Yes, it was, but they ran it in late 1982,or early 83, it was cold and snowy, I saw it there, uncut full edition. I was suprised that a theatre in consertive GR would play it. And it played about 3 weeks. I worked in a theatre in Hollywood in 1981 that ran Caligula exclusive for over a year. it opened in the fall of 1980. It also ran in Kalamazoo uncut full edition at the Campus theatre. midnight show 1000 seats all shows sold out. they kept it for 3 or 4 weekends.
I attended this drive in back in 1984 and saw Beverly Hills Cop and Nightmare On Elm St. long, dark drive into the parking area, up on top of a hill surrounded by huge trees. Beautiful spot for a drive in.
They ran pictures in the 70’s, grindhouse type, was a dance bar in the 90s, I was there once in 1991. Quite large auditorium, good slant to the floor, decent sized stage screen area, could of had a good big wide screen… Deco flavor thru the building, in 91, li looked in pretty good shape, but there is no parking, a tiny lot next to building good for about 5 cars, neighborhood has gown down, when I lived in GR, it was a rough black neighborhood, but the Mexicans have moved into this area now….. im sure its still full of crime, it looks very dirty, dangerous, and seedy near this area, Divison and Burton.
If more people said NO to their kids, it would force concession prices to come down .
Something to think about the next time you lay out 45.00 $ at the box office, then get dragged to the concession stand by your kids. Talk to them before you ever get to the theatre, explain to them, and tell them NO.
After it cost more to get a SMALL Coke, than it did to get in to see the movie, I quit theatre concessions. Stick a Coke in your pocket or purse,, candy at the gas station stuff moms purse with goodies from home…..Who can afford this over pricing? You try to do something fun for your family, but it puts you in the red for the rest of the month. Movie and no concessions, or simply, just no movie at all. I have worked in theatres and know how they run, it will hurt at first, but if they lower prices, I would buy again.
Rave sucks !! plain and simple……I have been twice, once was enough, top down masking for scope pictures, make you believe its a big screen, until the movie starts, then half of the screen disappears. I hate Rave, and Im not the only one who feels that way. Terrible management, poor projectionists who dont know how to run a projector, over the top hi pricing,at concession and box office, I could go on and on…..You will be sorry for letting Rave into your town !!!! There is NOTHING to Rave about, except the negative. I have nothing good to say about them. On a scale of 1-10, I give Rave a negative 7.
Cinema 5 reopened approx 2003, privately run family theatre, they put new seating in, screens, and stereo!, something that the theatre never had. Cheaper prices on admission and concession. A good place for enjoyable lower priced entertainment. Small theatres and small screens, but top notch presentation.I attend at least twice a week. They dont seem to have the talky teenagers and phones ringing thru the film, They also try to show some independent films as well,I saw Frozen River and The Queen before it was at other theatres, and before the Academy Awards.
Opened in 1976 Eastowne 5 Theatres were a Jack Loeks theatre, as the Plaza 2 also in Kalamazoo, at the time the largest ( by screen count, not seats) theatre in town .
When I come to the movie capitol of the world, I expect to see a movie in a real movie palace, preferably on Hollywood Blvd., or one of the old downtown palaces, Orpheum, Los Angeles,Palace, etc.on a real WIDE SCREEN, I attend a drive- in that has a screen 75 X 150. Now thats wide !
I was there a few years back for a special anniversary for the theatre, showing The Misfits. Ill take a good guess and say the seating is approx 400, so the 432 seat count would be correct. Its long and narrow, but I dont think it has 898 seats.

The other SENSURROUND movies to come, Rollercoaster and Midway would play across the street at Maple Hill Mall Cinema I II (General Cinema). Guess the vibrations were a bit much for the old bag, LOL…

Newly built Rave theatres use drop down masking….
