Richard G: Thanks so very much for your ‘grand’ information, but I want to be sure we’re talking about the same Grand Theatre as many were named that…..the one I’m referring to is in Westfield NY on Route 20. A friend of mine who has sent me some b/w photos of the Grand and a few newspaper articles mentions the last owner being a Theodore Blakley of Erie PA, but the name Deitner is not mentioned. You mentioned the Angola Drive-In, but are you aware of the restored theatre in Angola? Hamburg friends of ours took us there one day 2 summers ago. You also mentioned the Drive-In Theatre Motel so I assume you are referring to the one by that name that was also in Westfield. If your tour was inside the Westfield Grand, I would love chatting with you more about this visit…how it occurred, what more you may recall, etc.? It was art deco in style and set on the corner of Main and N. Portage Streets. The candy counter was on the left as you walked in and you could see the screen from that vantage point. It had a particular smell upon entering the theatre that wasn’t bad just a memory that I hold dear, now and the floor between the rows, not the carpeted aisle was usually sticky from spilled pop! My longtime girlfriend and I went to see our first movie
together there and it saw Pillow Talk with Rock Hudson and Doris Day! I plan to meet with the last manager of the theatre in May and also meet with a man who was involved with the demolition committee. Tonawanda NY this coming summer also as that theatre still gives organ concerts!
Hi Patsy, A man whose last name is Deitner was the second to last owner of the Grand. He is still alive an living in Angola, N.Y. Im sure he’d be happy to supply you with some history. The Angola Drive-In, which is still operational, is owned by his son and would be one way to get in contact with him. I know they owned the theatre in Silver Creek and possibly the Drive-In Theatre Motel as well. I managed to get into the Grand after it closed and took a little tour. It was very dark so I couldn’t see much but I do remember the cement stairs leading the dressing room were crumbling. While on the stairs you could plainly here the water flowing by — I had visions of the huge adjacent body of water rushing through the crumbling cement.
“Probably most notably were the Blatt brothers who during their prime owned approximately 25 theatres in the Western New York area.” This quote interests me and if anyone can tell me if they owned the demolished Grand Theatre in Westfield NY at one time I would appreciate it. Thanks.
HI, I’m from Hamburg, and live less than 5 minutes (walking distance) from the Palace, It is my personal favorite theater that I have ever been too, and the rates are always extremely lower than any “mainstream” theatres. ($3)
And I believe Metro-North has a stop not a block away from it!!!

I try to visit the Palace at least once a year because not only is it an enjoyable experience but it’s also a bargain. At the time of the above submission (August 14, 2004) two of us saw “The Village” and split a medium popcorn and a jumbo drink— the total price including admission was $10.00. Oh yes, the popcorn is served in a tub not one of those bags which leaks the butter all over your pants.
A lovely theatre, good movies, great popcorn, and bargain prices — let’s all go to the Palace.
