About two years ago on this page, Al Alvarez posted a list of the ZIEGFELD’s bookings. I appreciated the time and effort Al put into the post as well as his intent, but I was left frustrated and short-changed by the end result.

So, with this posting, I’d like to present to Cinema Treasures readers a “new-and-improved” version of the theater’s bookings from the 1970s. The list is presented with my preferred layout & formatting. In addition, (1) release dates have been corrected, (2) bookings missing from the earlier posting have been identified and included, (3) the duration of an engagement’s booking has been provided, and (4) for those with an interest in technology and the whole moviegoing experience thing (for which this theater was well-known), a notation for presentation format has been included.

ZIEGFELD
Part I: Grand Opening & The 1970s

Compiled by Michael Coate

Not included in this filmography are test screenings, sneak-preview screenings, midnight screenings, film festivals, premieres and other private events. The dates represent the first day of commercial release, and, where known, the presentation format has been provided. (No format notation implies a 35mm presentation with monaural sound.)

About a year ago on this page, Al Alvarez posted a list of the ASTOR PLAZA’s bookings. I appreciated the time, effort and intent Al put into the post, but I was left frustrated and short-changed by the end result.

So, with this posting, I’d like to present to Cinema Treasures readers a “new-and-improved” version of the theater’s bookings from the 1970s. The list is presented with my preferred layout & formatting. In addition, (1) release dates have been corrected, (2) bookings missing from the earlier posting have been identified and included, and (3) the duration of an engagement’s booking has been provided. And, for those with an interest in technology and the whole moviegoing experience thing (for which this theater was well-known), a notation for presentation format has been included.

“Jaws 3-D” opened at the following Phoenix area theaters:
AMC FIESTA VILLAGE 6
AMC LAKES 6
AMC METRO VILLAGE 6
AMC TOWN & COUNTRY
HARKINS CAMELVIEW PLAZA
MANN CHRIS-TOWN

“The Survivors” was playing at CINE CAPRI when “Jaws 3-D” opened. CINE CAPRI did run three other 3-D features around that timeframe — “Metalstorm,” “Comin' At Ya!” and “Spacehunter” — perhaps it was one of those that you saw there?

***"According to what I’ve read so far, principle photography was NOT shot digitally"***

***"Does anybody know if this was filmed in 70MM?"***

***"My guess is that it was shot in super-35."***

Like its three predecessors, “Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull” was shot in 35mm anamorphic.

You’re welcome. And, yes, I’m almost finished compiling the 1990s data. Look for it here in a couple of weeks. (It takes a while to do this type of research, as you can imagine, so I’ve had to stagger the postings.)

Coate commented about Edens I & II Theaters on Apr 1, 2008 at 5:16 pm

Me not attending the first matinee screening of “Star Wars” is meaningless to our debate. And just because you were there is not a guarantee that you are correctly recalling all of the details of the event.

1) You claimed the 1:00-something matinee on its first day (May 27, 1977) was not advertised. I have a photocopy of that opening-day ad from the Chicago Tribune and after double and triple checking the ad copy, I can state that the early afternoon afternoon was advertised.

2) You claimed the EDENS ran “Star Wars” for about one year and that it was the last Chicago area theater to be playing it. Again, not correct. It ran there half a year, and the OAKBROOK was the last theater to play the film.

3) You claim the EDENS ran the film in 70mm. Maybe…but (a) your claim is based on a thirty-year-old memory, and (b) contradicts how the film was promoted throughout its seven-month run.

Why should I tone down my rhetoric? I thought your comment regarding an unadvertised early-afternoon matinee warranted a knee-jerk reaction.

Why would I need to double-check my ad photocopy? I stated in my previous post that I had the ad in my possession while making the post, so it is not a matter of me misremembering. I think it is you who is simply misremembering, just as you misremembered the duration of the engagement.

I don’t think there’s anything unusual or abnormal about misremembering details of an event that happened more than 30 years ago. And I’m not holding anything against you; I just think you’re going about proving your case in an unconvincing manner.

I’m willing to continue debating the matter, though (because I’d like to know definitively myself), but I do think that if any discussion regarding the “Star Wars” run at the EDENS is to continue, it should probably take place on the EDENS page instead of creating any more unnecessary drifting off topic on this ESQUIRE page.

“Generally unadvertised matinee”

“5/27 matinees weren’t common knowledge”

What the hell do you mean??? As I write this reply, I’m staring at my photocopy of the Chicago Tribune’s opening-day ad, and the EDENS was clearly advertising an early-afternoon matinee.

The EDENS' showtimes were 1:30, 3:40, 5:50, 8:10, 10:15 (and a midnight show on Fridays & Saturdays). And they were NOT promoting a 70mm presentation on opening day or at any point in its seven-month run.

