Fairlane-Litchfield Corporation operated several theatres within North Carolina,South Carolina,Georgia,
and several Southeastern states. This was one of those theatres acquired. Fairlane-Litchfield sold most of their screens to United Artists in the mid-to-late 1980’s with the exception of the ones they kept and later sold to other chains(The Omni Cinemas 8 was sold off to Consolidated Theatres by the late-1980’s). Their corporate management began operating and rebuilding their organization and a new company called Litchfield Theatres LTD by going into markets they had not been in by opening newer and flashier multiplexes in Tennessee(
in the metro areas of Nashville,Memphis and Knoxville),the greater Atlanta area, greater Savannah area and other parts of Georgia,Florida and a few other locations including Alabama, and Southeastern Virginia.
In North Carolina,Fairlane-Litchfield operated several theatres throughout the state which some were bought out by United Artists around 1988 and 1989. Originally located with their headquarters in Easley,SC….the main man was Foster McKissack was president of the Litchfield Organization while Ulmer Eady was head of operations…..The operation later on moved to Litchfield’s resort on the South Carolina coast and renamed it “Litchfield By The Sea”.
After the sudden death of President McKissack, all of Litchfield’s screens were bought out by Regal Cinemas who also later on bought out United Artists.
The Omni Cinemas 8 was the only Fairlane-Litchfield theatre chain in Fayetteville and the first in the Cumberland County and surrounding markets before it was taken over by Consolidated Theatres and later by Regal Cinemas before it was later sold to an independent chain.
THE WATER TOWER PLACE CINEMAS opened to the public on April 20,1987 under Charlotte based Multi-Cinemas as Gastonia’s only second-run discount house. It was a four-screen theatre, and later on expanded to ten screens before closing in 2003.
THE LITCHFIELD CINEMAS originally opened to the public on December 10,1982 under Fairlane-Litchfield Theatres.
The premiere attractions for its official grand opening were on Screen 1 “48 Hours”; Screen 2 “The Last Unicorn”; Screen 3 “Airplane II:The Sequel”,and on Screen 4 “An Officer and a Gentlemen”.
By 1988 it was acquired by United Artists Theatres who changed the name to the UA Litchfield Cinemas 4 and it remained that way until it close in 2004.
I have the ads from its grand opening. See me if you need additional information at
OMNI CINEMAS originally opened to the public on July 3,1990 under Fairlane-Litchfield Theatres. Consolidated Theatres took over this theatre in the mid-1990’s and later on Regal Cinemas acquired the operations in 2005 after its acquisition of Consolidated Theatres.
I have in my possession the original newspaper ad from July 3,1990 if anyone is interested in the grand opening of the Omni Cinemas 8. Contact me at this address: Thank you.
I have found the original ad for the opening of this theatre and it did not open in 1985. I will revise this and posted onto the Cinema Treasures site.
At the time of its opening,it replaced the Village Twin Theatres which at the time Carmike turned it into a second-run discount house.
Scott Neff, Mike Rogers, TLSLOEWS, GMNash and Lost Memory on THE LITCHFIELD CINEMA 4:
This theatre opened WAY before 1990. I have found the original ads for this cinema and will be revised once I scan the advertisement for its grand opening. In fact this movie theatre opened sometime during the early 80’s.
NightHawk1 and CZWalczak:
The Sycamore Cinema V was operating as discount house as way back as 1987,and I will do research to find the official year this theatre opened. I’m thinking either late-1986 or mid-1987.
The only theatre that was under Martin Theatres that Carmike bought out was the Valley Twin Theatres off Sycamore Dairy Road that closed in 1990 as a discount movie house.
The Westwood 6,the King Triple, the Bragg, and the Carolina(Downtown),along with the Haymount were the only theatres in Fayetteville that were under Stewart and Everett.
The Bordeaux Cinemas and Eutaw Twin Theatres were owned and operated under Consolidated Theatres and later on were bought out by Carmike Cinemas. The former Cardinal Theatres at Fayetteville Mall were operated under ABC,Plitt, and later Cineplex Odeon before being taken over by Carmike Cinemas in the early-1990’s.
Cross Creek Mall and Cross Pointe were NEVER under Carmike. These two theatres were operated under General Cinema Corporation. Even though they did have strong competition from a huge 12-plex that Carmike Cinemas opened putting these two theatres under General Cinema out of business.
FYI-A Dolby Stereo System was installed in the cinema’s third auditorium in the Spring of 1978 prior to the opening of “Grease” which played here in Dolby Stereo during the summer of 1978. “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” played here in the fall of 1978 as a re-release issue in Dolby. The system was already in place for the Triangle showing of “Alien” which played here on June 22,1979 in Dolby Stereo. It was already up and running in time for the Triangle showing of “The Empire Strikes Back” on June 20,1980 in Dolby Stereo. Also to point out it did show a lot of films with Dolby Stereo presentations…among them “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”, “Purple Rain”, “The Goonies”, “Extreme Prejudice”, “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”.
