and one day the theater had to close early before the snow piled up near the theater. At least the theater is bigger than the snow!!! BTW, there will be more 3D movies this year than last year, and with the increased demand, more 3D screens need to be added. Slimshady, what’s the latest on the digital projection situation? Only one month left until Alice in Wonderland comes out in IMAX.

Checking advance showtimes, on Febuary 17, one of the digital projectors will show “Celine Dion: Through the Eyes of the World”, a concert doc, for 8 days and showtimes only. It should sell well to the older demographic who likes her music.

I just put out a poll allowing CT users to vote which movie will win Best Picture. I hope Avatar wins all 9 nominations, which is tied with The Hurt Locker for the lead at the oscars. Good thing Avatar didn’t get acting nominations since most of that stuff is CGI.

Until now, since everyone is renting that movie from Netflix like crazy. The Hurt Locker was at this theater and quickly exited the theater during the busy summer of 2009.

I’ve been waking up in a cold sweat from this nightmare that “Avatar” will lose Best Picture to some plotless film by an ex-wife about diffusing bombs that most people have never heard of (much less seen). Hope I’m wrong.

looks like avatar will be number one again. It will pass titanic for the most money made by a movie in america and has already grossed the most money for a movie around the world, becoming the first $2 billion hit. Who knows, if this movie gets Best Picture as well as other accolades, it might gross even more. By the time the Oscars are shown on live TV, Avatar will still play in 3D but not in IMAX 3D due to Alice in Wonderland being shown.

I also heard that clash of the titans will be in 3d, the remake. Warner Bros tested footage of the film and looked promising. I’ve seen bits and pieces of the film on tv (the original), so seeing it in 3D will be a big improvement on the original classic, which opened at the old Rockaway theater back in 1981 against Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Advance tickets are now up for three big movies coming out in two weeks…Wolfman, Valentine’s Day, and Percy Jackson. I plan on seeing Wolfman whether or not it’s digital 4k or not.

one thing to keep in mind is that the digital imax projectors can’t support more than 70'x35' or so screen width so that wouldn’t work too well at Lincoln Square yet 97' wide screen and digital IMAX is much, much, much lower res than what they can get out of something shot and projected as real IMAX film so all taht stuff would look worse (then again for 3D stuff it seems like they are only filling the screen to maybe 66' width or so anyway, but maybe that is just palisades, lincoln square must have stronger bulbs to begin with and perhaps they can fill say 80' or even the full 97' width or maybe they can afford to replace the reels and aren’t as worried abotu fading out the image for a long run?? I was thinking of giving lincoln square a try but it wont be projected another larger than at palisades that would be a major waste of time). Anyway I don’t think they will replace the projectors at the real imax theaters until 8K 2D, 4k 3D projectors with 100'x70' support arrive which I bet would be another five years certainly.

@JJD – i may give palisades another try when I pass by again and then I can give it a better comparison, saw it at Rockaway again, with a better seat this time but now my exact memory of palisades is fading, my vague impression is that the palisades prentation was a dimmer and had a bit more motion blur but, despite the failing to utlilize a lot of the screen, it was still a bigger image and the 3D effect seemed even stronger and something overal seemed more impressive

This is great news. I’d like to see “avatar” gross $2 billion worldwide (which it will in a few weeks) and become a huge hit on DVD and Bluray ( a 3D version might come out soon). I think they’re still using film at palisades (so is Lincoln Square). Last time i visited both theaters they still used the old IMAX system. Even the dome at LSC and the NatureMax theater still use film. It won’t be long before IMAX starts replacing those bulky film reels and heavy projectors with the simpler digital projectors. This is cost-effective for IMAX, since their stock has rebounded from all time lows and is climbing.

Thanks, Ski, for the heads up on Palisades. I was planning on seeing Avatar (for the fourth time) on that screen but am now having second thoughts. I’m not sure it’s worth the trip or extra $6. Also, are they still using film? If so, how sharp was it compared to Rockaway’s digital IMAX?

Today’s news that Avatar is now the highest grossing movie ever (excluding inflation, actual ticket sales, blah, blah, blah), is not only a win for the movie and director, but also a win for 3D. Who would have thought this distinction would have gone to a “3D movie?” And to those who have already started criticizing 3DTV as “unnecessary” or “too soon”, guess we should have held off on color until we perfected black and white, or held off on 3DTV because a bunch of people just bought HDTV sets. No one is forcing anyone to see anything in 3D, but stop complaining and allow those who want to see these movies or own these sets the option.

If you’re on facebook ski, fan the AMC Theatres page and ask them that question. They will reply as fast as possible. I’ve been asking AMC Theatres on facebook about all sorts of stuff regarding movies at the theater rather than on CT. I even asked a friend of mine who works there to fan the page, and he did.

i’m curious did they notice if the showing at lincoln square used the full width of the screen? at palisades they did some pretty extensive side boxing so the actual projected image was only modestly larger than at Rockaway instead of considerably so.

also curious since you say you know someone who works at the rockaway theater, can he find out the exact screen dimensions of the imax there?

I’m planning on visiting this theater with my aunt after the first weekend of February, upon which Avatar will become the highest grossing but not highest selling movie of all time, that of course, has to go to Gone With the Wind, back when movie ticket prices were not expensive and screens were just one screen each. It is, however, the highest grossing 3D/Imax 3D movie of all time, and will have some re-issues in the future once the oscars are handed to James Cameron and his crew.

some people whom my dad works with at school tried the new imax at this theater and they didn’t like it as much as a real imax theater (i.e., lincoln square or palisades).
