So in a city of 250,000 people which already has 3 or 4 multiplexes would it be wise to maybe expand from JUST 2nd run films to maybe 2nd run films PLUS the documentary/foreign films just to shake things up once in a while? It seems that relying only on 2nd run films at a discount price kind of limits your income potential….
I saw it in 1977 in theatres with my dad, uncle and cousin….I was pretty young and fell asleep when R2D2 and C3PO were walking through the sand dunes. I decided to rent it a couple of years ago and give it another shot…well I fell asleep more or less in the same part. I believe you’re thinking about Cellulose nitrate film and no, since it is no longer in production, you are no longer required to be a trained firefighter or Navy Seal to work with it. If you look at old projection rooms, you will notice the steel doors, concrete walls and fire shutters…that’s because of the fire hazard due to the film. Same with the old film reels….they are solid cases to prevent them from catching fire if the film starts to burn.
Good ideas and thank you for the input. Seeing as how the curtain is red as well as the carpet, probably something neutral like your suggestions is a good idea. We’re working on a new website and re-vamp so when we’re ready we’ll add photos, location and history!

Would the idea of a concession cart be a feasible venture for a 350 seat theatre for certain shows, or are concession carts best left to the airline industry?
True……but….there’s still a huge mortgage on the property. From what I read, he’s BEHIND on payments of an existing mortgage that is in the millions. So my concern would be how is the owner expecting to pay down the remaining mortgage once he pays off the amount that he is behind if the theatre doesn’t turn a profit?

Also, I am wondering if I could partner up with a non-profit society and let them have free run of the theatre (except the concession) for a fund raiser by raising money with ticket sales. Of course I would get the P.R. and all concession sales, but they would ensure the house is packed for their fund raiser…I’d make the money off the food sales so it’d be a win-win for both. I think…

As for an update, I am still waiting for the last 3 years financial statements. Land and building alone is worth what we agreed on in terms of price…so the ‘business’ is a bonus, plus, it’ll be a really fun operation to take on!
About matinees- what sort of promotions would be customer generating yet profit making? I look at a lot of major companies who offer 2 for 1 deals and buy one at regular price-get a second for half price and think….hmmmmm….could something like this work in a privat theatre? Like if I want to attract moms and kids (or dads) to an afternoon matinee is it feasible to have something like the kid gets in free with a paying adult, or the parent buys a popcorn and the kid gets one for free? Where is the profit to be made in theatre operation? Is it in concession sales, or ticket sales, or both?
Regarding ‘retro candy’….I can imagine the nickel and dime stores of the 50’s and so on…is that the kind of thing you are thinking? Are there suppliers out there who carry the types of products you are thinking? Thanks again
Thanks for your comments so far. The theatre is located near a major grocery store and in a neighbourhood that caters to a younger ‘rental’ crowd…kind of like a village in a medium size city. The lobby is fairly tight for space, but there is an outdoor area that is still on the property (under the marquee and near the ticketbooth). As for the theatre on this site, no, not yet. Family matinees is a good idea as there are quite a few single parents in the area. Senior movies is a good idea too…especially if one could network with the retirement homes.
This may be a stupid question, but what is a ‘film festival’? I’ve been told that film festivals are a lot of work to organize, but can really pay off.
