I agree. If Avatar wins any Oscars come Sunday night (Which I’ll miss because ABC might not be on Cablevision), especially Best Picture, then it will be the first time ever a major 3D movie has won the big kahuna. As for that other big movie that would win it, it’s playing at several Clearviews. This coming Saturday AMC is showing that movie alongside the last four nominated films as part of its Oscar festival. If The Hurt Locker wins, then James Cameron will be ticked off. ONe other interesting tidbit, his current wife, Suzy Amis, was in Cameron’s last big movie, Titanic, as the daughter of Gloria Stuart’s character, Rose.
Not to sound too greedy, but two RealD screens are not enough to keep up with this year’s 3D offerings. AVATAR is back UP to the No. 2 spot (a recurring pattern once the initial interest in a given week’s new releases begins to diminish). And yet it has been reduced to one screen starting tomorrow in order to accomodate ALICE on the other RealD screen…similar dilemma with IMAX (AVATAR’S finale tomorrow). But hey, all things in time. I know this stuff is expensive and, to be honest, Rockaway has come a long way since the dark days of endless anticipation that we would ever see 3D capability.
looks like it’s correct, according to movietickets.com. Must be the first time that Rockaway is showing two 3d movies in reald and one in Imax 3d.
looks like there’s a midnight showing for alice in 2d, 3d, and imax 3d. Wonder if Avatar will still be playing on one 3d screen?

I haven’t heard anything lately, nor have I asked anyone at the theater. SlimShady appears to be the supreme source for that kind of inside info, so I depend on him. I will say I hope it’s soon since we are entering the “competitive” phase of 3D movies and lack of screens will only hurt potential revenue for a particular movie (and for theaters since these movies will have to play on more 2D screens). Could we also see another IMAX screen at Rockaway someday since a lot of these movies play on that screen as well as RealD and IMAX appears to be the preferred choice for moviegoers. I’m sure AVATAR would have continued to do well in IMAX had it not been bumped by ALICE.
JJD, any word on when more projectors will be available for future 3D movies like Alice, and Dragon?
FYI, the new Tron Legacy trailer that was screened today at select IMAX 3D theaters will be attached to Alice In Wonderland. I can’t wait for that. The first Tron was a masterpiece, and was ahead of its time with its use of computer animation in a live-action world. The trailer will also be shown in Disney Digital 3D as well.
last chance to see avatar in liemax 3d this weekend before alice in wonderland takes over next weekend. So far, the midnight showings at AMC’s IMAX showings are not selling as well as Avatar, which changed the way people watched 3D movies again forever. Too bad Iron Man 2 and Inception are not in 3D but in blown-up IMAX. Wonder how that would look on that semi-big screen….I plan on seeing Alice In Wonderland in IMAX or digital 3D if the IMAX sells out. As for sporting events being shown at theaters, I heard that a UFC game will be shown next month at select theatres, and provide a cheap alternative for those who don’t want to pay for tv.
this is going to be interesting…btw, the theater is having a delayed opening due to the snowstorm; yesterday it closed early due to the bad weather.

Showtimes are up for Alice in Wonderland in Imax 3D but not in digital 3D. The midnight shows are sold out. Unlike Avatar, Alice will have a limited run. And Slimshady, the story about amc not showing alice is fake. Hopefully Rockaway adds more 3d screens between the release of Alice in Wonderland and Clash of the Titans and beyond.
i think they just put the Celine dion showtime in the middle of an Avatar 3D run on that one screen, which means that the projector had to switch to 2D 4k and then return to 3D for the rest of the showtimes.
Did Rockaway add a third digital screen? Based on the showtimes, Avatar is still on two RealD screens (and IMAX of course) and Celine Dion is on a third digital screen at 2:00pm.
btw, some showtimes are greyed out on the theater’s pages….alice in wonderland is going to play in imax and reald 3d. what the heck is goin on?
uh-oh…maybe I’ll go to a clearview in parsippany or succasunna!!! This isn’t the first time that a major theater chain has refused to show movies in its entire circuit. Back in 1999, most of Loews Cineplex’s theaters in Manhattan refused to carry “Star Wars: Phantom Menace”, then two years later, all Regal theaters refused to carry “Rush Hour 2”. As for my moviegoing experience at amc, i just came back from watching “Valentine’s Day” this past sunday while it was crowded, mostly for Shutter Island since it was sold out. I waited a few mintues to get a box of chocolate raisins and a large Coke Zero. It was a good deal. Projection was so-so and there were splices.

advance tickets are not available yet for alice in wonderland, which opens in two weeks. Hopefully by next week AMC will post advanced showtimes for the movie.
i am going on respite after all next week.
bad news, respite was cancelled, so I’ll be seeing shutter island with my dad tomorrow night in 35mm at rockaway. This will be the third Scorsese movie that will play at this theater, following The Departed after its Oscar run and Shine a Light. Bringing Out the Dead last played at the old AMC in Rockaway.
Seeing pixels on screen during a movie is like watching scratches on a bad IMAX print as was the case with my second showing of L5 at Lincoln Square. Sound was still working and 3D was good, but there was some splices and scratches (which were small and tiny on a large screen). This also is true for older IMAX movies like To Fly and Omnimax movies where the screen envelopes the moviegoer.
What good is the digital IMAX when you can still clearly see the pixels on screen as you can at the AMC Rockaway?
Seems that Clearview is responding to the digital revolution by installing more projectors in its other theaters, including older ones. That means no more sharp prints of movies as well as good old lossy digital sound that will be quieter with the pcm audio. Too bad they don’t have the money to afford an Imax installation, which AMC, Regal, and Cinemark have.
