Sorry Peter, my mistake. The Silver screen is used for 3D not the other one. We have about 4 different screens here for the different material that is shown. Vito, it IS great seeing all those people out the ports. You can here the oooooooo’s and aaaaaaaa’s with the 3D too.
Hey guys,
I actually did the 6 plex split in the 90’s. Here how it went…..upstairs the old balcony is theaters 5 and 6. Downstairs theaters 3 and 4 are the back third of the theater when it was twinned. Now the front 2/3 of the downstairs was turned 90 degrees and is now theaters 1 and 2. Got that? Lol…..
Vito,
They use a plain non perf matte white screen for the 70MM. It looks pretty good even though the light output is not great. You wouldnt think that with the 7K Watt lamps, but thats for another discussion. Lol. I am one of the projectionists there. Also, I am the service tech for the Christmas show run.
Ed,
The “Independent Screening Room” was supposed to be a party room but it got screwed up during construction and became screen #5. The door you see in front is closed off. The exit is next to the box office.
Vito, we are still running the 3D 70MM 2 projector film. It has nothing to do with the new LED wall though. We actually use all 5 projectors during the show at one point or another. The show is pretty good even though they shortened it again this year. As far as the LED screen goes, it does function well though a lot of stage scenery has been taken out because of it. So it depends how you look at it. The screen adds to the show but personally I would like to still see all the old sets on stage that have been abolished by the new screen. Just my thoughts.
Clearview bought the GG theaters. Mr GG was an actual person. Everone today splits up theaters to get the most films they can in at once. Some films stay for a long period of time and get moved into the smaller 50 or 60 seats theaters. Thats all thats needed for those films at that time.
That was a great story Lin. I love hearing things like that. Now as far as the private screening room is concerned. I never thought of it as a private screening room, but I guess you really could call it that. It was actually a room for the projectionist to sit a monitor the film. It wasnt big enough to hold 15 people though. Maybe a bit less. Most theaters did have this room way back when. The room is still there, sort of. The wall was taken down to expand the booth. Believe it or not, the speaker is still on the wall. As far as stereo sound goes, it has started to be upgraded. Two of the screens, 2 and 5, have front/surround stereo. The other 3 will be upgraded to full dolby stereo in the next few months.
Static is caused by the air being too dry not too humid. Thats why booth installed humidifiers in the winter to try and help this problem. This has not been an issue much anyway since they improved the polyester film stock. With a single screen theater, a projectionist definitely CAN help with a print if there is a static issue.
It definitely is because of the union busting tactics. These problems would not be happening if trained professionals were in the booth. AMC doesnt care. They give a pass for another show and people come back and buy more popcorn. Eventually it will catch up to them. Less and less people will go to the Uptown. BTW, heat and humidity will not cause the film to warp…………..unless you’re putting it in an oven and baking it.
Yes, the Greenport has undergone huge renovations. The seat are not new. They have been painted and reupholstered. Also, a new marquee has been installed complete with a blade running from the roof down to the top of the marquee. There will be more renovations ahead including upgraded sound and screen maskings. A lot of work has been done to improve the picture and sound already. All of the projection equipment has been repaired or upgraded. Opening night sold out 2 of the shows.
I did a video screening here the other night. They are using the balcony as a projection booth for the original screen. Very strange looking up from there seeing the original seat still in place and chandelier too. I went into the original booth and was attacked by pigeons. The projectors are not there but everything else is still in place including tons of very old trailers and film.
True but they said that this store was supposed to be opening to the public as a retail store many months ago. I also dont remember any warehouse with front rollup gates and full displays in the window. It doesnt make sense. Also, what about the carpet store that was there. I think it was there for a year or two with no activity. Maybe longer. I dont buy it. Sorry. I agree with the maintenance statement, although work needed to be done on the front long before they actually did it.
A couple of thing here……First of all, Neil, I am not trying to start an arguement here but this store is NOT open for business. I called them again today. They told me that they are NOT open and they dont know when they will open. They would give me no other information. Does anyone other than me, live in the neighborhood, that can give some more info on this place. Like I said, I pass by this place everyday and the gates have NEVER been up. I’m not talking about the roll up gate on the side. That has nothing to do with it. If you think thats there main entrance, then something is wrong here. Something very strange is going on here. This is twice in the last 7 years or so that a company has renovated this place, filled it with product, and let it stand like that for a year or so with no activity. As far as the maintenance of this building goes, they have done nothing to maintain this place until the carpet store rented it. It sat for years without anything being done to it.
Sorry to say this but…………that makes no sense. How come the gates have not come up one time if they have been open since November? Everytime I call them, they say they will be opening soon. I pass the building twice a day. They are NOT open.
Ed
This is the second time in about 7 years that this has happened to this building. First it was the carpet store that fixed up the place, loaded it with carpet and stuff, then never opened. It sat for a year or two with no signs of anything. Now, the martial arts store. I called them in early September and they said they would be opening in two months. Nothing has happened yet. There is no activity during the day at this building. I don’t know what is going on with this place, but it is very strange.
I was a relief projectionist in the mid 90’s. The only reminder of the old theater is in one of the booths. If you lift out the ceiling tiles, there is half a starcase that leads to nowhere. Probably to the old balcony. Still has carpet on it.

Ed, Grand Ave. is now a quad and a half….LOL
5 and 6 are upstairs
LOL Greg
Yes it IS FINALLY opened..LOL…..took them long enough.
I’ll take them next time I’m there.
Yes, the Beekman room is now theater #1. The original balcony. The beekman signs are on either side of the screen, fully functional with neon.

They will probably take the equipment out and use it for another theater.

I used to do tech screenings there years ago and wondered what the hell was making that noise. Then I realized it was indeed the subway. lol