“Days Of Heaven” didn’t play the VILLAGE until early 1979. The film opened initially at the BRUIN in September 1978.

Loves movies – hate going!… Great topic! A couple of comments, though.

1) What leads you to believe the film opened to the general public four days after its world premiere??? (In Washington, DC, it opened to the general public the day after the premiere. The film had a staggered release, so its release date varied by city.)

2) I think the following sentence of yours is misleading: “By the fall of 1968, it was released in 35mm anamorphic format and advertised as Cinerama in movie theaters equipped with special projection optics and a widely-curved movie screen.”

It probably wasn’t your intent, but I think a clarification is necessary. The way the sentence is written implies that the 35mm scope presentations were promoted as “Cinerama” and that these Cinerama presentations didn’t happen until many months after the premiere. For the record, during the film’s first three months of release, it was booked only in Cinerama theaters, and only the 70mm presentations shown on a deep-curve screen and in official Cinerama venues were promoted as being shown “in Cinerama.”

Are you, by chance, familiar with my article “1968: A Roadshow Odyssey”? The manner in which “2001” was distributed is discussed in detail. I’ll provide a link for anyone interested in reading it rather than posting here the whole text. I will, however, post a revised and re-formatted list of the original reserved-seat “roadshow” presentations during the initial first-run bookings, the majority of which were shown in 70mm.

Here’s some additions & corrections for the bookings list.

1) “The Killing Fields” (in the 1985 section) is missing a move-over notation.

2) “Outrageous Fortune” (1987) ran for 7 weeks, not 3.

3) The films that played during the one-day, all-day Columbia fest in 1974 were:

The Bridge On The River Kwai
Dr. Strangelove
From Here To Eternity
Funny Girl
His Girl Friday
It Happened One Night
Mr. Deeds Goes To Town
Mr. Smith Goes To Washington
On The Waterfront
The Professionals

Mark… Instead of the BRUIN or PLAZA, would you settle for the AVCO or a DOME update?

1) “Best Of” Showcase

02.14.2003 … CHICAGO
02.15.2003 … SPIRITED AWAY / CHICAGO
02.16.2003 … SPIRITED AWAY / THE PIANIST

2) No. The Dome didn’t get digital projection until 2005. (One of the ArcLight screens had digital projection prior to the Dome, though. Maybe that’s what you’re thinking of?)

For those readers interested in these playdate/booking history lists, I should mention that in addition to the DOME and NATIONAL lists, I’ve also posted playdate listings for other Los Angeles area theaters including the AVCO (Screen #1, 1972-1993) and the VILLAGE (1980s & 1990s). I also recently posted one for the CINE CAPRI in Phoenix, AZ.

Jamie in Las Vegas…

Nice reminiscence on “Indiana Jones” and working at CINEMA EAST!

One correction: “Star Wars” (the 1977 original) did not play at CINEMA EAST for over one year. It ran there for 26 weeks, exactly one half year. (It was at RAINTREE where it played for over a year; 53 weeks to be exact.)

AVCO CENTER CINEMA I

Compiled by Michael Coate

This filmography represents playdates for the AVCO’s #1 auditorium (downstairs, 1,100+ seats); the smaller-capacity upstairs cinemas (#2 & #3) are not the subject of this work. In addition, note that the duration data cited represents only the time a film played on screen #1 even though in numerous cases a film began its booking in an upstairs auditorium or continued playing in an upstairs auditorium upon being replaced downstairs by a new film.

Not included in this filmography are test screenings, sneak-preview screenings, midnight screenings, premieres and other private events. The dates represent the first day of commercial release and, where known, the presentation format has been provided. (No format notation implies a standard 35mm presentation with monaural sound. A format notation with an * is an unconfirmed stereo presentation.) The principal references were archived microfilm of the Los Angeles Times newspaper and the web article 70mm in Los Angeles.

RE = Re-Issue/Return Engagement
MO = Move-over (i.e. continuation of an engagement from another theater or screen in complex)

“Dolby Stereo” installed/first presentation: May 1977
“Dolby Stereo SR” installed/first presentation: February 1989
“Cinema Digital Sound” (CDS) installed/first presentation: December 1990
“Digital Theater Systems” (DTS) installed/first presentation: June 1993

The theater became THX certified in May 1983.

Following the weekend of Sep. 3-5, 1993, the large downstairs auditorium was closed and renovation work began (i.e. splitting into two auditoriums). The two upstairs auditoriums remained open during the renovation, and in late November ‘93 the AVCO re-opened as a 4-plex with its two “new” downstairs auditoriums.
