Just passed by this theatre today, I was glad to see that it is reopened. Doesn’t look any different except for the new Beekman Theatre logo on the old signage. The medical building on the site of the original Beekman is nearly complete.

The newly-rechristened Beekman Theatre is re-opening this Friday as an independent, with ‘What Just Happened’ showing on one screen, and a split admission of ‘Elegy’ and ‘Tell No One’ on the other. Coming attractions include ‘Zack & Miri Make a Porno’, opening next Friday, the 31st, and ‘A Christmas Tale’ on November 21st. In addition, free popcorn will be given to the first 100 patrons each day this weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday).

Only a guess here, since I don’t work in the city, but maybe Bowtie Cinemas could be involved? They are always looking for theatres, and one of their top execs use to work for Clearview, the previos operator.

A quick, interim update on the Beekman/NY One and Two… I stopped by last night and the blue-and-red NY1 and NY2 carpeting has been laid upon the steps which lead down to each theatre’s lobby. Either Solow had extra carpeting manufactured or had some additional supply previously stashed away. As promised, I’ll make an effort to find out soon any information about a re-opening date and who the operator will be.

Thanks for the clarification, Dave, and the additional information. I’ll try to stop by the theatre sometime this week and next and find out when it’ll be re-opening and who’ll be operating it.

That blue NY2 carpet is not new, it was there when I worked there in 1999 for Loews. In the theatre 1 side the carpet was the same except it had ‘NY1’ printed on it. Solow ordered and installed it without consulting Loews, and then handed them a bill for 50% of the cost. That’s the way it worked there with everything – he would buy things and make changes that Loews neither needed nor wanted, then he’d bill them for 50%, wreaking havoc on our capital expense and operating budgets. This practice probably weighed heavily in the decisions of Loews, Crown and Clearview to vacate the premises.

The Beekman/NY One and Two is about to awaken from its year-plus slumber! I walked by yesterday afternoon and there were men inside, working in the lobby. Outside, in the entrance court area, there were several pieces of cut carpet in a pile, the carpet designed similar to that found at The Paris on 58th Street – royal blue in color, with a red, cursive ‘NY2’ design throughout. I’m guessing the theatre will be run as an independent – perhaps booked and managed by the person who operates The Paris (as both buildings are owned by real estate developer Sheldon Solow) – but I can’t speak to this…

Does anybody know what’s happening with this theatre. I keep hoping it will open again.

Saw “The Runner Stumbles” (1979) here, a flop that had some merit. What I mainly remember is that in a virtually empty auditorium, a young couple came in and sat almost directly behind me and carried on throughout. Like, why would they even stay if they were so bored and/or disdainful?

Is there anything new happening with this theatre?

I walked by the Beekman and there hasn’t been any visible progress since my post from this past October 16th (and before then as well, I’d imagine). I have no idea what’s behind the hold-up, although the owner of the building isn’t known for being the easiest person to work with; perhaps some problems have cropped up as a result with the contractor(s) he hired to carry out the renovations.

I agree the Newton is a GREAT CINEMA! The company that took it over From Galaxy did not have much experience with the movie business. If Cearview or someone else takes it over I am sure it can succeed.

Showing movies 3-4 weeks after open and charging $5.00 would bring in a lot of business.

so much for that theater. Maybe Clearview should buy the newton theater over in nj and make it a good one.

Yes, Ron, and no longer listed as Clearview’s. I will send in those corrections.

Should it be listed as “Closed”?

Does anyone know what’s going on with this theater? What happened between Clearview and Solow? Does anyone have any hard facts or rumors as to if and why the deal between them fell through? Will Solow run this theater by himself? If you have any details at all, please let me know. I’m trying to investigate what’s going on. Thank you. You can also email me at

The most recent development I’ve seen, Astyanax, was the carpeting at the top of the staircases to the two cinemas having been torn out, but no substantial work having been done to the concession stands (at least from what I could tell from peering in outside). My guess – and I wish I had something more substantial to go on – is the theatre will re-open by the holidays.

Any updates? Always hated the Bkmn 1&2 sign but don’t want to see the venue permanently shuttered.

Just pased by this evening, the marquee says Renovations are underway and the theater will be reopening soon. Doesn’t look like any work is being done at all, it looks the same as always except locked and dark.

He’s probably referring to the Paris – the same landlord owns the Paris and the NY Twin (oops! excuse me! I mean the Beekman 1-2).
