A lot of great blockbusters played at the Parkview Theatre. “STAR WARS” played here first-run in 1977,and was one of the many films that was re-released too in 1978.

“RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK” played here at the Parkview Twin first-run in 1981.

The Parkview became a twin cinema in June of 1975 for it’s opening attraction of “Jaws”. Also listed as the Parkview 1 and Parkview 2.

To Ret. AKC(NAC)CC Bob Jensen: I have done extensive research on this theatre and this information on the Parkway has been updated as of 3/20/2012.

The Parkway Theatre upon it’s opening was Winston-Salem’s first ever suburban theatre, and it was a first-run alternative to the Downtown moviehouses when it opened on September 1,1965. I have the original ads for its grand opening. The opening attraction on September 1,1965 was a Rock Hudson flick starring Leslie Caron “A Very Special Favor”. It was owned and operated until Schneider-Merl Theatres.

Correction: The Capri Triple Theatres opened to the public on November 21,1979 as High Point’s first-ever triplex cinema. This theatre did not open in 1976,but it opened in 1979. I have the ads from its grand opening that were in the 11/21/1979 edition of the High Point Enterprise. The information concerning this cinema will be updated. It closed around 1999 or 2000.

I will have this reposted. The Quaker Village was Greensboro’s second twin cinema after the opening the Janus in 1968.

The Charlottetown Mall Cinemas was also known as the CINEMA I & II. The theatre originally opened on November 6, 1963 with Debbie Reynolds in “Mary,Mary” that played on two screens. I have the original ads from it’s Grand Opening from the Charlotte Observer newspaper as the 1st twin theatres to be established in North Carolina.

Patricia Carol: It must have been crazy dealing with the capacity crowds when “E.T.” played there in June of 1982. I know the ushers were really working their behinds off between showings, not to mention dealing with the capacity crowds that arrived early for that too. By the way Patricia e-mail me sometime at I have in my possession the original ads for “E.T.” where it played at the Capri first-run in 1982. Also, the original ad from January 28,1965 where the Capri played “My Fair Lady” during it’s exclusive roadshow run. Not to mention,I have the ad for the theatre’s grand opening from the Charlotte Observer newspaper of November 2,1964.

SHOWGIRLS played here at this drive-in theatre in early 1996. It was the only theatre that show it due to its controversial and graphically sexual content due to its “NC-17” rating.

raysson commented about Janus Theatres on Feb 27, 2012 at 10:30 am

I saw SHOWGIRLS where it played in the Raleigh-Durham area when it was released in 1995 at the Imperial VI Cinemas in Cary. SHOWGIRLS only played in selected theatres upon it’s release. But SHOWGIRLS wasn’t the first movie to have a controversial following in the Carolinas, especially in the greater Greensboro area.

The Janus also was the ONLY theatre in the greater Triad area in 1990 to show the controversial and explicit frank and sexually graphic film HENRY AND JUNE that was in the first movie to be released with the MPAA’s new “NC-17” rating(originally “X”). It was one of four cinemas in North Carolina that show it during its theatrical release. The others were in Charlotte, Asheville, and Raleigh.

tccox and patriciacarol: Interesting! I do recall the Junior Johnson Story having its world premiere for one of the ads that I saw in the Charlotte Observer, somewhere during the mid-1970’s. Having the honor and the pleasure of meeting two big Hollywood stars…Jeff Bridges and Valerie Perrine and joining them for lunch across the street from the theatre! That’s a day worth remembering! I’m from the Raleigh-Durham area, and I was born in the Charlotte area, and I do recall vivid memories of the Capri Theatre. Not to mention The Ramada Inn across Independence Boulevard and at one time The Peddler Steakhouse, which was Charlotte’s top-rated restaurant that was next door to the cinema! All along that stretch of Independence Boulevard! E-mail:

ALL of the Sean Connery 007-Bond films played here: From “Doctor No” to “Diamonds Are Forever”. Not to mention “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.

Since the Carolina was basically getting most of the United Artists product in the greater Fayetteville area during that time. “West Side Story” played here in 1962. ALL The BEATLES films that played here at the Carolina were HUGE hits ranging from “A Hard Day’s Night”, to “HELP!”, “Yellow Submarine”, and “Let It Be”.

The Cardinal Theatre upon its official grand opening in 1971 got a lot of the MGM product of re-release classics. These films were presented in 70MM and it was the first in Eastern North Carolina and the Greater Fayetteville area. These movies were presented as the MGM four-pack of re-release classics that were a first in the Fayetteville area. Movies ranging from “Gone With The Wind”, to “Ben-Hur”,“Doctor Zhivago”,and “2001: A Space Odyssey” all presented in 70MM and 6 Track Stereophonic Sound as a Eastern North Carolina Exclusive Engagement Showing at the Cardinal Theatre in 1971.
