Yes, it would be tedious to go through the newspapers on microfilm, but that’s the most likely way in which you’re going to obtain the information you are seeking. By coincidence, just recently I conducted a week-by-week search covering a 37-year span in an effort to reconstruct the exhibition history of the NATIONAL in Los Angeles. A tedious and slow process…but also rewarding. Granted, the NATIONAL has been a single screener its entire existence, so I imagine it was “easier” than a similar search would be for the ROUTE 4.

There might be someone out there who has kept track of the ROUTE 4’s playdates, but I suspect the likely answer to your question would be for you to conduct the research yourself, as tedious as it may be. The owner of the theatre would have records of the bookings, but…(1) I’d be surprised if they would allow you to access them, (2) they would almost certainly not exist in a single document, and (3) the theatre has changed ownership many times which would complicate one’s ability to obtain access to a full set of bookings…which brings us right back to looking this info up yourself in the newspaper.

As for the ROUTE 4’s 70mm bookings, Bill Kallay and I attempted to account for these, and they can be searched year by year in the article 70mm In New York. Interesting stuff, for sure, but the 70mm bookings represented only a fraction of the total bookings over the years at the ROUTE 4.

Thanks, Justin, for posting the link to The Record’s article.

One minor error I spotted was in reference to the number of opening-day bookings of “Star Wars” in the state of New Jersey. The article’s author claims there were three; my research indicates there were four (two in greater New York City, two in greater Philadelphia).

For more info, see: May 25, 1977: A Day Long Remembered (I may as well start circulating this article since the anniversary is approaching!

And why aren’t they exact dates??? Am I correct that you used microfilm of New York City area newspapers (The New York Times, Village Voice, etc.) to do the research? With all the time it would take to transport oneself to a library, request/retrieve the microfilm, thread up the microfilm reader, etc., why wouldn’t the researcher spend just an extra moment securing the exact start date for the film? In most cases, the exact starting date could be found on the same roll of microfilm as the incorrectly cited date.

Al, I’m not trying to poo-poo your work (quite the contrary, as I enjoy these types of historical lists and wish there were more of them), but I really don’t understand your approach or your lame responses to my questions.

I find it [sarcasm on] amazing [sarcasm off] that, for instance, you would know and cite in a subsequent post the exact start date for “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return Of The Jedi,” yet would still identify them with an incorrect date on your list just because the incorrect date fell on a Friday or whatever date you chose to cite at that point in your research.

Take a look at this list I put together for the NATIONAL in Los Angeles for an example of one approach to these types of lists. (Scroll to my first of two posts made on May 14, 2007.) And, yes, the dates given are exact (barring an error on my part) regardless of which day of the week a given film opened.

The display ad for “The Ex” lists it as, simply, “National Theatre” with no owner identified. It no longer appears in Mann’s directory, nor does it (yet) appear in the independent theatre directory.

Mark Campbell:
OK, the list of films that played the NATIONAL has been posted on its Cinema Treasures page. I hope you and others enjoy it and that it brings back fond memories. And, you’re right, the list is “wildly long”!

The article I mentioned is still a few days from completion, and so I thought I’d give the list a test spin.

Vito,
Thanks for clarifying. This supports the belief that at least during the 1960s both sides could run 70mm. (“Cleopatra” played a reserved-seat run in the NORTH house.)

Then why did you list “Star Wars” with a Wednesday date? (The 25th of May in ‘77 was a Wednesday.)

Then what is the point of citing a specific date if they are merely approximate? Maybe a disclaimer at the head of the list would’ve been appropriate?

[Sorry, I meant to select “Preview” to check the link (for obvious reasons) and accidentally hit “Submit]

Here’s a link to a page from the “70mm in NY” photo gallery that showcases a few newspaper ads from the HICKSVILLE NORTH & SOUTH/MID-PLAZA CINEMA 6. Sorry, we don’t have any photographs of the place, just ads.

