moviebuff82 commented about AMC Magic Johnson in LA to close, be renovated; will reopen under new operator on Jun 16, 2010 at 4:06 pm

I’m sure the real Magic Johnson would be upset with the new name.

moviebuff82 commented about Ad revenue for movie theaters rises on Jun 16, 2010 at 4:05 pm

This is good news. More money means more ads in the theaters. I was at the AMC in Rockaway awhile ago, and alongside the usual preshow fare, they would insert a local ad for a restaurant or a local place near the theater, which is convienient. Clearview also does the same thing for Mansfield and other cinemas.

Speaking of TS3, RealD will provide smaller 3D glasses for children who attend the movie with their parents who will wear the normal glasses. This is good news since younger kids might have a hard time seeing a 3D image with the big glasses over their small eyes. What’s next…3D contact lenses? LOL. I hope Toy Story 3 brings families, teens, and adults back into the movies after a bad May this year. After the movie, Toy Story fans will buy Toy Story merchandise at the Disney store at the mall as well as other places that sell Toy Story stuff.

any word on if any of the digital screens have been upgraded to 7.1 for Toy Story 3 this coming weekend? I know most of the screens at this theater have Dolby EX since it first opened.

Only days away from Toy Story 3, which will dethrone the Karate Kid from the box office even though the remake of the 1984 film has gotten great reviews and even packed a house full of martial arts students from a local club at one showing. I can’t stand these remakes and sequels, I’m waiting for something original, like Inception. Slimshady, I know that essex green is the closest theater to go all digital, hopefully this one and its smaller non-stadium seating brother in East Hanover get the 4ks.

moviebuff82 commented about IMAX and AMC to develop more IMAX-lite theaters for 2011 on Jun 7, 2010 at 11:54 am

thanks for the advice john, although my dad warned me not to go to the IMAX theater in Rockaway because it’s a rip-off. When I go see a movie in rockaway in regular, i usually sit near the guardrails above the non-stadium seating aisle and right in the middle although the 35mm picture is a bit blurry than sitting all the way back. If it’s a flat film, it’s immersive. Same goes for a scope film, even though the screens at Rockaway that show scope are a bit smaller than Clearview’s.

It’s already June, so three more months until Rockaway no longer shows 35mm film in 13 of its 16 screens.

Looks like Shrek will still be number 1 again at the box office for the third straight weekend this summer, edging Tony Stark as the top draw for moviegoers this summer. One reason is that it’s in 3-D as well as Imax, the other is that the other new movies looks like crap. This coming weekend looks just as bad, with two movies remakes of popular 80’s pop culture, the A-Team, and The Karate Kid, both none of which will match the bigness that is Toy Story 3. Another original movie to look forward to is Inception. I don’t care for the third Twilight movie even though I’ve seen the first two. JJD, any word on if Rockaway might get the same dining stuff as Bridgewater?

When Toy Story 3 comes out, AMC will introduce the $5 movie plan, which goes into effect at all AMC theatres including this one and those that were acquired from Kerasotes. Maybe this thing will bring people back to the movies this summer.

Shrek Forever After will have its last legs in 3D for the next two weekends before Buzz Lightyear and Woody take over the two RealD 3D screens, the Liemax, and a 35mm screens or two. I can’t wait for this movie!!! I saw the first one at the Allwood before Clearview took over in 35mm Dolby Stereo, and the second one at Clifton Commons in 35mm Dolby EX.

moviebuff82 commented about Beverly Center Cinemas Closing Tonight on Jun 3, 2010 at 11:39 am

What a shame. No multiplexes with 10 screens or more have shut down in NJ since the Tenplex opened in Paramus, which, like the Beverly Connection and the Triplex, were run by Cineplex Odeon. Only Menlo Park and Newport Centre are the only CO theaters still running.

moviebuff82 commented about AMC not renewing lease on Grand 24 in Dallas on Jun 3, 2010 at 11:37 am

AMC was the first to run two 6-screen theaters in and out of a major shopping center in NJ when the 6-screen Rockaway Outer Theatres opened in early 1981 alongside the then four-year old Rockaway Inner Theatres, which closed in the mid-90’s when it underperformed against the larger Outer 6, which closed in 2002. AMC also managed a 10-plex in Morristown before lending it to Clearview. The chain wouldn’t have another theater in Morris County until AMC took over the Loews East Hanover when the merger began in 2006, and what would’ve been the second Loews theatre in Rockaway that is now an AMC 16-plex.
