On my local East Midlands news, a group want to save this cinema and reopen it. The council has granted permission for it to be demolished for a “car park”. Expect news soon of a “suspicious” fire and the building having to be knocked down.
The building is currently being converted into a restaurant and nightclub. The ground floor and the former cafe' are to be come restaurants accessed from the Guild Street entrance.The nightclub is being built in the circle area of the cinema,this will be accessed from a new entrance that will use the original Façade at the rear of the building and use the stage area.
Any original plaster work that will be on show is to be repainted. The plans show some of the plaster work will be boxed in.I have included some photos of the ongoing work.
I have just uploaded a new photo showing the Gaumont as her new life as a restaurant.They even refurbished the centenary of cinema plaque on the front of the building. Although I have not seen many pictures of the new insides, from the revised planning details I found on line they have only used the ground floor.
The fibreglass bust that has sat on the front of the building for around 15 years has been sold by the owners.They have also sold the Zanzibar letters and stars from the canopy. All the money raised is going too a local charity.
Apparently this closed around six months ago. At the weekend someone made a report too the police as they thought the place had been broken into, when they got there they found someone had set up a cannabis farm. www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk
After reading the overview and seeing photo’s of screen 1 & 2 it seems strange that “1” was for Roadshows yet the screen in “2” seems to be bigger “image wise”. The same can be said of the old Odeon at Bradford.I saw a photo of the opening films for Nottingham Odeon and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was on in screen “2”, it was shot in Ultra Panavision 70mm.
According to the information listed on the above webpage, this is where the Empress once stud. Whilst looking for this place I did find The playhouse on Eccles Road.

In a recent news letter from the CTA, it’s been sold at auction and reported that the new owners plan to demolish the building.

It is reported that the council HAVE now purchased this building for the princely sum of £1-00.
