Today my roomate Linden came back from seeing Alice in IMAX and although he liked the movie, wasn’t that impressed with the liemax as much as real IMAX. Wonder how long the AMC-IMAX deal will last if people start to complain of the size of the imax…
I agree with you, tlsloews. Nothing can beat a scrachy film print and a good old Dolby SR soundtrack over a 3D/4k/2k movie with uncompressed or lossy surround sound with too many channels. Movies have come a long way since the late 19th century and the digital revolution has just rapidly begun. When the AMC in Rockaway opened in 2006, 3D was just a fad and IMAX was only to be found in big cities. Flash forward nearly four years later, and we not only have two digital 3d projectors, but a digital IMAX theater, not to mention preshow projectors that also show operas, concerts, educational stuff, and an upcoming UFC fight, which will do well.

btw, I heard that Toy Story 3 will be the first film to be shown in Dolby Surround 7.1 in select theaters…will rockaway be one of them?
I’m not going to this theater due to personal reasons. Maybe next weekend or when all the screens get digital I’ll see a good movie. Can’t wait for Iron Man 2 in giant fake Imax…lol.
Don’t forget that the Prince of Persia movie will be in IMAX as well.
BTW, the third Alvin movie will be in 3D late next year. I don’t care for watching singing chipmunks flying nuts at me!!!
showtimes are back to normal. Avatar 3D is held over this weekend. Looks like Green Zone will be a blurry 35mm presentation. What’s the latest on digital projection, Slimshady?

I’ve been reading a lot of comments about how the faked up 2D->3D 3D for Alice looks a let less real than the real 3D-filmed 3D of Avatar. Is that the consesus for those who have seen both at the same screen at Rockaway?
I’m surprised (and flattered) that you remembered that, Justin. Frankly, I’m not surprised that THE HURT LOCKER won since the buzz lately was that it would probably pull it off. To me, AVATAR was still the big winner according to “the people” who spent over 2.5 billion at the box office and voted for it in these online polls. And how many records did any of these other movies break? At least it took Best Picture at the Golden Globes. Between AVATAR and UP, it was a great night for 3D too. Looks like ALICE will continue that momentum.

Not only did Alice In Wonderland break the record for a digital 3D movie, but it also broke the record for IMAX showings this weekend.
Last night, Alice in Wonderland made box office history, making $41 million on opening day. This is mostly attributed to the 3d and IMAX showings making the bulk of the gross…it’s also the widest 3D release ever for both formats. How Alice does after a $100 million+ opening for a 3D film will be decided in the weeks ahead, when a flood of 3D and IMAX 3D films descend upon Rockaway, thus creating a demand for more projectors to show 3D stuff. Slimshady, what’s the status on more shipments of 3d projectors?
For Tomorrow, Up is not playing in 3D as part of the Best Picture showcase due to Avatar and Alice In Wonderland being in Reald 3D.
looks like alice is selling well at this theater, both in imax and 3d. I’m waiting until the dvd release date since there’s too many 3d films playing this year. THe only ones I want to see is Harry Potter, that dragon movie, Shrek 4, and Hubble 3D. Next IMAX movie I’d like to check out is Iron Man 2 and Inception, not to mention Tron Legacy. Was the trailer shown before Alice in 3D and IMAX 3D? I’m waiting until it’s online to see it. The next movie I’m seeing next Friday is Green Zone, starring Matt Damon. It should be worth seeing on the big screen with the booming sound and big picture. Hope it’s still 35mm.
sounds no different than digital imax, they just bump the screen up a touch closer and make it a touch larger, not like they are all gonna be giant movie palace screens
20% is relative, if they start with a theater that tops out at 40' screens it will still be smaller than many regular screens
btw, will amc put in an etx screen? That’s the new gimmick that AMC is using on several screens in america, including one at walt disney world in fla.
thank you jjd. As of right now, the midnight showing of Alice in IMAX 3D and the 8:45 showing of that movie have sold out. This on a weekend where the temps will be rising and be more like a spring weekend, even though it’s still winter. According to my friend Paul, on Fridays it’s decent, but on Saturdays it’s busy, with Sunday being a mall shopping day with half of the shoppers going to the mall and half of them going to the movies. I hope Rockaway gets to show that Ghost Writer movie once the Oscar hoopla is done and over with…it has done pretty good in limited release (the Clairidge in Montclair is showing it).

YIKES! I’m aware of the ABC/Cablevision impasse but wasn’t aware that ABC could go dark Saturday night. BTW, to my knowledge, NO 3D movie (major or otherwise) has ever won an Oscar. 3D was never taken seriously until IMAX was born and now RealD, as well as the more mature approach being taken to how it’s used. I just read an interview with Cameron and he not only seemed pretty cool about the possibility of losing Best Picture since sci-fi seldom wins that category, but also acknowledged that women directors (Bigelow?) deserve a lot more recognition than they’ve been getting. Regarding AVATAR, could we conclude that people are seeing it over and over until they’re BLUE in the face?
