Hi Keith, apologies for the late reply, yes I began my cinema career at the Queens in 1974, and also worked at the Odeon too..
There is a page related to the Queens on C.T. plus some of my photos, it was a great place to work, the giant screen, using 70mm projection (philips DP70 Mechs) yeah remember Close Encounters in 1978…
I`ve uploaded some photos taken of Odeon Fittings just recently found,these were thought to have gone with the building, but have survived in fair condition.
This photo was taken by me on the last day before closure, the cleaners were, understandably upset that not being able to carry on at this great cinema… Feb 16th 1980.
Hi Peter, Good to hear from you, sorry for the delay in replying… yeah I loved working at the Queens, great cinema to be part of, I began my job here 1974, before transferring to the Odeon in 1975 but came back following training, 1977, You must have worked around 1965, to show SOM… I understand they had two prints as the first, lost colour over time.. How long did you work here… Derek Passed away in 1995, Cec too around 2007 I think ? did you know Bill Furness (chief Odeon ) Brian is still around… Best. Neil.
Hi Peter, It was the Eidophor, Projector..
The name Eidophor is derived from the Greek word-roots eido and phor meaning ‘image’ and ‘bearer’ (carrier). Its basic technology was the use of electrostatic charges to deform an oil surface. Yeah recall the screenings but was`nt on many.
Goodness putting up to date Digital Equipment into an old 50s cinema such as the Grand would really look out of place, someones bright idea no doubt, probably thinking it would save money…. aye right (Wrong)
Hi Peter, nice to see another name added to the projection team, I began my job at the Queens in the box in 1974, until closure… I worked with Derek (super guy) and Brian, and Theo. I knew Cec who worked with me at the Odeon. John Henderson I recall too.. Have you any pics of the Queens.
Hi I worked with a lady at the Odeon Newcastle/Tyne who was an assistant manager with Peter Talbot, who was called Nicky Dirom, would this be the same lady you mentioned in your text ?
Glad to hear the Parkway is still going strong, and may it continue, what ever happened to Andy Baker and the original projectionists, when it was still Odeon..
I was the one who organised the paper coverage.. as nothing would have been done to celebrate this milestone…. such a shame the great building herself is`nt still around…
Remember going to see my favourite war movie, “where eagles dare” around late seventies, in one of the smaller screens, presentation was terrible, the picture was dark, the sound was weak… Im sure Mannie wasnt on that day……
Managed to get the ceiling lights working for this photo, as they had been turned off, for some reason… They looked spectacular without the cleaners lights on.. wish we still had the original ceiling light fitting which hung down in the middle..
The side walls were enhanced by a series of pilasters which ran the full length of the wall, and terminated in light fittings. these were topped with acanthus leaves, above originally were art deco figures holding scarves..

Queens Auditorium, around 1979, the original projection ports from the three screen cinerama days can still be seen on either side..

Would the old projection box be still intact today ? with all the equipment in situ

I can recall a chap named Colin Morrice who worked at the Odeon Aberdeen, anyone remember him…
