KING OF KINGS also played at the Cameron Village as a reserved seat engagement for it’s Eastern North Carolina premiere on January 26, 1962. Presented in Super Technirama 70mm and 6 Channel Stereophonic Sound.
A fact about this theatre. Carmike Cinemas was bought out by American Multi-Cinemas(AMC Theatres)and who knows when the new changed will take place since this theatre’s days are numbered with the opening of the Silverspot Cinemas at Chapel Hill’s University Mall that opened in October 2015.
The Wynnsong Cinemas is the only Carmike venue between Durham and Chapel Hill. Carmike also has three other cinemas in Raleigh(Blue Ridge 10 & Carmike 15),and in Morrisville(Park Place 16) that may be affected.
So this means Lenoir will not have a first-run movie theater after the Westgate’s closing. Will Carmike Cinemas planning to built another theater in it’s place? Question for Don Carver. E-mail at
TOP GUN was the only 70mm Dolby Stereo presentation in the Carolinas upon it’s general release at Raleigh’s Mission Valley Cinema on May 16,1986. Charlotte, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem were absent from the 70mm presentations of TOP GUN.
They did the same thing in 2007 when they closed the Starlite Drive-In & Flea Market in Durham and turned it into a parking lot for a Wal-Mart Super Center and Auto……I know how you feel Kris….“why”

In it’s earlier days as a single screen movie house it was the reserved seat engagements of “Camelot” along with “The Sound of Music”, “My Fair Lady”, “2001” and the 70mm versions of “Gone With The Wind”, “Doctor Zhivago”,“Patton”,and “Ben Hur”(re-release)

I saw not only “Back to the Future 2” here but also “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” in 1989…but the Center’s showing of “Boyz In The Hood” and “New Jack City” brought in capacity crowds in 1991…. Nobody knows that a time capsule was placed there for 2016….
November 24,1966 was the year this theatre opened replacing the Downtown moviehouse that closed….

Previously operated under Consolidated Theatres and later under Schneider-Merl Corporation and Martin Theatres. Martin Theatres closed the COLONY in 1981 when it was a second-run discount house.
From 1983 to the present it became the RIALTO under Harp Theatres from 1983 until 1994 when it was restored and showing independent films and foreign features. Ambassador Entertainment took over operations in 1994 under owner Bill Peebles.
The RIALTO at Five Points opened on October 7, 1983 under new management with the grand opening feature TENDER MERCIES starring Robert Duvall.
There was also another Northgate Theatre in Durham, North Carolina as well that is also listed on the Cinema Treasures site,but it is listed as the Northgate Twin Theatres. That theater opened on Christmas Day 1962 with Doris Day and Stephen Boyd in “Jumbo” that had a seating capacity of 750. It was twinned on June 17, 1975 and closed in 1986. I do have the opening ads for the Northgate Theatre’s grand opening in Durham from Christmas Day 1962. Contact me at
Not to mention live theater productions and live music events too…it will have a restaurant and lounge bar added to the cinema. The cinema will have a mixture of first-run features, independent films, and other productions not to mention showing classic films.
Shagndj: For your information there was NEVER a Jerry Lewis Cinema located in Siler City, NC. The only operating movie theater at that time was the Siler City Drive-In right off Highway 64.

VARSITY THEATRE opening November 9, 1941 with 505 seats. Closed in the early-1970’s when it became the STUDIO 1 cinema with 493 seats.
