I dont know the movie but either there were no surrounds in the movie which is possible or there was a problem like you said. If there is a problem, I doubt that there have not been more complaints.
I know all about different fader settings. I install this equipment daily. My point was that you can’t have automatic settings for individual trailers. You can have saved settings for the feature and trailer mode only. As Vito said, every trailer and commercial has a different level. You cannot be at every machine every show and sit there while they run through and babysit the volume. Also as Vito said, the majority want to put on the best show possible. Do you think the managers do? They had no choice but to learn how to thread up and hit the start button. The owners don’t give shit about the customers. It’s all about saving money. The reason presentations are going downhill is because the qualified operators are being replaced by film threaders! That’s a fact.
Hey Movieguy, I dont know what theaters you are going to but if what you said was happening, the union guy would be replaced. To say that the managers do a better job than the union prjectionists is absurd and shows what little you know about it. As far as the loud trailers, that has been a problem for years. Everyone knows about it. If you can show me a processor that can change levels for each trailer I would love to see it.

I really didn’t want to say anything else about this theater, but unfortunately I do have to agree with CConnolly. It’s a miracle that this place had stayed open for so long. It would have done better if some money was put into it. Okay, alot of money. I worked here as a projectionist in the 90’s. Everything in the booth was held together with tape. Some people just don’t understand that you have to spend money to make money. With the 2 decent sized screens, the presentation could have been a lot better. I think it’s just sad that we are losing another theater, no matter how horrible it was.
There was no fire damage to the theater itself. There was very heavy smoke and water damage. Most of the damage came from the firefighters ripping open the ceilings and walls. I understand that they have to do this, but the extent to which they did made no sense. It is highly unlikely that the theater will ever re-open. To repair all the damage would not be cost effective.
That sounds about right. I was 10 in 1980 and I don’t remember the theater there. I do remember the Eldee store about then. I don’t know when the theater closed though. It may have been vacant for a while before the Eldee opened. It has been very hard finding anyone with any info on this theater.
Yes the theater did have fly space. That is what was in the tower you saw. The space is now used for offices. I also went to a party there about 12 years ago. I saw the top of the arch. Another funny thing is that they converted the original 2 carbon arc lamphouses into spot lights which they use now.
Did you see the photos that are hanging in the lobby? They are amazing. There are about 4 or 5 from about the 1930’s to about the 1950’s or so. The roof was entirely replaced at some point.
I wish someone knew what was going on there. The carpet store that was there before the karate store also never opened up. They put in the warehouse and roll up door. It was stocked with carpet for a whole year with no activity in or out. Now with the karate store, it’s the same thing.
I don’t hear any more complaints from people here than I do from larger theaters. On the contrary, people like this theater because of the fact that it is a small well maintained theater. The equipment in the booth is top notch, state of the art stuff. The presentation (sound, picture, etc..) is better than a lot of larger plexes. If you don’t like the place than don’t go. This place is in no danger of closing anytime in my lifetime.
The uptown does indeed have 2 prints. One for the managers and one for the projectionists. Oh, by the way, the managers print no longer will run in Dolby digital because of the damage to it. So if you are going to see a movie there, find out when the projectionists' print is running or else you will only hear it in analog sound. What a surprise!!!
I’m sure it was a misthread. Piddy, if you think the managers are not the ones scratching the prints then think again. Managers have no business in the booth.
Unfortunately, this is what happens when you take the qualified, union operators out of the booth and replace them with managers and concessionists that do not know what they are doing. They do this because they know people will still go to the theater. They will complain, but they will still go. Say goodbye to the perfect presentations. They are a thing of the past.
The theater is about a week behind in reopening. It should be opened the week of the 25th. Major work was done on the lobby, concession and bathrooms. A cafe was put in. A new concession stand and box office was put in. New carpeting and tile was installed. A lot of projection room work was done. New automations and house light controls were installed. Nothing was done to the theaters themselves, though. All the theaters will be completely renovated after the summer including upgraded sound systems and new screens and maskings.
The theater will reopen this coming Friday the 24th. They are not finished yet with the first phase of renovation though. The second phase, which will be a major overhaul of the projection and sound systems, will begin after the summer. Some work was done on the projection already so there will be some improvement to the presentation now.
That’s what I have been saying for years. The problem is that it is all about the money. It will be cheaper to eliminate film and shoot everything with digital. You’re not gaining much with digital other than unscratched films. It’s just cheaper.
While I do agree that parking was a major issue with the Floral, which is by the way my favorite theater of all time, the major problem was that is was a single screen. You can not make it today with a single screen theater. It costs too much money to keep it going. I do agree that quading it would have kept it going (if you had the parking). The problem with quading it is that they would have destroyed the theater. As a service tech for many theater, I have seen the old singles that have been cut up. It’s digusting what they cover up or cut apart to multiplex these places. I went to the Kenmore once in Brooklyn on a call and when they split the downstairs theater into two, they just built new side walls in front of the old walls. There was about a one foot space in between the old and new wall. You could look behind it an still see the old fabric on the walls. Thank god the Floral closed before they butchered it.
Those are only the second version in the last 12 years. They do that on purpose. They like that feel to them. Unfortunately, I can’t get the dam tunes out of my head after hearing them all day.

Thanks for the info. I will check it out and report any news.

I grew up here and I could swear that this is the building that I saw the Eldee sign on. I could be wrong but I dont think I am.

Thankyou Gena2. Everything you said is true, except for the closing part. This theater will be around for a long time.

I called the Karate store today. According to them, they will be opening in 2 months. We will see.

The theater did open on Wednesday the 29th of June. Everything but the cafe is up and running.
