This theater is always a teat to attend, not the most comfortable. but the friendliness of the staff makes up for it.

Very fair prices for admission and snacks, the theater is always clean and the projection focused and sound adjusted to a comfortable level.

Being so close to the Regal 18, this theater is not a first run house but it is worth visiting. Stoogefest, Hitchcock, late night movies are all appearing here and this theater is carving a nice niche for itself. I wish they would start some theme showings, Western Sundays, John Wayne films or Foreign Film Sundays, etc., for afternoon showings. The closest theater to show foreign films is 20+ miles away.

My one and only compaint is the using of DVDs for some specialty showings. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Stoogefest (actually used DVDs that can be purchased at FYE). I expect better quality from a movie house than what I receive at home.

When they are showing films, this theater can’t be beat. Quality theater with quality staff.

“The Palace’s sky blue ceiling with its indirect neon cove lighting are reminiscent of an atmospheric ceiling, but the Palace is not an atmospheric theatre.” Will check this out when I visit Hamburg NY this summer.

Jay also told me that plans are in the works to have the marquee restored. And I wonder if Jay is continuing to show Hitchcock movies each month? I didn’t think to ask him.

I recently received a phone call from the current owner, Jay Ruof. He is hoping to learn the name of the architect for this theatre. If anyone can provide that information, please let me know.

I wonder if this theatre is still showing monthly Hitchcock classics? I’ve been told ordering classic movies in today’s world can be expensive due to shipping costs. I tried the theatre phone number (716-649-2295), but wasn’t able to leave a message though did hear what is being featured for the coming week!

Lost: Thanks for the 3 photos from American Classic Images, but I wonder if this theatre had a set of original doors before the modern ones were installed. My guess is…yes. I hope to contact the current new owner, Jay Ruof.

I didn’t think so, but perhaps “LOUB” can tell us.

LOUB: Thanks for the historical information as it’s been awhile since anyone entered a post on this one. I’ve not been to a movie, but have “toured” the lobby.

Patsy: Probably an oversight that the Genesee isn’t listed, possibly for a lack of information. It was already closed when I moved to the area and demolished shortly thereafter. That’s the correct spelling for it too. I believe there’s a picture and perhaps a little information about it on the Buffalo Architectural history site. Whether or not anything other than the chandelier was salvaged before demolition I can’t say. I don’t know what condition the building was in at that time.

The former Buffalo Genesee Theatre isn’t listed on CT…only one by that name is in Illinois. Are we spelling the name correctly?

Sam_e: Thanks for this update on the Riviera chandeliers as I’ll be there next Wednesday night for the May organ recital!

The chandelier in the Riviera is reported as having come from the (now demolished) Genesee theatre in Buffalo and not the Bailey. Another chandelier in the entrance foyer came from the old Park Lane restaurant on Gates Circle.

Have a good time in western N.Y. If you get to Batavia check out the Mancusso (sp?). Dipson sold it to a church a few years ago for big bucks. The church left pretty much everything intact and it’s lovely. Probably best to go on Sunday though, so you’ll be able to get inside.

Richard G: I will be going to the Riviera Theatre next Wednesday night for their monthly organ recital and will ask about the chandelier and whether it came from the Bailey Theatre in Buffalo!

Patsy
Patsy on December 14, 2004 at 5:44 pm

Ok, I will try to get a chandelier verification for you! Is the Bailey Theatre listed on this site? I’ve seen several Buffalo theatres listed that have been closed and demolished so only a handful still exist, I guess.

Ah, now I remember were my comment for the Grand went, it’s under the Palace. Patsy, sorry for the confusion. When you’re at the Riveria, please try to verify that the chandelier came from the Bailey theatre in Buffalo. The man who owned the theatre in the late 1970’s informed me this is where it came from although I’ve heard many other rumors.

Richard G: This is where I read your ‘Grand’ post which talks about your tour of the theatre which does interest me!
