I like pipe dreams..The community may not care for it, but could it not remain as a multiplex in some form. Maybe not fully restored, but in a modern type cinema? Movies are still very popular and it is in a dense area from what I see from the airplane above.
And the saga goes on & on……I will believe it when the ball & crane comes in. Still say the apartments should be built above the theater which could be restored. People need more than the tv or personal screens for entertainment!
I went to one AMC Dine-in theater and it was terrible. People chewing and talking about the food. Waiters coming and going. And the sound was so loud trying to drown it all out!!! A crazy idea I think!
I hope the day will never come that only one chain will be around. Here in Chicago we will have two new chains coming. Cinemex and Cinepolis both Mexican movie theater chains. They are building large eat-in theaters with bars etc. extra large seats, reserved seats and higher prices. This may be the last attempt to get people in before streaming is available for home use. Who knows. I have nothing against China nor Mexico but I would like to think the profits would go to the USA and be used here! Am I old-fashioned or what?
I am sure that is true but everyone loves movies…Even if they are dubbed or just sub-titled. The fact that it is in a old theater brought back to life would just make it more interesting. People would go if it were open & running and they want to see the picture not just the building as we all at CT would..
I thought Muvico was a great showplace for movies. They had so many in Florida. Real beauties! The Palace in Boca Raton & the Paradise near Miami and the Parisian in Palm Beach were top notch! When I saw the Palace’s sign changed to Cinemark, I knew they were in trouble with all the buildings built around the same time. Then I saw Carmike name added to the other Muvicos and I knew thats curtains for Muvico! I had never heard of Carmike. I am sorry AMC rules now..
Arclight is so overated. With a name like that no marquees. Two in Chicago. One blander than the other. Walk by and hardly know its a movie theater! Wonder why they chose that name which represents old way of showing films in the golden years?
Cineplex Odeon brought new life to the movie scene here in Chicago. I had high hopes for them and when they became Loews Cineplex I had even more hopes for the Loews name was always great to see and the history of the name. AMC is a bland name and the fact they are owned outside USA makes me avoid their cinemas. And they stopped masking the screens! Of course Cinemark did too.
I wonder what the crime rate is. The area looks well built up and could use a movie theatre I would imagine. It would need more than three auditoriums today. Perhaps 8 or 10 if the basement is used and they could restore the lobby. I think that would be the best use for the building. Crime rate is up around the Uptown Theater in Chicago. Both in front and behind the building. Shootings and stabbings etc. That project seems to be stuck in limbo for now.
The toy department was wonderful Scott…Isn’t that where they had the live robot “Tobor” or something like that displayed with the hands and eyes moving.. It would be around 1955-56. The Paradise was still hanging on barely. A tragedy in the making..
I am only surprised it took so long for AMC to drop LOEWS name. Wish they would have dropped AMC when they took over and called all their theatres LOEWS. But I am sure that was never even thought about…Out with the old & so on…..
I flew to NY last week and saw the RKO out of the window as I so often do. Bright sunny day and she looked so sad just standing there year after year..
1000 cars! Wonder were it was and how close to the theatre? Marbro never had free parking in the 30’s. 1950’s brought city parking with meters across Madison St. on Monroe St.
Went there many times. Hard to understand the beautiful Marbro being closed and the Alex and Crawford stayed open for awhile. There were hold-ups outside the Marbro as well as inside and we were told to keep our eyes open around us. I can only imagine what went on inside the Alex & Crawford!
With all the interest in classic movies today, one would think this theater would do its duty rather than the bigger Coronado showing these films on a big screen.. Maybe the audience isn’t there?
I think around 1950. It was taken from a video of a film that showed the west side of Chicago along Crawford Ave. I don’t remember where I saw it and had a friend stop the video so he could print it. A plain marquee considering the original, but at night with all the chasers working it looked pretty nice!
This will be a great show!!! I am bringing 6 people from Chicago. 2 years ago was so good. And don’t forget a Stan & Oliver film too !!

I would have thought this film would have been booked at the Paramount. 1941 the studios still owned their theaters I believe.

I believe the AMC takeover of Carmike was turned down by the courts. What is the history of Carmike?

Was there any fanfare for the last day of operation? I can’t remember. I know there were rumors in the neighborhood but nothing official.
I don’t remember a stage at this theater. But if they had a stage show, they must have had one. I wonder if the MARBRO & PARADISE still had theirs?

I assume they were lawyers or doctors right?

Sorry to ask but what is a laser projector vs what they use now?
I think the doors were never updated like the Marbro was in the 1940’s. I wonder why?

There goes the neighborhood !!
