bigjoe59….I posted the link because as Mr Louis says in the article it is the most common problem he encounters in other (than Alamo I assume) theaters. The only sure way to find out if CM was projected dimly at the Orpheum would be to see it at another theater and compare. Or ask the manager at the Orpheum if films projected there meet the industry standard of 14 foot-lamberts. I’ve only been to an Alamo theatre once and it was to see one of the Star Wars films a couple of years ago in 3D. It was the best projected digital/3D film I’d ever seen. At the neighborhood theatre I go to regularly here in SF, digital film brightness is inconsistent and sometimes disappointing.

Hello-

thanks for your replies about the darkness issue. so is stevenj saying that CM wasn’t filmed that dark its just how the Orpheum was screening it? I ask the question again since the Orpheum manager said in the case of “Solo” that that was the way the film was shot and not a result of their screening of it.

AMC sucks for that

Mark Louis, Director of Presentation for the Alamo Drafthouse theater chain, was interviewed on the linked website about screen brightness, masking, 3D etc. noting that “all digital movies are supposed to be projected at 14 foot-lamberts, an industry standard established by a group called DCI. In practice, many theaters fall short of that level of illumination.” You can read the entire article here:

And my DVD blu ray of “SOLO” seemed to be filmed through Clam Chowder.

And there is no projectionist so even if it could be fixed it wouldn’t be.

Hello-

in terms of ridethectrain’s comment. as I said my screening of CM at the Orpheum was way to dark in spots to the point in a few scenes you couldn’t see exactly what was happening. so is ridethectrain’s comment to infer that the projectionist at the Orpheum was incorrectly screening the film? I had the same problem at the screening I attended last Spring of Solo-A Star Wars Story. I questioned the manager and he said it was the film not the way they were showing it.

I meant that you should ALSO post a comment on the Orpheum page, because it would be reporting a condition at the theater where it actually occurred. Other users of that page may wish join the conversation and describe their own experiences…

Hello-

to Mike’s 3/12 comment. what would have been the point of posting the Captain Marvel darkness question on the Orpheum’s page if I was asking moviegoers at this theater what their experience was?

It’s just a regular ICEE machine. They usually have 3-4 Coca-Cola Company flavors per machine, Fanta might be one of them.

Yes AMC offers unlimited refills for their Freestyle machines IF it’s a large fountain drink. So small or regular drinks aren’t eligible for those refills. At least that’s what AMC customer service told me. The difference is literally pennies though between sizes.

Do AMC offer unlimited refills for the Freestyle Coke machines? Also, is that a Fanta Frozen (aka Tango Blast in the UK) machine that I see in the latest photos uploaded by @ridethetrain ? Since the introduction of a Sugar Tax (March 2018) in the UK, all Tango Blast drinks are only available as Sugar-Free which taste awful. Guess you guys still get the full-fat versions which taste way nicer?

BigJoe, you should post your comment/question about the brightness of the image on the AMC Orpheum 7 page

Thanks for those pictures. The renovated concession stand looks really great. They seemed to even have replaced the carpet.

Perhaps that’s just one step to a transition to recliners… But that’s just wishful thinking.

Just uploaded pictures of the three new refreshment stands at Lincoln Squre. Also the Loews Theatres removed outside with AMC.

Hello-

a two part question for anyone who saw Captain Marvel at this theater this past weekend. i saw the film at the 12p.m. screening at the Loews Orpheum. was your movie quite dark? half the time i couldn’t see what was happening. and second how full was your auditorium? the 12p.m. screening at the Orpheum was almost empty.

Hello-

does anyone know what has become of The Current War starring Benedict Cumberbatch which was supposed to get released the Fall of 2017?

Hello-

to markp thanks for your reply of 12/27. I am assuming that when a film’s release date is announced its basically shot edited and in the can. for instance the Summer Movie section which the NY Times had the first Sun. in May has Under the Silver Lake opening the last week of June. in fact when i saw Angels in America Andrew Garfield( who i’m a big fan of) confirmed the film was opening the last week of June. but it was pulled from release and yet to open in Dec. the Fall Movie preview section in the Sun. N Y Times the 2nd Sun. in Sept. stated as much. but the film never opened. people who go see blockbuster/super hero films 2 to 3 tend not to see art house films. so what happened to UTSL? continually shifting release dates is NEVER a good sign.

The Dolby Cinema’s projector is much brighter than the old projector yet still has the Dolby Atmos audio in the theater in addition to the AMC Signature Recliners that rumble with the action. Also, they removed the SDDS DTS and Dolby decoders from the screen and put in an Atmos system. Theater #2 is now the 70mm screen.

Hello-

thanks for the reply. what I meant to ask was how different a moviegoing experience is the Dolby Cinema from the Loews Auditorium?

digital3d
digital3d on January 7, 2019 at 2:40 pm

The “Loews” part of the theater’s name seems to have been fully retired now, the amc website has updated it to “AMC Lincoln Square 13”. https://www.amctheatres.com/movie-theatres/new-york-city/amc-lincoln-square-13

Hello-

i haven’t had the chance to see a film in the new Dolby Cinema
yet. to which just how different is it from its former life
as the Loews Auditorium?

bigjoe59, the brochures were on a table just outside the entrance to cinema 2. As for the movies that never come out, sometimes the movie needs to be reworked or the film companies just keep pushing it back to maybe not compete against too many blockbusters.
