The last 3-D movie I saw on DVD at home was “Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over”, which was released in red-and-blue 3D in theaters and was one of the last old 3-D movies made in that format (“Sharkboy and Lavagirl” also comes to mind even thought I didn’t see it). The last IMAX 3-D movie I saw was L5: First city in Space, which was a short movie. I never saw a long IMAX 3-D movie before, if there’s one I want to see, it might be “Tron Legacy”. FYI, Phish 3-D is coming out next weekend for all those rock fans. I’m sure it will sell well. I’m glad that AMC didn’t raise ticket prices for 2D 35mm and digital showings.
I remember reading those pop-up books. When I grew up, I found where they made it go pop up. The first 3-D movie I saw as a kid wasn’t in the theater but one of those chiller feature movies edited for TV called “The Mask” as well as “Creature from the Black Lagoon”, both of which were taped off Channel 11 in the 1980’s and preserved for me and my classmates at a classroom party for Halloween back in the early 90’s. The glasses had the 11 Alive logo on them (red and blue) and I hated them because the images wouldn’t pop up. I have a tape of “The Mask” complete with 3-D glasses and hosted by Elvira. 3-D has come a long way since then.
Interesting question! So far, I think the concert movies were all native (originally shot) in 3D (U23D, Hannah Montana, Dave Matthews, Kenny Chesney, and the upcoming Phish). And portions of X-Games 3D were also native. I don’t think they’ll go the conversion route for concerts, sports, documentaries and other non-plot movies. It would only make them look like the “pop-up” books you buy for kids. BTW, just read that MEN IN BLACK 3D has been announced.
I know. I wonder how it would affect live 3D concerts and sporting events as they might add realism to them.
My two cents on post-production 3D conversions: They work ok on CGI (CHICKEN LITTLE, TOY STORY) but not on live action. ALICE was only fair (the live portions) and CLASH was a total disaster. The 3D added NOTHING. Of course, any conversion by Cameron (TITANIC) would probably set the standard for conversions just as AVATAR appears to be the new standard for native 3D. Regarding any of the past “classic” blockbusters (the planned STAR WARS TRILOGY, etc.), they’ll have to get them right or, once again, 3D’s reputation will suffer.
hahahaha. I was watching Ninja Assassin a few days ago and thought how cool it would’ve been if they converted that into 3d with all the blood spurting on screen. Slimshady, with 5 3D movies playing this weekend, will more projectors come in the next few weeks to show more 3D movies? The last time NIghtmare on Elm Street was in 3D was Freddy’s Dead (the last 10 minutes in red-blue 3D). I guess by Friday advance tickets will be on sale for Iron Man 2 in IMAX…wonder how good the DMR would look on a IMAX-lite screen come May 7.

This coming week will be a first…five 3D movies in the same week. CLASH shares a RealD with KENNY, ALICE shares a RealD with DRAGON which, in turn, shares the IMAX with AVATAR. And AVATAR returns this August with six additional minutes of footage. Theaters with only one digital screen must be flipping coins. I’m surprised Disney didn’t shoot OCEANS in 3D. Cameron could have shown them how effortlessly.
Looks like they’re holding back until the summer season i guess. Once in awhile, there are sporadic power outages at this theater. Does it use the same power as the outer stores in the mall? I heard Panera had an outage. Maybe it’s time to upgrade the electricity for the theaters and use solar energy lol. Tomorrow Avatar is unleashed on Bluray, JJD, and the movie will still play this weekend in late nights in IMAX 3D.
advance showtimes are not available for the 22nd for most movies at this theater save for the kenny chesney movie. Wonder if AMC is installing new projectors for the upcoming weekend? This also is common at east hanover and wayne and clifton commons.
And people complain about how much i write about NATIONAL HILLS THEATRE which was a real movie theatre and not some multi-plex. Have a great Day Justin,my arm is beat from the scrolling . Worked for GCC ,but never AMC.They outta love you.
there was a power outage today at this theater. It only lasted one hour from around 11 until 12:30 p.m.
avatar is back this weekend in imax 3d. Only 11 p.m. showing tonight. How to train your dragon will still play in imax 3d. Alice has two 3d showings. Clash is playing its third weekend in 3d. Wonder what next weekend of the 23rd will bring.
