Hi Peter,
I completely forgot about the headaches the studio “restrictions” cause you theater owners and managers these days regarding their “new product”. My suggestion for those great old serials came strictly from the perspective of the “little kid” in me sitting there in the audience during a Saturday morning kiddee matinee.
Never realized 35 mm prints of those serials were that hard to find. (judging from the amount of “bootlegs” available on the internet – but I guess those must be dupes of old VHS prints from companies such as Nostalgia Merchant.)
Not to put too fine a point on this… but, as a fan of Big Screen Classics, I certainly would not mind showing up 30min. earlier if BSC were to expand its programming to include the occasional serial or pre-show cartoons. (But that’s the “little kid” sitting in the front row talking right now !)

Yes, and I remember loudly declaring “WHAT??? OH COME ON…” at the end of the last chapter when we were presented with the preposterous ending and solution that we sat 13 weeks through… It was a disappointment, and quite funny, to say the least. At least others sitting near me though it was funny!
You’re correct, mbd. After (over) 300 movies and 9 years, my memory is clouded…to say the least. So that means we ran two serials. :)
I remember seeing The Crimson Ghost before each Big Screen Classic a few years ago. I even remember a large poster for it in of the lobby poster cases.
The serial we ran was “Dangers of the Canadian Mounted”, which was fun. Couple of problems with trying that again is that there are very few 35mm prints around (DotCM was a collector’s print) from the studios – Sony/Columbia has a few, but that’s it. Another issue was the running time being added to the show made our normal first-run schedule very tight – a lot tighter than the studios normally allow, which caused more than a few problems with them.

Have you and Nelson ever considered (I think you might have done this a couple of seasons ago – was it “The Crimson Ghost” ?) bringing back the serials (from Republic or Columbia, to name a few) to start off each Saturday’s “Big Screen Classics”? I’d really love to see Captain Marvel, Captain America, or Radar Men From The Moon.

Yes, it’s a short walk (under 10 mins) from the Suffern train station to the theatre. You’ll take the train from Penn in NY to Secaucus Junction and switch trains. Go to www.njtransit.org and put Penn in as starting point and Suffern Station as end point. The 9:14 from Penn arrives at 10:03, a pretty quick trip.

Can someone help me out? I’ve been up to the Lafayette many times, but no longer have a car. I want to come up for “Cover Girl” this Saturday. How easy is it to take NJ Transit from Penn Station in Manhattan up to the Suffern Station? Can I walk from the station to the theatre?

Tomorrow’s showing of “Shanghai Express” with Marlene Dietrich should be a winner – the 35mm print from Universal is an excellent one and looks great on our silver screen.
“Me and Orson Wells” is available via Streaming Netflix in HD.

I sincerely hope this changes and the folks at Rivertwon decide to return. I realize that attendance at some of the screenings might have been a bit “spotty” but they certainly presented films that might have not initially received a wide distribution and well-deserved recognition.
Films such as “Crazy Heart” (before it became the “darling” of the academy.) and (my personal favorite) “Me And Orson Welles” (which I don’t think has received an “official” dvd release.) might not have been sreened at all had it not been for Rivertown.
Suffern really needs some form of “Art House” program.

Will the Rivertown Film Festival be returning to the Lafayette for Sunday morning screenings ?

Thank you for bringing in “You Only Live Twice”, besides being one of Sir Sean’s last outings as Bond it has probably John Barry’s finest score in the Bond series… very nice tribute to the late maestro. (And a perfect compliment to last season’s screening of “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.”)

Hey Bill! I agree with you! I hope it plays there again, too. The only trouble is, however, that the classics play at 11:30 in the morning, and that would be tough to make the six or seven hour drive.
Thanks for the info, JodarMovieFan. I knew about the 70mm print of West Side Story with the restored original 6-track sound, at our AFI Silver, in Silver Spring, MD. However, I live much too far away from that area to go that far, plus I don’t know anybody that I could’ve stayed with after the film. I’d love to see the restored 70mm screening of West Side Story, but I have a feeling that it won’t play at all in Boston, since no theatre in our area has the equipment for that particular print. If if were to make NYC, however, I’d be game, since NYC is only a four or five hour drive from Boston.
I missed West Side Story here two years ago. Plus, it is the 50th anniversary year. I hope it does play here again.
MPol, if you wanted to see WSS, we had it in glorious 70mm, with the recently discovered original 6-track sound, at out AFI Silver, in Silver Spring, MD last weekend. It was a decent print, even though there were some scratches, and the presentation was excellent. This print will probably make the runs at the better art houses.
I haven’t seen “How the West was Won” in a long, long time. I have to admit that I’m not a big fan of “Ben Hur”, however.