SUPERMAN opened 12/15/78
STAR WARS re-issue opened 08/15/79

D. Packard:
If you’re referring to this theatre in Marina del Rey, then the 70mm presentations shown there (if the 70mm stuff was correctly promoted) was:

RETURN OF THE JEDI
GHOST BUSTERS
2010
ALIENS
THE LAST BOY SCOUT
LAST ACTION HERO

You’d think they would’ve run more than that, but the theatre was not in a prime location and seemed to get 70mm prints only when a large run was made, which was not the case with most titles released in 70. Now, maybe they ran some others on a moveover.

OK, sorry folks. Back to the AVCO…

In a May 6 post on the NATIONAL page, I mentioned Bill Kallay and I working on a tribute article. Have no fear, the intent is to include the list in the article.

Be patient! We hope to get it posted in a few days. Thanks for your interest.

As William just stated, the Westwood first run of “Dragonslayer” was at the AVCO in an upstairs auditorium. (I believe “For Your Eyes Only” was booked into the AVCO’s big house.)

I have a list of everything that played the NATIONAL…and can confidently state that “Dragonslayer” did not have an engagement there. If it did play there it would have been for a one-off test screening, sneak preview, premiere or midnight show. “Raiders Of The Lost Ark” opened two weeks before “Dragonslayer” and was playing the NATIONAL during that time.

Did you see “Raiders” at the NATIONAL during its first couple of weeks? Maybe there was a “Dragonslayer” trailer that you’re remembering?

D. Packard: regarding “Close Encounters,” I may have misunderstood your post, or perhaps you weren’t clear. Are you describing the CORONET in Westwood or the CORONET in San Francisco?

“Poltergeist” in 70mm in Marina del Rey? Not according to this.

“Close Encounters” at the CORONET? In 1986? Are you maybe thinking of a different movie as “CE3K” didn’t play the CORONET nor was it released in ‘86? “Labyrinth,” maybe?

Ah, the Trilogy… March 28, 1985… Nine theatres in the whole world… The day before the “Return Of The Jedi” re-release…

The cities and theatres involved in this one-time-only charity event were: Chicago (Carnegie), Dallas (Northpark), Denver (Continental), Los Angeles (Egyptian), Los Angeles (Avco), New York (Warner Twin), San Francisco (Coronet), Seattle (Cinema 150), Toronto (Uptown).

Great list, JRS40! One minor correction regarding “The Empire Strikes Back”: it opened on Wednesday, May 21, 1980 rather than the Friday the 23rd.

List of the original May 21, 1980 bookings of ‘The Empire Strikes Back.’

Just wanted to mention in case some of you aren’t aware that on the From Script To DVD website we have recently posted a historical reference list of Cinerama presentations in New York City. It, of course, includes the many Cinerama films that played this theatre.

And don’t forget we also have a companion list for Cinerama presentations in Los Angeles.

Has anyone read the new “Making Of Star Wars” book? I think the book overall is fantastic and a must-read for any fan, but contained within is some erroneous information pertaining to the post-production and distribution of the film. In particular, one glaring error appears in regard to the CORONET.

To summarize, there was some controversy surrounding “Star Wars” being pulled by court order to accommodate a booking of “Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.” The book’s author, however, erroneously claims that the matter was settled by having “Close Encounters” play at the NORTHPOINT while “Star Wars” stayed at the CORONET. This, of course, is not how the matter was resolved.

“Star Wars” was sent out for re-bid and wound up a week later at the CINEMA 21; “Close Encounters” did in fact play the CORONET; “The Goodbye Girl” played the NORTHPOINT at that time.

I found the error humorous considering the author singled out the CORONET no doubt due to its proximity to the headquarters of the company that produced the movie and for the many historical links between “Star Wars” and the city of San Francisco.

(1) Lucasfilm Ltd. for many years was based in Marin County, just a short drive across the Golden Gate Bridge. Today, the company is based in San Francisco. (2) San Francisco is the city in which “Star Wars” was test-screened. (3) The CORONET was among the original theatres chosen to play the movie. (4) The CORONET had the highest boxoffice gross of the theatres in the U.S. that played the film during 1977.

You’d think that error would not have slipped through!