I know. Any word on if Alice in Wonderland will still play in both 3D and 2D? I was thinking of taking my cousin and my aunt to see it before it’s out of the theaters so that Disney could create a DVD/Bluray version of the movie in May for release in June. Also JJD, Avatar is coming out on home media one week from Friday. It won’t have any special features or commentary, just the film presented in its flat ratio as intended by Cameron and shown in the highest quality audio and picture possible. It will still look good in 2D, though.
The last I read was that it was at Disney World and Toronto and planned for some big cities (Los Angeles, Dallas). Haven’t seen any rollout schedule. Also that shares of IMAX are under pressure because of this IMAX-like experience. Hopefully, we’ll see it installed in at least one auditorium at Rockaway.
BTW, the first concert film in 3D will be showing at this theater from April 21-May 2….featuring Kenny Chesney. This past weekend was a close call at the box office, as the top 3 films averaged around $25 million. I think it will still be the top 3 for the weekend, even though there are a few new movies coming out that will do poorly (with the exception of Kick-Ass). JJD, any word on if ETX will come to this theater?
btw, slow weekend at the box office. One of my friends who works for amc, paul, saw some stupid horror movie called The Black Waters of Echo’s Pond, which is also playing in newark and in clifton commons. It’s not doing well at the box office, and it will be out of the theaters by next weekend. Horror movie tend to do poorly at this theater save for paranormal activity, which delivered blair witch like crowds to this theater. The original blair witch must’ve scared up a crowd at the old rockaway theaters. Now here comes two superhero movies opening a week apart…I think Kick-Ass will do better than The Losers and will do well until Iron Man 2 blasts the competition away.

Hey Slimshady, you commented on two new york city theaters getting all 4k digital by may. Is rockaway getting all screens 4k (excluding the digital imax)? That could mean no more blurry and scratchy film prints and hello to more than hd picture and clear digital sound.
I agree, JJD. Too much 3D is a bad thing, not to mention too much IMAX movies. I can’t wait for Avatar to return to Rockaway so I can see the director’s cut in IMAX. I liked the movie, but the plot was a bit confusing.
Actually, it’s the fourth if you count AVATAR’s spillover into 2010, followed by ALICE, DRAGON, then CLASH. All held the No. 1 spot. Fewer people saw CLASH in 3D than they did for previous entries due to 1-higher ticket prices, 2-competition with ALICE and DRAGON, and 3-negative publicity over the “conversion”. Yet, it did well domestically and worldwide. They need to get this conversion stuff right if they’re going to do it at all. We’re undoubtedly going to be dealing with some bad 3D movies eventually (as with 2D) and don’t need to add another layer of mediocrity. This crunch period will end soon and these movies will start achieving their full revenue potential as more screens are added.
looks like clash is the second movie in 2010 to top the box office in 3D. It grossed a bit more than Dragon but couldn’t crowd people like Alice in Wonderland did. The grosses will drop based on bad word of mouth, and won’t last as long as the most popular 3d movie of all time, Avatar, which still has the best 3d of any movie, period. I’m so ready for Iron Man 2 in digital IMAX, since it will be interesting to see Tony Stark in all his giant robot sharpness.
Must be an editing mistake according to Movie tickets. I last checked and now titans is on one 3d screen while alice and dragon share one screen. Thanks for the update, JJD.
Are you sure they added a third 3D screen? According to MovieTickets, TITANS appears to be in 2D on two screens and in 3D on only one.
Why is everyone comparing the “disappointing” (as they describe it) results of DRAGON to last year’s MONSTERS VS. ALIENS? There’s no comparison. MONSTERS VS. ALIENS didn’t have the price increase to contend with…nor any 3D competition, i.e., ALICE. I think $43M is pretty darn respectable, considering the circumstances. I don’t have a good feeling about TITANS though. Neither the movie nor the conversion looks up to par with what’s been out so far. Hope I’m wrong.
