I just heard on the radio today that this theater has been “refreshed”. New seats, new concessions, new paint, new carpet! Grand reopening is this friday!

This theater closed and was demolished in 2000 to make way for the Dillard’s wing in the mall. I miss this theater. I saw so many movies there as a kid.
I have heard from several sources that UNCW (the current owner of this property) plans on Demolishing the theater building to add more room for parking. Lack of funds has delayed this tragic, yet necessary task.
Well, all the local theaters Carmike purchased from Stewart and Everett were old, out dated styles. There is no way any of those old complexes could have competed with the new, modern, stadium style regardless of how well maintained. Carmike built us a cinema 12 here in town soon after closing most of the old theaters. In 2002 they made that theater a 16plex. I can’t really complain about Carmike closing the CB cinema 4, however another $1.50 theater in town would be nice.
Back in early June (2010) I noticed “FOR LEASE” signs on the theater. The theater however remained open so I decided to see one last movie there. Being that its the last of the old style theaters in the area I’m glad I did. I saw “SPLICE” in auditorium 1. In seeing this movie I have come to understand sadly, why these old theaters are gone.
-The air handler was noisy and cycled on and off during the film which was distracting
-The theater smelled musty
-At times I could overhear the movie playing in auditorium 2
-Sound quality was poor and screen was smaller than the screens in the local stadium style theaters
-floor was barely sloped (common for theaters of this vintage)
I’m sad to see this theater go. If I was'nt a regular at the local stadium style theaters I probbably wouln’t have noticed most of
these things.
Was located at 5335 Oleander drive. It was owned and operated by Stewart and Everett Theaters of Charlotte, NC. Stewart and Everett closed this single screen drive-in in 1980 when they decided to build a “modern” 6 screen theater in its location. In 1983 the “CINEMA 6” was built on this property. (information on this property as the “CINEMA 6” can be found under its own listing)
Was built in 1983 by Stewart and Everett Theaters on the site of the former Oleander drive in. Carmike took over December 1986 after their purchase of the Stewart and Everett Theaters chain. The theater became a second run theater in the early 00s. I remember going to see 2nd run movies there is 2005 for $1.50. Carmike closed the theater in January 2006 when The University of North Carolina at Wilmington made an offer to purchase. The property is currently owned by UNCW. The parking lot is used as overflow for students and the theater building is used for UNCW’s film studies program. On the theater building still remains the sign “CINEMA 6” wich until recently was still lit at night for some reason. The building is
white stucco and doesn’t show any signs of decay.
Being that I am a curious local from the area I have done research on this theater. My research is from old local newspaper articles and such. I believe my contribution here is very accurate.
This theater was built in 1983 and opened mid 1983 by Litchfield Theaters. In 1987 or 1988 this theater became a United Artist theater when United Artist Entertainment purchased the bankrupt Litchfield Theater chain. This theater remained open (despite its decay) until it closed in October 2002. The theater property was purchased by the University of North Carolina in early 2003 for about 1.5 million dollars. The old theater’s parking lot is used as overflow for students and the theater building still stands being used for storage. The theater’s exterior paint is a decaying Salmon color. The exterior of most of the building is stucco(rear auditorium section) and the front concession/games section is wood. The sign “GAMES” is still in place on the front of the building and the old marquee that once displayed movies and showtimes is empty. I have recent exterior photos of this old theater if someone wants me to upload them.

This theater is slowly converting to digital. Auditoriums 1, 7, 8, and 16 are digital so far. A good friend of mine is a manager there.
Demoliton signs have been put up by the road….the end is near.
