I hear this was the former JC Penny’s store they put in small screens. Only theatre open showing movies in town. The other Raven theatre is used for live events. It was a former cinema named the Aven

A sad shot, looks like someone got the surrounds from the left side. A bowling type cinema, what did they do for scope?

Thanks CC what a great stage show and a movie in CinemaScope® also. Backstage must have been crowded, they probably played in front of the screen or curtain. Mathis is still playing on stages around the world without a movie.

We visited this little gem in Petaluma CA this past Saturday. Still open with a live music venue but It has so much potential. Clean up and turn into a retro cinema with live shows on the large stage. The place has the most graffito I have ever seen in a old movie theatre but It is more like custom bright color art work and we enjoyed It in places. Thanks to Tom the manager who keeps the place open and was nice enough to let us take some photos. Hope to see the theatre restored some day soon. They don’t have to go first movie run but show some classics now on DCP on a large screen with surround stereo plus live stage shows with different acts. Put semi new seats back in on the main floor. So nice to see this huge former cinema still open and not some little shoe box cinema they have around these days.

Thanks so much Shaun for the photo. This movie theatre still sits intact and ready to open again some day. My friend Jack Tillmany who wrote the SF & Oakland movie theatre photo books was once the manager.

Thanks Riv for the ad. So nice this great cinema tells the public the things It has to offer. I must check out the curved screen. Hope they have curtains also.

Thanks R8 for the nice photo of the Lake Theatre. The owners of CineMark/Century and other lame circuits need to visit this place and get the ball going with some color lights in their theatres. Bright old white lights are so boring.

terrywade commented about State Theater on Nov 19, 2017 at 3:36 pm

They did a semi nice job in the large cinema but they have the pre show white lights so high It ruins the screen image. Bring on some color blue lights like they had before. The other cinemas are way to small for me. At least Cinema West has saved the State for a future generation to enjoy. The new generation has no idea how nice the place was before with curtains and color lights.

Thanks Gran for the great curtain photo. These type of waterfall curtains need to be put in the Castro Theatre in SF.

terrywade commented about Redwood Downtown 20 and XD on Nov 11, 2017 at 8:10 pm

Not the best in theatre screen size. Only screens #8 & #9 are semi large. They turned their #8 into a XD screen and is not much larger then what they had up before and they charge $ more. The sound at all their cinemas here except the XD auditorium is very flat, no deep base not much surround volume. Went to see Murder Orient today in #10 and the seats are placed very close no leg room. When they built this place many years ago they cut back on neon ect. Needed to be a luxury 12 plex with large spaces but they put in very small 20 screens. Won’t be going back to this location in Redwood City. No masking at Century these days a sad place to watch a scope movie on a flat square screen with white showing above and below. Will take a AMC or Regal Theatre any day!.

Thanks Elmo for the ad. This curved UltraVision® screen that ABC Plitt had in many of their cinemas was a great system to watch a film in. We had one in Daly City CA near SF and now It has been torn down for a dumb parking lot.

Thanks Roger for the 35mm booth photo. Must have been a very deep throw to the screen the way the projector is tilted.

Thanks so much David for this photo. I went to the Broadway and Rex Theatre a few times in High School. Oakland tore down so many theatres in the downtown area. At least the Fox Oakland & Paramount are still around, I worked at both of them.

Such a shame they took this nice old neon marquee down when the Henry Fonda now Music Hall theatre took over this spot in Hollywood. It could have been called the Pix Music Hall. Can you imagine in today’s prices the cost to put this neon sign that flashed back. I saw ‘Thank God It’s Friday’ here in 4 CH Mag Stereo. Thanks Paul for the photo.

Wow Mike thanks for the photo. The color must have looked great on the curtain. You won’t find our small shoe box theatres today with such a nice curtain, just a plain old white screen.

Good news thanks to Scott one of the managers at Theatre Delmar the great red waterfall curtains are working again as of Oct 7 2017. We hope Scott like before can also put in a cue for the curtains to close again on the last 10sec of trailers then open again on the main feature. Showmanship is back at Landmark in Santa Cruz! Now let’s go to work on the neon marquee repair project.

Someone in Boulder Creek that has old 8x10 photos or of the outside or inside of the Burl Theatre or ad flyers needs to put them inside the radio station windows or pizza place now inside this former cinema building. Most young people have no idea this still open building with a second floor added was once the local movie theatre for Boulder Creek CA. It does say on the roof Burl Building. Thanks Terry

Thanks David for this great photo. I met John Ashley when I worked at the Fox Oakland Theatre in Oakland Ca during my high school days as loge usher. MR McDougal the Fox West Coast manager had him on stage along with some other stars from one of those AI beach type films that was so popular. The kids loved all the stars being live in person. Nothing like this today as most cinemas have no stage, no curtains and no showmanship!

Thanks John for the new photo. Glad they saved this cinema and kept the main theatre plus added more cinemas on the side. The only thing they forgot to put in was some color lights inside like the old large theatre had. Just boring white lights, no curtains in the main grand auditorium like It had before and a flat screen. I think this new movie cinema addition to downtown Woodland will bring people back downtown. Now ‘Cinema West’ can add some color led bulbs on the side walls when they start making some candy counter money now that that the long remodel is finished.

Thanks Aeterna for this great photo. Someone must have in their neon collection the TODD-AO neon sign from the marquee I hope from this old roadshow 70mm cinema or was It just dumped in the dumpster?

terrywade commented about Street view of new marquee on Sep 10, 2017 at 9:10 am

So nice they kept the large theatre and added on smaller cinemas next door. Now lets get them to put in some color lights and curtains in the large original State Theatre space like It had in the past. Bring some showmanship back to downtown Woodland.

Thanks for the info. I wonder If this new cinema will just be small screens like so many new ones recently in NYC or will they have a few larger screens and seating? We will have to wait and see.

terrywade commented about Berkeley, CA - Plans develop to convert Oaks Theatre into climbing gym on Aug 22, 2017 at 5:29 pm

A sad day for the Oaks Theatre. At least It won’t be torn down like the Laurel Theatre in Oakland was a few months ago. To bad some company did not come thru and turn the space into a live music or classic film cinema. Coming soon a rock climbing gym for people that don’t want to get cold, hot or wet doing it outside with real rock walls. I hope they don’t trash the inside and keep some of the deco part of the cinema. Keep the screen and show videos of every movie that has a rock climbing part to It. These rock gym people may get into It. Thanks for keeping the neon marquee for now.

Thanks CC for this ad. So long to Jerry Lewis this week. They both had some great movies in Paramounts VistaVision® Was too young to see them in person at the Fox Theatre in San Francisco in the early the 50’s on stage. The kids loved them!!!!!

terrywade commented about Cine 7 Theatre on Aug 17, 2017 at 9:52 pm

So sad this great little Laurel Theatre has been taken down. This was my neighborhood theatre as a kid along with the Fairfax in Oakland. Golden State Theatres/United California Theatres ran some great kid shows with KARTOONASCOPE. The Laurel was a church the last few years. I missed going over and taking some photos on It’s last days. They always had nice curtains and blue lights on them. UA wanted more cash with the art films and changed the name to Cine 7. The local Catholic church St Laurence O' Tools sent out notes to protest the change I remember. They brought back reg films after a few months. The city of Oakland could care less about these old classic movie buildings that could have re born as a new entertainment place.
