Lost Memory, that one is in Scotland !

The Tatler’s that I recall( er hem researched ) were cheap 70’s take-overs that made a quick buck out of soft-porn exploitation, often in run-down…or soon to be running-down areas…eg Walthamstow (former Empire cinema 1913 ), The art-deco restored Rio in Hackney ( Dalston exactly ), The Classic, the first ever called that, in South Croydon
Hope that helps a bit ?

Kevin

Paul , and others in their quest, I am positive there was a book issued about 6 years ago…. I have to try and trackitdown at home (hidden somewhere in a 100 books/booklets and about 300 post-cards on cinemas. !)

However, you may well want to check out ( and join !) The Mercia Cinema Society, which, funnily enough was started by 4 people in Birmingham, but covers all the UK and further afield

also, check out The CTA, Cinema Theatre Association

Hi I recently had a very detailed tour of many of the ‘nooks and crannies’ the only remaining decorI saw of the original is in the #biggest# screen, which is in the front stalls area, featuring that groovy 60’s panelling : screen still pretty humoungous at a very short throw, but not a touch on the previous sense of occasion one became accustomed to….

I went to this last year : it was fabulous: Herbert Bonn, the host, is a tremendously entertaining and exceedingly generous gentleman.

The projection crew were fabulous with the extremely hard work to be done.

One slight correction, the projector used is actually a very very steady DP75, one of a pair.

Tim, thanks for all your hard work: don’t give up the fight!

Have you contacted Empire Cinemas about this great cinema ?

Judging by what I have seen so far, they would be , possibly, one of the best ‘candidates’ to take it over, run it properly, restore that famous sign, employ people passionate about cinema-going and keep this lovely lady of the Odeon circuit going, and not allow property developers or people who don’t give a damn run/ruin it further ?

I have to say, hats off to Empire Cinemas, Bell Theatre Services ( Max and Lawrence particularly), Harman, Andre Mort and all the many others involved in what they have achieved at this truly flagship cinema:

I viewed Thunderball this morning, in Panavision, in mono, and it looked and sounded fabulous for what is essentially , a 41 year old film, recorded in Westrex Recording mono technologies of the day, printed from an internegative, and just looked amazing !

The staff were courteous and friendly, and I , like many fellow cinema/film fans would love to see this massive effort publicised more: and of course, to see Empire cinemas expand this care and expertise accross all their cinemas acquired and new.

and PS:

Empire Cinemas:please spread the word more about the earlies at the Empire !

Tomorrow is ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’

CJ, in the case of such a classic branding as the Odeon circuit was, and in particular to how THIS Odeon sign looks, it would be criminal to remove it, hide it from public view or other.

The Odeon Bromley, now run by the( highly exciting attitude ) still has the Odeon signage ( albeit very late Odeon branding.

Apart from all the local people knowing it as their Odeon, the name has become synonymous with going to the cinema, not unlike Hoover…

So no harm in keeping it IMHO
