Today, shares of IMAX are up big on rumors that Sony is planning a buyout of the film company. Can this mean that Imax digital will have 4k projection made by Sony? Stay tuned….
Ur welcome MikeRogers. Have a happy new year. I predict that by 2011 theater #9 would be an ETX given the size of the theater. It will seem unlikely that the surround sound from these theaters will bleed into another theater, causing minor rumbles in another auditorium. The IMAX at AMC in Rockaway is the loudest of the 16 screens and the brightest and blurriest. Is the 3D better than IMAX 2D? I might go see “Tron Legacy” in that format for this last week before Green Hornet comes out, a movie that I won’t see since I prefer the original 1960’s tv show and the 1940’s serials.

As 2010 draws to a close, the big news at this theater was that it became all digital by October, and that the era of rolling film in Rockaway that had passed from the old theaters is no more. Ticket and concession prices jumped, and crowds went to the movies in rare form, instead opting to see indie films, 3-D spectacles that were true 3-D as well as IMAX, and seeing the Fathom Events such as the Met in HD which has been a moneymaker for this theater since it debuted in late 2008. What will 2011 bring? Possibly more 3-D crap, movies that the audience doesn’t care, and more price increases as the theater approaches its 5th anniversary.

As expected, this theater is closed due to the snowstorm.
That movie was upconverted. As for 3-D movies at this theater since the 3d projection was installed, the longest running 3-D engagemnt is still Avatar, both in IMAX 3-D and Real-D 3D. 2-D 35mm would be The Dark Knight. Digital 4k 2D would be Inception (which is also the same for the IMAX 2D version). There hasn’t been a major IMAX 2D movie that was shot using IMAX cameras that has played long at this theater. Attendance at this theater will be down today because of the big snowstorm. The theater is still open. The manager of this theater knows pretty well when to close the theater early, as it was the case with the Avatar opening one year ago this month.
“Gullivers Travels”, according to the critic at USA TODAY, was made only because of 3-D and nothing more.Sad.

the top four movies right now are in 3D:
Tron, Yogi Bear, Narnia, Tangled
and the “longest running” movie this year at 166 weeks and still running (Despicable Me) as well.
If this keeps up, Rockaway will have to upgrade a few more systems to handle it.
Expect low attendance for this film in Rockaway. Will do well at the Claridge in Montclair.
I agree mike. Five 3D screens on Xmas Day, will show 5 3D movies, which I think is a record for this theater. Tangled 3D and Tron 3D are the only true 3D features while the other 3 are fake 3D. The King’s Speech will be playing at this theater as well. It has gotten some of the best reviews out of any movie this winter. How it will survive at this theater will depend on word-of-mouth, awards, and star power.
USA TODAY,Dec 20 2010 has an article on it Justin [Tron]. I think I have TALKED myself into seeing “TRUE GRIT”.I can only hope it has been deicated to the Duke.
Surprisingly, Tron outgrossed its predecessor by a lot. 24% of the film’s grosses came from the IMAX showings. Judging from some people that I talked to, there are mixed reviews. Hopefully Tron is still playing in both 3D and IMAX 3D so I can enjoy watching it instead of that Jack Black movie that was converted into 3D.
Megamind in 2d? That sucks. I saw that in 2d. Narnia and Yogi are fake, while Megamind, Tron, and Tangled were filmed in real 3D. I’m planning on seeing Tron in RealD 3D because it’s less expensive than IMAX 3D. Gulliver’s Travels will be in fake 3D and that will not do well. If you see Tron 2, JJD, let me know if the 3D is good. I heard that the 3D doesn’t kick in the movie until when they enter the virtual world.
I think I figured out the answer to my question “How many projectors are (RealD) 3D-capable?” Five…1 Narnia, 1 Tangled, 2 Tron, 1 Yogi. And Megamind in 2D only. Right? Anybody?
THEATRE OWNERS take note only so much money one can spend at the theatre.If they are by-passing the Concession that is a KILLER !
According to Box Office Mojo, attendance at this theater and many others have fallen for a fourth straight month. 15-year low. I think it’s because of higher ticket prices, not lackluster big movies. As the price of AMC’s tickets go up, people will stock up on AMC gift cards and gold passes to save money and pay only for surcharges related to 3D, IMAX 2D, and IMAX 3D events. They’ll also skip on buying for salty popcorn and bad fast food and head towards panera or another restaurant after the movie is over. From what I read, the presentation of the Fathom Events is like a standard def dvd, even with the Met in HD.
Yesterday afternoon, went to see Harry Potter in digital IMAX at an 11:50 showing. The presentation of it was ok. Earlier in the showing, the trailers had a lot of brightness until when the Green Hornet trailer aired, the brightness was toned down until the IMAX think big trailer began. Most of the trailers save for the IMAX one were not shot in IMAX. If I were to see an IMAX DMR in a regular IMAX, it would be the equivalent of watching a letterboxed movie on a giant TV screen. This is a good place to watch IMAX DMR movies since the screen is tall enough to show that stuff. The surround sound was good, although it didn’t have a punch like Inception had.
In fact, I really don’t think “TRON” set any big BO records.I was still in the theatre business at GCC.We never played it.We might have had"ROCKY 3" at that time.I can’t remember.So many movies.
Took forever for a sequel.

Looks like I’m ready to see this movie.
Tickets for the sneak peek of Justin Bieber’s 3D movie have sold out at this and the Paramus theater. Bet there will be lots of screaming moviegoers who will enjoy that kind of thing. It would be cool if Rockaway got ETX like Paramus has. Slimshady, any word on if rockaway will get it? I’m sure I will enjoy it more than Dietmax.
