More 1960 movies at the Forest Hills,“THE BURNING HILLS” and “BACK TO GOD’S COUNTRY”
Now playing Sept.17 1960 “IT HAPPENED TO JANE” and “APACHE TERRITORY” they had a game called Play Lucky.10 sure winners,big cash jack pot and Horse shoe jackpot.
“TRUE GRIT,having opened at the IMPERIAL,then to Daniel Village theatre over to the first outdoor showing at the Weis Drive-in ends its first run status at FOREST HILLS.
Next time "TRUE GRIT” hit town it was a second feature.Seems at first “TRUE GRIT” was given the “M” RATING then released as a “G” rated flick.Unless a little violence was trimmed,it should have stayed a “M” rating.
I forgot I had seen them.
Go up to JOE VOGEL post you can see this DRIVE-in from a old BOXOFFICE MAG. It was great seeing it since i tried to remember what it looked like.

I snuck on the lot one night only to get chased off by the PROJECTIONIST. I just remembered this while reading 20th CENTURY FOX DRIVE IN story on CT.
The Very adult movie was"FANNY HILL" i never did see any thing at the age of 12 or 13. Didn’t have time.

Midnight Cowboy plays at the ForestHills Drive in and it is rated X. one of the last movies to play there.

IT closed in summer of 1970 with MASH. Gone. IT was a shopping center in 1975. Today, the shopping center is a dump and the DRIVE-IN would have looked better.

In 1967 the Forest hills was playing two horror movies that probably could not be found anywhere today. THEY CAME FROM BEYOND SPACE and second feature is THE TERRORNAUTS. Admission is $1.00 Kids under 12 free. Lot of nightmares.

RAY , GREAT STORY, But, remember, THE BON AIR DRIVE IN WAS on the SPOT SKYCITY was located on , on top of the hill. Last time i looked you could still see the Base of the Bon Air Drive in Screen.
Forest Hills was on the bottom of the hill. MAN WHAT GREAT HISTORY ON OUR DRIVE-INS. I wish some of these other old theatre dawgs like you and me would get on CT and add to our theatre History. This truly a treasure I had never HEARD. And I thought I had heard about everything,
For the record Forest Hills was run by Georgia Theatres.And I am sure Real estate was the main reason for the sale.Like so many Drive-ins.
We had a small Investment with a Copany named IDS. The Augusta Ga. Manager (I don’t remember his name) had come by to see us at our Music Store , Bandstand Music on Old Savannah Rd, Augusta..I.was in the middle of building in our Southside Cinema at the time. He told us an amazing story about how he actually bought the Forest Hills Drive-In Theatre.
He sai in the year approx1957=58 he was stationed at Fort Gordon. He and his wife and kids would go to the Forest Hills often to see Movies. One night he went alone because his Wife and kids went to see his Wife’s Parents out of Town. At Intermission he went to the Concession Stand and it was really packed. He was standing in line near the Counter and commented to the wprkers “looks like you could use a hand”. The Manager said yes if you could help boxing Popcorn etc it would really help. Before he left that night he was hired by the Manager for Concession work. He was soon out of the Army and continued to work there. Then the Manager said he had gotten permission from the owners to hire an Asst Manager, So in that position he did fine.It had only been about 6 months earlier that he had been hired and now he is Asst Manager. Then a few months later the Manager said he was going on Vacation. So he Managed the Drive-In for a few weeks. The Manager returned as was real happy with things. Then some months later the Manager informed that he was movinh away and had told the owners the new Asst would make a good Manager. All this took place in a little over a year. The Mgr persauded him to be Manager. So now he was Manager. Things went along fine and within a year the owners paid him a visit. He had never really meet the Owner. The Owner(s) said they wanted to sell the Drive-In.
They asked if he wanted it. He said he couldn’t afford it,.However they made him a very good offer with Down payment and payments. So now he was the new owner.
He said he and his Wife were really going to work hard being they were working for (themselves).He sad his wife and kids would go out on Highway sides and pick Blueberrys , take them home and make pies and also cakes and sell them by the slice. Also he would get young Boys to churn homemade Ice Cream in about 20+ Churns in front of the Concession Stand by letting the Boys Family in free.
They really were making good money he said.About a year later he said some Inveastors calleed on him and wanted to buy the whole thing, really after the Land.
He said had noticed how Television was affecting the market and decided to sell.
He said he would not tell us how much $ he sold it for but he had done very well. So from 3-4 years after helping in Concession he had bought and sold the Forrest Hills Drive-In Theatre. I think this is a great and True Story,The Location is where Sky City was built on Wrightsboro Rd.Augusta, Ga.

Jayne Mansfield in THE GIRL CAN’T HELP IT and second film WILD FOR KICKS with David Farrar and i can’t believe it could it be the same actor? CHRISTOPHER LEE is listedi in the ad. You will see SIN CELLARS in this second feature. I just wonder if they had the TWIST contest after JFK was killed?

July 22 1969 Now showing EYE OF THE CAT and second feature is probably the better of the two, Mia Farrow and Robert Mitchum in SECRET CEREMONY. Rated M.
One of the last films to play at that Great Augusta Drive in was July 28 1969 007 double feature GOLDFINGER and DR.No.

Forest Hills should have only one “r” in it. An article about the Forest Hills Drive-In appeared in Boxoffice Magazine of September 5, 1953. Several small photographs were included.
