Jes! this fantastic site never ceases to amaze me. I was on a trip to NY recently and happened to have my camera with me and took 3 or 4 photos of the exterior of this theatre. The amazing thing is that in the 18yrs of visiting NY i always wondered what this theatre/cinema was. I thought id take a few pics and send them here. Low and behold i log on a few days ago and there she is!!! I had no idea as most people would have any idea what a fantastic palace lay behind such a sad and decrepid exterior. I will read with great enthusiasm as to what its future will hold. Does times Sq need yet another office block?

Wonderful, brilliant stuff- thanks and long may it get bigger and stronger-ive pasted the site on to so many friends who find it as fascinating as i do. Thanks again guys!!
Do’s anyone know if there is a similar site for actual theatres as in old performing arts buildings. I know of seperate ones but it would be great to find one such as this – ‘Theatre Treasures’ -mmm!

Ive just seen the Julie Christie ‘Away From Her’ in theatre 4. Its not my first visit and wont be my last. The auditoriums are of a decent size and the presentation is great and very art housey. The staff are all very polite and helpful. If you dont know exactly where it is in the shopping centre it can be a bit of a hurdle race to get to it! My only gripe is why the screens are so small on such a large space of wall behind them. The already great presentation would be made even better with larger screens also they are high up too. Dont let any of this put you off cos they show brilliant movies in a briliant set up. Theatre 4 had 113 seats but it felt bigger.

I get what your saying but i guess its just the way advertising is going these days. On the other hand both shows get massive media coverage on taxies, tubes, metros, press -everywhere you look people are reminder that ‘Mary Poppins’ is at the New Amsterdam. What a shame that when they get there they dont see how magnificent the theatre is outside.

AdoraKiaOra commented about Screens 2 - 5 Odeon Leicester Square on May 24, 2007 at 8:12 am

Very boxy cinemas and as stated above they do have that screening room feel about them which is rather nice. Never very busy as they tend to stretch out first run movies here way after the masses have seen them. Sat here many times with just me in the room. Way better than the awful Panton Street Odeon complex. Since Ken mentioned the Odeon Wardour Street back in March ‘05 they have now closed for good, the entire block is being demolished and a new hotel built. I cant decide which was worse Panton St or Wardour St- OK -both!

Great to see the renovation at the Barbican. It really needed it as it had started to look terribly tired in the last few years and i wondered if it was in its last days. The programe and the programe presentation here is first class, well worth a visit.

Ive just answered my own question above by looking at the Google map. For 20 odd years every time i travel thru Newport by train i have always looked out for the Odeon on the left side as the train approaches Newport. It was only a few days ago i was sitting on the other side of the train and noticed this huge silver roofed building. Very obviously a cinema or bingo hall. It looks amazing on the inside with its very rare example of under balcony projection booth. It looks a large size auditorium. Does anyone have any exterior photos? Its great to see that the Odeon has a new life. Its been rather depressing the last many, many years seeing it sitting there getting more and more derelict and weather beaten. Bravo Newport, another palace saved for our enjoyment.

Is this the large metal roofed building that can be seen on the left hand side of the train as it leaves Newport going towards London??? About 300/500 yards from the train track!

When i stood in the auditorium the stage curtain was up and the stage was very shallow indeed. Theres no way it could hold major musicals etc. I guess its just luck its still standing and in such good condition playing the concerts it does. As i mention now the condition its in i just took a look at the official Paramount website and the photos of the auditorium show that work has been done on the auditorium very recently. It does look strange tho as you look down the street and if you know that theres a theatre theres no fly house!

When in Denver last year i walked to the Paramount and found it a very beautiful building stretching a good way down the street, quit impressive tho i found it strange not to see a fly house at the stage area. The theatre was open as there was a concert of something there that night, i approached a young girl who was cleaning the foyer area. I asked if i could possibly take a quick look at the auditorium. After i told i used to work in the cinema industry she walked me in. A very long and narrow auditorium leading up to a not too exciting prosenium arch. Reminded me a little of the Waner Grand in San pedro L.A.The decor was in very good condition. The girl told me that Denver was very proud of the Paramount and in the future a large amount of money was due to be spent on renovation.

Ive seen a few of the broadway musicals presented here in the last few years- ‘Evil Dead-The Musical’, ‘Mimi La Duck’ and ‘The Great American Trailer Park Musical’. Ive sat in 2 or 3 of the different 5 theatres and i must say they are all great auditoriums with great accustics and sightlines. Very spacious modern foyer spaces. I imagine they would have been great for showing movies. For now, it seems that the live theatre programming is working OK for Dodgers Stages. Dont ever be afraid to visit.

Ive seen a number of different shows here over the years and it realy is a spectacular theatre. You get a true sense of occasion sitting in that auditorium. Its one of the rare examples of a mezzanine level sitting deep under the main balcony level. The Oriental in Chicago has a simular set up but is just 2 or 3 rows deep and private boxes where as the States is 8 rows and is a full size cirlce level- has to be seen in the flesgh to take it in. Click on the web site above and take the different virtual tours. I love this great theatre.

No change in 25 years then! I WILL ask why you went to see ‘We Will Rock You’ because im still asking myself the same question 2 years after i saw it in Barcelona!
It would be nice to watch a good movie in 70mm at the Dominion instead of ‘Mice-The Musical"! Haha!
The Dominion has never had a fantastic reputation as a musical theatre house- most Broadway and West End shows that have played there disappear rather quickly (except, unfortunatly 'We Will Rock You’)– but like i said at least its still there thank god!

AdoraKiaOra commented about Dominion Theatre on May 4, 2007 at 8:47 am

I worked at the Dominion in the mid 80s for 2 years. During this time a number of movies were shown such as the premier of ‘Return Of The Jedi’ and others. A very succuessful presentation over a space of 3 or 4 seasons was the ‘Thames Silents’. These were screenings of famous silent movies with stars such as Charlie Chalin, Rudolph Valentino and Lillian Gish amongst others. Presented by Thames Television they were accompanied by a full orchestra who played specialy commisioned “sountracks' for these great movies with an orchestra of about 40 or 50- amazing to experience this in the Dominions surroundings.. Every performance was old out and was attended by a very high brow audience worthy of Covent garden. I remember the chief electrican at the time found it increasingly difficult to screen movies from the original projection rooms. When the Dominion held the premier run of ‘Jedi’ it was decided to install a tempary projection box under the circle in the middle of the stalls. This prevented at least the last 10 rows in the stalls to be sold and also the frst 10 rows due to the hight of the screen. Ray, the projectionist said then that it was a shame money wasnt spent on restoring the original projection box to show movies properly. During my time there they held a season of 70mm presentations of movie musicals. These included ‘Fiddler On The Roof’, ‘South Pacific’, ‘The Sound Of Music’, ‘Calamity Jane’ and i think also ‘The King And I’. They were show with just the circle area for sale. Even then with a great promotion of the season i remember every night there not being more than 20 to 30 people there. There were many complaints regarding the bad screening presentation- focus, sound etc. The way the Dominion is handled now i can say almost definately that it will never show a movie again. But hey, its still there and looking fantastic.
