What was the other cinema in Kennington that was bingo until a few years ago and now the shell of the building is housing. I think it was called ‘Granada’ when it was bingo???
I love how old cinemas were known locally as the ‘fleapit’.
Swansea had 2 wonderful examples of these and my god they lived up to the name.
Both The Castle and The Carlton are no longer showing movies to make you itch, not since the late 70s.
In the 1980s I used to go past this facade almost daily and always thought how sad it looked.
I had no idea that such a palace sat behind!

Was the auditorium still there up until demolition or was it long gone during all its different uses?
On the weekend, Feb 13/14th 2009, the pavement canopy bearing the name ‘Elysium’ (seen in the pics above) partly collapsed onto the pavement hitting a passerby and putting them in hospital.
Within hours the whole canopy was removed and the entire pavement area of the building blocked of to pedestrians.
The latest news I could find on the Monday, Feb 16th, was that Swansea City Council have now placed the building on immediate demolition status and work, Im told, will be completed before the summer.
Sad news for a very impressive building left to rot alone for the last 30 years
I saw the Odeon Richmond a few days ago from the window of an aircraft landing at Heathrow. Its quit a sight to see the huge auditorium so detached from the main foyer building. Maybe someone on here us able to put up the Google map of it?
When I saw a movie here in the mid/late 90s I couldn’t believe I was sitting in a theatre in such a terrible state of disrepair. Obviously the balcony was closed off but I would say that at least 40% of the orchestra seating was blocked off too. Many rows were missing altogether and it took me 3 seats to find one not broken. It was a fabulous experience seeing such a stunning theatre still open and showing movies. I had a good look around and it was certainly still showing signs of its once wonderful past. I cant remember what movie I saw but it was just me and six others there that evening.
Good luck to any project that saves this gem of a theatre.
