saps, funny that you say that. I saw Psycho for the first time at the New Amsterdam when it was re-released in ‘64 with Stalag 17. And the guy in front of us must have been in the Empire with you. He was talking to himself, holding a hankerchief over his face, laughing like it was a home movie of his brother and mother. Probably was.

Back in my time, the 50s/60s, the Anco had some cool double bills. If a double feature did well at the Harris, after a week at the New Amsterdam, they would bring it here. Made sense since it was a smaller theater and the booking fees by then were probably close to nil. Other than that, The Anco & Empire had some great programming of re-issues. Usually action, of course. Haven’t found an image of it yet. ANyone know where I can find one? Jerry 42nd Street Memories
Is there any way to retrieve the bookings information on the 42nd Street Theaters, back in the 50s-60s, especially the Empire, Anco, Times Sqaure, Victory, Liberty? I went through the NY Times microfiche at the library and found some mention of the more mainstream New Amsterdam, Lyric, Harris, Selwyn but nothing on the others. Thanks for any info. Most of the old 42nd St movie theaters can currently be seen on a Travel Channel show focusing on Times Square. The clips of the Deuce are during the mid-70s and current timeframes. It was shown on December 26. So it should be still in its rotation.

Bryan,
Great shot. Thanks. Where did you come by it? I’ve been trying to accumulate photos of the Deuce from the 50s – 60s with little luck. Jerry 42nd Street Memories
saps, the thrill of coming up on the subway on 8th avenue, having a hot dog (with mustard relish) and pulpy orange drink, then turning the corner toward the Selwyn is something I will never forget. Your right about the marquees hawking the double/triple features. When were you there? Jerry 42nd Street Memories
TJ, it was a great thrill as a kid, in the 50s-60s, to go up to The Deuce. Since then didn’t advertise, you never knew what goodies you’d find. They had some creative programming before the porno-Kung Fu-slasher onslaught. Each theater pretty much had a niche. The Times Square theater was a haven for the western fan, like me. Jerry 42nd Street Memories
The Selwyn of the 50s-60s usually showed the double features that had previously played at the Lyric. The theater was the first one you approached on the southside of the street going from west to east. It was situated next to the Apollo. The Travel Channel has been playing an hour long program on Times Square this week with shots of the Deuce from the 70s. Jerry 42nd Street Memories
I remember visiting the Lyric quite frequently in the 50s/60s. As Warren stated, it did have the 1st 42nd St showings after a film had a Broadway run, as did the New Amsterdam on the south side. The Lyric, being an old legit theater had 3 levels and seeing a movie from the top level was a trip. You were looking down on the screen through the haze of the rising cigarette smoke. Last week, the Travel Channel was showing a hour program on Times Square. It included shots of the Lyric & Apollo from the 70s. If anyone knows where I can see photos, images, etc of the 42nd Street Theaters in the 50s-60s, please let me know. Jerry 42nd Street Memories

Growing up in Chelsea in the 50s & 60s, we had the great RKO on 23rd & 8th (showing WB, Fox, U-I, Allied Artists, AIP flics) and the Sheridan in the Village showing MGM, Paramount, Columbia, UA flics. I recall that Jerry Lewis would appear at all of the Loews' theaters on the opening of his new film. He’d spend 10 minutes on each stage before moving on to the next. Heart breaking to see the RKO shut down and eventually burn down; then about 9 years later the Sheridan was demolished for little apparent reason.

For those of us living in Manhattan in the late 50s/early 60s, another DI choice was the Route 3 DI outside the Lincoln Tunnel, where the Meadowlands is now. Jerry from 42nd Street Memories
Spent a lot of my puberty years here, in the early 60s. Watching foreign films and an occasional “risque” film like Russ Meyer’s Lorna. Seemed like it was dedicated to all Jean Paul Belmondo at times. Great stuff. Jerry from 42nd Street Memories
Saw my first rock concert here in the early 60s! It was still a great double-feature movie-house but for one night they had The Dave Clark 5 with The Kinks opening! Jerry from 42nd Street Memories

Where can I find images of the outside of the theater…..marquee, box office…etc. Thanks, Jerry
