I can’t say for sure because i live inAugusta now, maybe someone from Athens will see this and let you know. It was in walking distance of the BEECHWOOD 1 and 2.
GEORGIA SQUARE was the place to go for movies.THE PALACE, CLASSIC TRIPLE, ALPS and BEECHWOOD was it. The ATHENS DRIVE IN Closed sooon after the mall opened. it was in walking distance of the mall. The Palace was a Plitt Theatre. Classic was a Georgia Theatre. The little five plex was probably opened in the mid 80’s after I had gotten out of the business.See Georgia Square on CT, for more stories about movies and Athens moviegoers if you have not already Doonyman!
Ulver, I have an Atlanta constituion paper Oct. 19 1974 and tha ad shows it playing at the WEIS DORAVILLE. Maube, they were playing day and date even though they were close to each other,
I have been all over east Tenn, but never your way or Memphis. I can tell you one thing you were big enough to land the Oilers, my Son Kyle’s favorite team. It broke his heart when they changed the name. So you guys are pretty big, No Atlanta, but no Augusta.
Kyle is a Falcon fan now.
I alaways liked OLIVER even though i saw it at age 13 or 14. I thought it was pretty good, and Oliver Reed gave a great performance. Aren’t the two child stars Mark Lester and Jack Wild dead? Drugs I bet.
Yeah, but this is a small town and a town that prides itself on saving Historical buildings. You aren’t talking about Parking lots like in NASHVILLE.I talked over the phone to the History Society and they were upset about not being able to save it.A man and wife i was told have a little coffee shop there that is styled like an old theatre. But I have never been there.
Projectionist Bill Barkley said when they closed the Regency he was quite sure the print CASINO was still in the booth. Somehow it never got shipped out.Wonder if it is still in that dark moldy booth?
I never knew Elvis worked in a theatre.I know Kenny Rogers did he told me so when worked at GCC in Athens,Ga. I guess you saw so many country stars in Nashville you lost count.
Projectionist Bill Barkley tells this story. “We are running a matinee and this is in 1971 when Vice President Spiro Agnew is in a parade on Broad Street, when the Secert Sevice comes in the booth and out the back door on the roof, for security reasons.” That was a first.
CLIFFORD, I asked Beverly about going to the other movie .X rated! her mom would have killed me. even though we saw SAILOR WHO FELL WITH GRACE FROM THE SEA at the Imperial a pretty hard core R rated film. I am not much on musicals, but CAmelot! My Favorite Musical is OLIVER which i saw in 70mm at NATIONAL HILLS THEATRE.
Bottom of the barrel, We are getting the Gay comedy THE RITZ. in this neighborhood theatre. We can only hope it sorta goes unnoticed because this is Not a West Augusta Movie. THE RITZ plays one week and is gone. The same run we had on MAME. Both Turkeys. I thought MAME would better with the senior crowd, but they stayed away.
Even though I worked for Plitt Theatres in Augusta. We all looked up to the PHIPPS PLAZA as a number one theatre in our Southeastern Chain.I always wanted to visit it ,but never did.
Yeah, We had the WEIS CINEMA CENTRE AND WEIS DRIVE IN here in Augusta. On one side of the Twin they would run THE STORY OF O and in the other theatre they had CAMELOT. I remember because my girlfriend made me take her to see it. I worked for ABC THeatres and PLitt Theatres in Augusta. Even though sometimes they Get GODFATHER 2 first run most of the time it would off set with an X rated flick on the other side. Both are on CT.
Yeah, I thought that was an awful small lot,but i remember going through the Virginia mountains back in the early 70’s and i never saw such a small drive In located in those mountains it was tiny. My Almanac book could be wrong.

I worked at GCC at Georgia Square Cinemas 1.2.3.4. in the Mall. The Beechwood at that time in the mid 80’s was a twin theatre. It played first run.
THE ALPS theatre was up on the hill on the lefthand side of the road across from the Beechwood theatres. It sat on the end of the lot.
