To update everyone on some things. The 41 Outdoor as it was called when it opened on July 1, 1948 was the second drive-in theater to open in the state of WI after the Bluemound opened on June 18, 1940. It became the 41 Twin upon opening for the season in 1949. Even after two additional screens went up in 1981, the name stayed the same with only slight variations over the years like, The Giant 41 Twin (Outdoor) etc. The 41 Twin was NOT the first drive-in in Milwaukee or WI to use in-car heaters. That distinction goes to the Starlite Outdoor in Menomonee Falls, WI back in September of 1955 shortly after that drive-in had it’s grand opening on September 2, 1955. The 41 Twin didn’t have in-car heaters until December 25, 1963. Lost Memory posted a link to my website showing the historical marker that I helped get through the Milwaukee County Historical Society as well as original newspaper ads for all WI drive-ins. Originally the 41 Twin had a car capacity of 1,000 cars on each side of the double sided screen tower. When the 2 outside screens were added in 1981, that brought the total car capacity to around 2,700-2,800 cars. Hence the usual reference to almost 3,000 cars.
And last to answer Ken MC, the article in the Appleton Post Crescent on 9/9/59 was referencing the 41 Outdoor theater that was located in Appleton, WI and not the 41 Twin in Franklin, WI. The 41 Outdoor in Appleton, WI did open on April 30, 1949. Hope this helps answer everyone questions.
In regards to KenRoe about the Bluemound Drive-in. For many years the Bluemound Drive-in was simply known as Drive-in Theater. Or Drive-in Theater – Bluemound Rd. So in the Film Daily Yearbook and other publications such as the Motion Picture Almanacs, listed the Bluemound Drive-in as Drive-in Theater – Milwaukee as it was located “fairly,” close to Milwaukee. And most people back then would have an idea where Milwaukee was but would have no clue as to where Brookfield was. The Bluemound Drive-in was also listed in the early years as Drive-in Theater – Elm Grove also. Same drive-in with both early listings as either Brookfield or Elm Grove. Hope this helps. BTW the last day the Bluemound drive-in showed movies was on September 7, 1981.
In regards to Joe Vogel and the Victory Drive-in. The Victory Drive-in opened on June 13, 1950. It is actually in the town of BUTLER, WI but always got credited to either Brookfield or Menomonie Falls, WI which are both incorrect. It was always called the Victory Drive-in from day one. Brookfield did not have another drive-in. The 59 Outdoor Theater which opened in 1967 was located on what was Hwy 59 and County A but was condsidered to be in Waukesha, WI. So yes, the Milwaukee Journal made a mistake which they tend to do from time to time when they don’t actually double check things. It is because of the Milwauke Journal that the Bluemound Drive-in was credited with having opened in 1939 which is totally incorrect. June 18, 1940 is the opening date which the Milwaukee Journal could have checked their own newspaper archives to find that date but didn’t. Sorry to tell Bryan but is wrong on a couple of things. The Victory Drive-in did open in 1950 but the large letters that spelled Victory on the top of the screen did not appear until at least the late 1950’s.
The theater did NOT close after the 1980 season but closed after the 1986 season. Then it was torn down a very short time afterwards. A church did buy the property but as of summer of 2005, there is NOTHING on the site except a few remnant car ramps. Check out my website below for more info.

The Starlite opened in 1955 and was BUILT by Marcus Theaters who owned and operated the drive-in the entire time of it’s existance.
The Bluemound Drive-in theater was the first drive-in in the state of Wisconsin but did NOT open in 1939. It had its grand opening on June 18, 1940!!
