Interesting bit of information. Shelby NC was also the State Capitol for a period of time.

Chuck: Thanks. I was at the Carolina years back, but wasn’t able to see that interior.

markp: I stand with you and your comments regarding this theatre that now only stands in Aurora as a reminder of what took place there. I do not like seeing theatres torn down (especially old ones), but in this case I think it is best. My thoughts and prayers remain with the families effected by this terrible tragedy. It is very sad to realize that such violence has now unfolded in a movie theatre.

CSWalczak: A wonderful photo! Is this theatre still standing?

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims of this senseless crime.

This is a remarkable looking theatre with those vintage doors!

Enjoyed seeing a photo of this former theatre location in downtown WPB! When I lived in that area I recall going to the Paramount Theatre though it is no longer there either.

When I saw the photo with the great marquee it made me smile then I read….“I am not certain of the date it closed, but I believe that like the rest of Market Street, it fell victim to nearby malls. The once thriving Market Street is now a shadow of its former self. The building is now used as an electrical supply warehouse.”

We all grew up with the great TV cowboys. I even have a vintage black Hoppalong Cassidy cowgirl skirt with white fringe and my husband has the HC watch.

The Wurlitzer factory was in North Tonawanda NY (suburb of Buffalo).

Always enjoy reading about this DeAngelis designed theatre and seeing its original art deco interior which is so much like my former theatre, the Grand Theatre in Westfield NY. I hope to visit this theatre this summer.

This closed theatre was briefly featured on InSession during the Jerry Sandusky trial. One of the reporters stood in front of the theatre by the doors and mentioned its history to the town.

I made the trip to Canandaigua and I can confirm that this theatre is no longer off Main Street in that quaint and charming lake community. I did learn there is a performing arts center though I didn’t see it.

And the description should be changed from “closed” to “demolished”.

Joe: Thanks for adding this theatre to CT. I read the Winship article and hope to meet Michael while I’m in Canandaigua on Thursday.

I plan to travel to Canandaigua on Thursday to see the town and where The Playhouse once stood.

I love the vitrolite that is still on the art deco exterior of this theatre!

Mike: Thanks…looking forward to seeing an early photo. Many times the current business still has artifacts from when it was a theatre such as the projection room “windows” and slanted floor, etc. Have friends in Enid (Sue and Ken Reeves).

The photo shows an open piece of land with no building so has it been demolished? Mike’s comment reads “the front of the building today has been completely covered with a facade.”

Jim: Thanks so very much for your detailed report. I only hope that the new owner restores the building! I have walked through many theatres and a good companion is a good working flashlight and a good tour guide. Thanks again!

Thank you so much. Glad to hear the roof work is complete and that you will soon start on the front of the building. Was the Dattola designed by Michael DeAngelis as I see the familiar round circle designs on the exterior?
