and for the record the stadium seating auditoriums are not 7 and 8, but 1 and 4

For this year’s Oscar Nominated (Live Action/Animation) Showcase, they moved it from auditorium #1 to #3. For once it’s properly framed, since the DP system was off to the side and created a slight off centre image on auditorium #1 (oddly this wasn’t a problem when they presented ‘Bubble’). While the screen is not as large as #1, the image is still great. I know that movies tend to rotate alot from screen to screen at E Street, but it would be great to see an actual full length movie in digital projection (for awhile E. Street was getting some pretty shoddy looking 35mm prints. ‘There Will Be Blood’ was a disaster, in that one of the reel changes was flipped upside down AND going backwards) ‘Che’ would have been ideal to see since it was actually shot with 4K cameras.

I have to say even though the theatres are nice, the clientele aren’t. The last movie I saw there; 2005’s ‘Exorcism of Emily Rose’ was my last, to say the teenagers were extremely rude and disruptive is an understatement – a near melee almost ensued when several audience members got sick and tired of some kids that wouldn’t shut up, expletives were said and it got somewhat ugly.

and in terms of ‘Best Sound’ the Academy overlooked two of the best mixes I heard/experienced in the theatre: ‘Incredible Hulk’ and ‘Prince Caspian’ Personally I thought ‘Benjamin Button’ was pretty mediocre, not Fincher’s best by a long shot.

oh, now I know why AMC/Regal promised mass conversion to digital projection came to a screeching halt. As far as AMC is concerned they are more interested in converting screens to mini-IMAX specs than with standard DLP, let alone REAL-D (3D).

what’s a tad hypocritical is that originally Nolan refused Warners to release it to the IMAX-Digital screens, well… this time around Warner’s booked said screens.

according to an email I received from National Amusements, they are not remodeling nor are there plans on reopening the Lee Highway Multiplex – oh well.

‘Boeing Boeing’ was a blast, I saw it with Bradley Whitford and he was hysterical – heard the Jerry Lewis film version of the play is vastly inferior.

response to this posting:

“A movie theater operator friend tells me 2 k shouldn’t be used on movie screens larger than 40 feet wide.

Perhaps it would have looked better with a 4k projector?

NEC’s systems (which are installed at the Arclight Dome) are meant for screens 40 feet and wider according to the online literature I’ve seen regarding the system.

the odd thing about pricing though, was that for the preview run, there weren’t any reduced priced tix (I payed full price), though for it’s Broadway run, my friend saw quite a few reduced prices from online tickets outlets.

on topic regarding ‘West Side Story’ (I’m surprised east coast dates of the 70mm print screening haven’t been announced, yet… NYC or DC [AFI Silver]) I saw ‘West Side Story’ at the National (DC) and I generally liked it, the dancing and singing were top notch, and the casting of Anita and Maria were great, the role of Tony though was the one thorn in it’s side, he was so bland.

I just read somewhere that only two people can eat at Ben’s for free, Obama and Bill Cosby… just thought I’d pass that interesting tidbit along.

from what I can tell from the website, it’s a one time showing of the non-3D version but with a Q&A with the director and writer.

and if IMAX were seriousily in the cards, Merrifield could actually add on and/or build up an IMAX to two to three story dimensions, something the other IMAX-Digital auditoriums are lacking {i.e, height).

Giles
Giles commented about Lee Highway Multiplex Cinemas on Jan 17, 2009 at 11:15 pm

but the planned IMAX screen over Tyson’s is currently stalled, if National Amusement’s did a complete revamp stadium seating, all digital DLP, non-digital IMAX they’d steal AMC thunder by a huge margine.

Giles
Giles commented about AMC to build 100 digital IMAX screens on Jan 17, 2009 at 12:39 pm

of the theatres in the DC area, it appears the IMAX systems can also be used to playback standard DLP movies. With ‘The Day The Earth Stood Still’ underperforming, those screens are definately adding non-IMAX features to said screen.

Giles commented about Regal Gallery Place Stadium 14 on Jan 17, 2009 at 12:29 pm

I just noted this when I saw ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’ yesterday, but the ceiling lights in their sole DLP auditorium never go fully out, they remain on (faint, but still there – they also create a glare on the glasses themselves). To say the least they are very distracting when an essentially dark film (and in 3D) can, and should be the only visual source. I kind of subtly complained and asked if the lights could be manually turned all the way off, the answer was no. I shot a complaint to corporate over this, since I wasn’t too pleased with how management handled the situation.

I’m really looking forward to the David Fincher showcase and seeing “Moulin Rouge!” on the big screen again

(psst… I bring in Panera stuff in all the time.) I do like the beer the Silver has on tap. Their popcorn though is waaay oversalted. Compared to Landmark’s popcorn their corn is vastly inferior.

Giles commented about 70mm "West Side Story" in Chicago on Dec 30, 2008 at 12:54 pm

‘West Side Story’ is currently in play form is having it’s pre-Broadway run here in Washington DC before moving on to New York City. I hope to see it since it’s been getting decent reviews.

as for the rollout of the film’s is becoming apparent it’s making the rounds, San Francisco, LA, Chicago … it’s the East Coast theatres I’m interested in knowing where it’s going to get booked.

Giles commented about 70mm "West Side Story" in Chicago on Dec 30, 2008 at 10:28 am

oh, no denying ‘West Side Story’ on the big screen is the definite place to see and experience this film, but as film preservation, who ever did the film transfer should be commended. I’ve already sent my email to the Silver Theatre, after the 70mm Castro theatre’s website advertised it’s engagement, now it’s just a waiting game to see if (or when) the AFI Silver can showcase ‘West Side Story’ on the big screen (it’s like twisting arms to request films). The last time I saw the film in 70mm was at the Uptown theatre when they did a mini 70mm film festival, the other highlight was “Alien” (wow! that was out of this world) – but I’m digressing.

slightly off the topic of the Chicago “theatrical engagement” – HDNet Movie’s airing of WSS in hidef is absolutely gorgeous, another spectacular 65mm to video transfer that I can’t wait to own on bluray. I hope some East Coast dates of WSS are in the cards (ahem, AFI Silver)

Giles commented about AMC to build 100 digital IMAX screens on Dec 29, 2008 at 10:21 am

and yet the promised IMAX screen at Tyson’s Corner has still not been finalized :( what the !@#$ AMC?
And even the few AMC theatres here in Washington that can’t be outfitted to “mini” IMAX specs, you’d think AMC could pony up the cash and outfit more auditoriums with Sony’s 4K LCoS digital systems or even standard 2K 3D units. Mazza Galleria SHOULD at this point have a 3D system, but it doesn’t – with the slew of 3D movies slated this year (that aren’t being DMR’d for IMAX presentation), AMC’s rollout and installation of standard DLP units to theatres is simply pathetic.

[runs over to the Ridgewood Theater listing]

I assume ‘Che’ will be digitally projected at the Ziegfeld.

are the Harry Potter films digital or 35mm. I saw the first two films at the AFI Silver last year, and while they were in 35mm and looked great. I had forgotten how intense the soundmixes notably for ‘Chamber of Secrets’ is, the Quidditch scenes are quite a ride.

Giles
Giles commented about Ziegfeld Theatre on Dec 10, 2008 at 2:18 pm

or to continue the topic on hand, maybe Soderbergh could film ‘Cleopatra’ in 70mm and showcase them as such at theatres like the Ziegfeld that CAN project 70mm features.
