New 4DX® cinema going in at the new Regal Stonestown 12 San Francisco CA. So much effects, wind, air, fans, smoke, mist, and seats that shake and move. They need to re do the old movie SAN FRANCISCO or Earthquake in 4DX® Let the new place move!

Thanks to the Syufy family at West Wind Drive In’s for taking over the old Regal Cinema 9 in downtown Santa Cruz. After being closed for a year Regal moved out. Syufy still kept many of their old outdoor theatres under the ‘West Wind’ brand now It seems the two Syufy brothers are getting back into the indoor cinema business back again in Santa Cruz CA after selling their Century Theatres to Cinemark many years ago. Their dad Raymond made a fortune when he sold off many of the drive in land outdoor theatres to build malls with indoor cinemas on the same spot the old drive In’s played films. Lets hope the tourist and college local crowd will support the Syufy ‘West Wind’ Santa Cruz 9 Theatre in downtown Santa Cruz CA. Regal never bothered to even advertise. I think the Syufy family will change things around in Santa Cruz moviegoing for the better!

Thanks Kino I have seen this great showmanship curtain theatre. It’s too bad this is only one of a few like this in the USA today. The curved special screen, curtains with pre show color lights ect you won’t find this at your lame multiplex with maybe one large screen and the rest flat and small square screens with no scope masking. No wonder people stay home and watch TV these days.

Thanks for the image. How nice curtains did look put in the stage screen area of many old cinemas in the 1960’s to make them look more modern. Now all torn down fabric and all.

Kino thanks for the color image. The only thing I would have done as a sound designer was to hide the ceiling surround speakers better like in the dark sections not the lit blue strips. Also the side wall speakers maybe try to hide behind the square light panels? Seems like most cinemas that put in stereo surround many years ago just hang all the speakers out in the open. Very few theatres have them hidden from view so you hear the surround sound but don’t see the speakers. I know there can be a problems with the blocked sound coming from the speaker cones if they are blocked by a fabric or panel but in this day and age you would think some creative sound speaker company can hide the effect speakers in new installs!

Sad news like so many movie theatres the Regal 9 Santa Cruz CA has closed for good. Lets hope some new movie theatre people can move in as Regal has pulled the plug after being closed almost a year! This is a college tourist town so some new circuit will do well when they re open If it remains a movie theatre. Regal in my opinion wrecked the seating a few years ago by putting in huge recliners and taking away too many seats. There are 3 large type spaces inside this now closed downtown Santa Cruz CA Theatre just ripe for a first for Santa Cruz IMAX, Screen X, 4DX or a large curved screen plus food service. The other 6 auditoriums are very small but good for art type movies. The only other cinema in town is run by Landmark the DelMar 3 and The Nick Theatres they play mainly art type fare and are temp closed. Time for Alamo, Maya or CineLux Theatres to take over this prime spot, a great location downtown when movies can open again soon! Please change from open to closed. The front marquee was blown off last year during a wind storm so whoever takes over this former cinema they will have to replace as Regal did nothing about It.

terrywade commented about CineArts at the Empire on Feb 11, 2021 at 3:14 pm

Rumor is in the neighborhood is that It may become a new sports gym like they did the Blumenfeld Alhambra Theatre on Polk St in SF now a fancy gym or the UA Metro Theatre on Union ST another expensive gym built inside a former movie theatre. They kept the neon marquee up outside at both of these former SF movie cinemas. The West Portal area that the Empire Theatre has been for many years has no nice large sports gym and is in a good money area. We hope It still remains a movie theatre in some way!

Lets hope they don’t bulldoze the Empire for more SF condos! May be time for the Vouge/Balboa Theatre group to get involved and save It. Take out the dumpy small twin loge theatres and make the place one large event/movie event space!

terrywade commented about Bay Theatre on Feb 5, 2021 at 9:15 am

Nice that they re opened but please such small square flat screens and very little seats. Probably no masking. It should just have been a 2 or 3 plex with larger curved screens and way more seats. All about food and drinks plus over large sleep chairs. I wonder If someone will take over the old Bay Theatre in town if It’s still around and bring in more seats and a larger screen. The movie people in this town have a ton of money to spend on a nice wide screen movie house not some cramped small five screen set up. The new neon sign does look nice.

How nice at fist when I saw this photo I thought they were tearing down the place. It will be nice when they re build the candy stand and projection booth. You very seldom see this at a old Drive In!

A sad day for Hollywood CA. The former Warner Hollywood Cinerama just sits empty year after year. The owners are not doing anything about re opening this former deluxe roadshow theatre. The city needs to step in and do something about this cinema blight!

terrywade commented about Tower Theatre for the Performing Arts on Jan 30, 2021 at 10:45 am

The Tower Theatre Fresno CA is about to be sold to a church group. The Tower area will suffer as the former cinema and entertainment venue brought in many music events and film festivals. Lets hope they don’t put white paint all over the inside that many churches do when they move into a former movie theater. You can forget the great neon Tower marquee being flashing for any church service two days a week. The church gang say they will still rent out the auditorium but I think they will be picky on what groups they rent to. You won’t find many of the festivals or music/comedy events they did book in the past. The screen inside that has been up the last few years is just small little video set up, they put black masking on the sides. Not a good place these days to see a movie on DCP video. Some people have bigger screens in their homes. I don’t think they have 35mm projectors left in the booth? A sad day for Fresno movie/entertainment lovers!

No mention of 70mm in the ad? I know they did a 35mm scope stereo blow up for this film to 70mm in many markets. Thanks Grind for the clip ad.

terrywade commented about San Pablo Auto Movies on Jan 24, 2021 at 8:24 am

Thanks Johnny for the classic ads. Must have been a rough projectionist shift with all the film reels to change every 20 minutes for the Dusk To Dawn Show. I don’t think they had the 35mm platter system then.

terrywade commented about Theatre 70 on Jan 21, 2021 at 7:12 pm

A wonderful mid size Oakland CA cinema that they very seldom ever played a 70mm film. Now torn out for a Kaiser hospital. I remember It was all decked out in red drapes and seats on the inside with waterfall curtains and had a flat big screen. As most theatres in the area were run by Fox West Coast Theatres® or Blumenfeld that had no 70mm projection this new ‘Theatre 70’ gave them some competition. Thanks 50’s for the 35mm trailer still.
