LOL ok I will tell the truth, I also saw it at the Cinema Village when I was managing it. I believe it was paired up that time though with “Something for Everyone”. Didnt Myra have a big splashy premiere at the Criterion?
Wednesday December 3, 1958 the State opened a show called “The Jewel Box Revue”, billed as starring the worlds greatest femme (thats the word) impersonators. It was 2 hours and used the words…..Beauty, Music, Spectacle, Laughs. On the screen (and advertised in much smaller print) was The First NY Showing of Victor Mature in “China Doll” a United Artists release.
That trip was actually 5 years ago, so alot can happen in that time. I am planning on flying out next month just to see “This is Cinerama” at the dome. I always wanted to see it and am glad I missed the aborted version shown in the Ziegfeld.
In April of 1958 the Hobart was listed as being an Interboro house. They had a double bill of Glenn Ford in “The Cowboy” and Gary Merrill in “Crash Landing”.
In a 1958 ad Prudential advetised the theatre as The Hollis-Art. They were playing a double feature of “Gates of Paris” and Maria Schell in “So Little Time”.
I attended a double feature here during a trip out to LA and saw Valley of the Dolls and Myra Brekinridge. The place was packed and the audience, including myself was having a ball. Yeah it’s rundown and could use some updating, but it reminds me of all the Greenwich Village theatres we have lost like The Bleecker and The St. Charles.
New York is cut throat with film bookings but California seems worse. Here some complexes manage to co-exist and split product but out there as a theatre opens 2 close. Was this place just average? I took pictures of the outside a few years ago but figured it was just like a mall-plex.
What a slap in the face for all the people that gave of their time for the love of the theatre. I fear in the hands of the city there will be no more classic movie nights.
The Lefferts had a manager who worked here many years named Flo Deane. She tried so hard to keep the place up and running the last six years it was open. She then went on to run the Main Street Cinemas, did anyone know her?
It’s a shame if this goes the way of The Hollywood and becomes an attraction instead of a theatre. By the way what was the name of that complex down the block from the Chinese theatre? It was a small plex, I think it’s closed now but I cant remember the name to look it up on here.
Any chance one screen will be revival>?
It’s open and thriving, I am here almost once a week.
It’s funny those matrons were always overweight and the uniform two sizes too small :)
I remember when Larry Parks died the Ziegfeld revived “The Jolson Story”.

The orchestra part of the theatre has been gone for eons. RKO and then Cineplex were only using the balcony.
Also did you see the way the marquee looked the last two years? One side was all dark and broken. Anyone driving by would think it was a ghetto house.
They should have tried a $3 policy. Is that one single screen house still open that ran double features?

Is the theatre intact at all behind the store?
I have heard many similar stories about Jolson over the years. Fred Astaire will always be remembered as a “class act”.
I remember the comedy and tragedy masks in the Glen Oaks.
Last time I drove by here the place looks like it has not been broken into yet. The front glass was still intact, but how long can that last?
I am coming this weekend to see Spartacus. I would LOVE to see Gone With The Wind or Dr Zhivago here, two of MGM’s best.
Thanks Warren, I send my team trivia questions every morning and wanted to use this as one of them.
No, the Kew Gardens has a different owner.
