Thanks. I’m pretty sure that there is a theater already listed on CT that is at this approximate address. It showed adult films in the seventies. I just can’t put my finger on which theater it is.
If this theater was just south of Santa Monica Boulevard, it seems like I posted some photos of it last summer under another name. The building is now a supermarket. If this seems familiar to anyone, let me know.
It’s still there. I took a batch of photos in August 2007, which are posted above. The building was for sale last September, per the preceding comment. Right now the building is unused.
Right. I could say nothing, or I could make a qualified statement and then hopefully get some corroboration. I wouldn’t have said “Please change the architect to Albert C. Martin”. I thought it was enough to raise the question and then go from there.
I drove by the dome a few days ago, for the first time since they built all the retail around it. Quite a difference heading down Sunset from the west. When the dome was surrounded by parking lots, the first glimpse was striking. Now you have to wait until the middle of the block to see the theater. Too bad.
The Paramount was part of the Famous Players Canadian Corporation in the early Sixties.

The Majestic was part of the Malco chain in the early sixties.
The theater was still around in 1963. It was part of the Malco chain then.
This was a Malco Theater in the early sixties. The subcorp. was Citizens Theater Co. The same group also ran the Hi-Y Drive-In in Henderson.

There is a 1/28/08 article from the LA Times about the renovation project posted on the Los Angeles Theater page.
Last July the marquee was advertising a night club. The club may be gone, that’s why they took those panels down. Just a guess.
That’s an interesting photo. I hadn’t considered the concept of segregated drive-ins before, but it went with the times, I suppose.
If anyone is driving past here soon, let me know if the screen has been taken down.

This theater has been listed twice. I’m not sure if the name is Kenda or Kendra, however.
