I must have been buzzed if/when I wrote that the Polk was in good condition. The place is okay but it isn’t as well maintained as the Fair Theater on Astoria Blvd. I was able to see the old projectors and the owner offered to sell them to me. But I don’t have the money for that.

This theater is a good bargain. The matinee is $6.75. At times the escalator doesn’t work and there is only one elevator to the main floor. You have to walk up the stairs. Once there the multiplex is nothing to write home about. Just a big box. I noticed that they don’t do a good job of cleaning. There is pop corn spilling out of the machine, the stairs leading the main lobby needs a good shampooing. But once you sit down to watch the movie the seats are comfortable.

I took a walk to the former Rainbow Theater. I remember this place very well but only as a church.

When I was 18 (I am now 39) I went to the Graham to see the porn movie. I remember my friend and I had to show our birth certificates to the confused-looking ticket holder. The theater was dark, cold, and very run-down. I only remember this theater showing porno movies in the 1970’s. I am surprised that it lasted as long as it did.

When did this theater start showing XXXX movies?

I have been in this theater. They are still showing porn movies. Too bad they won’t let anyone photograph the place ( I asked). You go up a flight of stairs and make a sharp right. There is a ticket booth with a turnstyle. You pay your $8.00 dollars and push the turnstyle and you are in the ‘lobby’. They have 3 television sets: One is tunned to regular television, the to other is showing gay porn (and for some reason it is hidden behind a candy machine), and the third is playing ‘straight’ porn. On the left hand is the door that leads to the ‘gay’ porn. It is very dark and it has less than 100 seats.

There is a lot of sexual activity going on in the theaters. The room showing ‘straight’ porn is much larger. All in all it is a very tacky place.
The Little Theater which is located a few blocks before the Cameo is in much better condition.

It now costs $15 to see a porn movie at the Fair.

Hello PKoch. Yes that was definitely a typo. It seems clear to me from these postings that so much has changed in the neighborhoods where these theaters once stood. And it hasn’t always been a change for the better.

I am looking for information on a theater that might have stood on the corner of Jamaica and 90th Street. It is now a catering hall.

Unfortunately I was not able to supply a direct link to the Jefferson or Rainbow Theaters. Select Photographs from the upper left, and enter in the names of the theaters. I hope this works. They have two great pics of the theaters.

I presently live in Cypress Hills. I live on Grant Avenue between Jamaica and Etna. I often take the J train to get to Broadyway Junction to transfer to the A/C/L trains. The B18 bus was scrapped last year. The B13 bus absorbed much of the route serviced by the now-defunct B13.

Did the Williamsburg have a marquee? I went there several times in the late 1970’s ( I saw Ruby, Abby, Sinbad). I don’t remember the marquee. I do wish I could find a picture from the 1970’s of the theater.

I did notice that the marquee was lit last week. I couldn’t tell for what reason since I was on the J train.

Now that downtown Brooklyn is one the upswing it would be a great idea for LIU to return the old theater to a performance space.

Doesn’t the city have to show that the Glass Slipper is structually unsound in order to seize it under eminent domain?
Kensington should incorporate the theater into its plan.

Scholes188 commented about Publix Theatre on Jan 15, 2005 at 2:21 pm

How can local or state government seize property by citing eminent domain? I just read the definition and it doesn’t seem to hold water. Yet local governments are seizing property all the time and then turning them over to developers. How does that benefit the public?

Scholes188 commented about Publix Theatre on Jan 15, 2005 at 2:02 pm

It is safe to say that the theater will be torn down to make way for a high-rise. The interior has been destroyed so unless someone with deep pockets come forwards this theater will be history. It is sad. Do you really think that Guiliani gave a damn about saving New Yorkers from porn shops? Times Square was an area that many people avoided like the plague. But suddenly someone decided that the time was ripe for developing the area.
