What a shame. This place was great The owners were doing alright but the plaza owners wanted to make room for a Lowe’s and it was going to use the lower level for the heavy material sold at the store. The would not agree to renew the movieworld lease fools 3+ years later and Lowe’s never showed up. Douglaston plaza is close to being a ghost town now.
Just added in the photos sections, grand opening ad when UA took control of Movieworld on April 22, 1988
Please update, theatre open June 3, 1983 and the largest theatre was 300 and the smallest was 115
Closing on July 3rd with a celebration party on the 2nd. Please share any pictures/stories/memories on facebook or here. https://www.facebook.com/movieworlddouglaston/
Closing in July, according to this news report
This one always seemed like a small theater, and despite being small it has multiple screens, its one of the few of the original theaters in the area that is still around and hasn’t changed that much over the years.
No showings before 3:15 this week, they always had showings at 1 PM or so and decent audiences.
There is a banner up at entrance to the theater saying Movieworld will remain open.
Not closing in April, bot possibly within a year or so. City is holding up the permits…will take time to get approved if at all.
Here is the link to the story: http://qns.com/story/2017/01/04/douglaston-macys-movie-theater-move-lowes-home-improvement-looking-move/
The cinema is reportedly closing in April, along with the Macy’s that is the shopping center’s retail “anchor.”
Additional night time entrance photo and interior image uploaded. What Spartan auditoriums.
New seats in all theaters just added.
My friends and I recently discovered this movie theatre. While it’s nothing to write about, décor-wise, it still has a sort of small town movie theatre feel to it.
They recently went all digital…still offer the lowest pricesI have seen around here.
The website is back up, they have all pictures playing and the coming soon column with Iron Man 2, Robin Hood, Shrek 4 Ever After, Just Write and Letters to Juliet.
Columbia won’t allow it. Its the same at the joint I work at here in New Jersey. I think after 4 weeks they will allow bargain days, but by then the movie is dead anyway.
How come Columbia/Sony pictures never have bargain rates? I might be wrong but I think this same deal goes with the Main Street Flushing theater also,
The newspaper has the new Star Wars cartoon advertised as playing here in the IMAX format. Does this theater have the capabilty of doing that now. I also notice that though the Dark Knight made 26 million last weekend it is no longer here, nor in Sunnyside or the Flushing Main Street. Why would they all drop a still potent box office film?
Here is that story before the link stops working.
Movieworld to return

To those moviegoers who were shocked when the Movieworld multiplex theater in the Douglaston Plaza shopping center abruptly closed – fear not, your summer is saved.
The seven-screen picture palace has scheduled its grand re-opening for Friday, June 27, managed by an independent partnership of local entrepreneurs, according to partner Mark Serale. “We’ll be showing a variety of films for kids and adults,†Serale said.
Their opening bill includes the new Disney film “Wall-e†on two screens, along with summer fare from kid-friendly “Kung Fu Panda,†and comedy “Get Smart†to explosive thrillers “The Hulk†and “Wanted†to “Sex and the City.â€
“We only signed the lease about three weeks ago,†said Serale. “We’ve put a state-of-the-art digital sound system in all seven theaters, and all new seats in three of them,†he said, adding, “The others will be getting new seating soon.â€
The group had sought to take over the theater when the previous operator “walked away,†almost three months ago, according to Serale, but were rebuffed at first. “The landlord called us back about a month ago saying it was available, so we took it.â€
In order to get back into operation as soon as possible, management concentrated on sprucing up and put in a whole new “caf/†service bar.
“We’ll be serving premium Italian ices, gelati, ice cream and pastries under the ‘D’Angelo’s of N.Y.C.’ label,†said partner Sal Corrente. “These are family recipes being made here in the city,†he said. “You can make an evening of it or even book a party, right here.â€
Managing partner Jay Levinson already operates a movie theater on Long Island. “We grew up in Roslyn,†said his brother Stuart, also a partner, “We love this location – it’s like our back yard.â€
Serale, who grew up in Fresh Meadows, expressed excitement at the chance to offer Queens some of what’s been missing in film entertainment.
“We have several ideas, such as morning shows for moms, where they can bring their stroller right into the theater,†he said, adding. “They deserve the break.â€
“We also want to have something of an ‘art house’ here, showing films that you’d otherwise have to go to Manhattan to see,†he said.
Among their ideas, management wants to bring back “classic 70 millimeter films in stereo,†like “Lawrence of Arabia†and “West Side Story,†and would “love to have midnight showings of cult films.â€
Serale admits that some of their planned innovations, like digital projection to match the digital audio, will have to wait until after the summer movie season, or, like late night showings, would involve negotiations.
“We signed a long lease and we’re in it for the long haul,†he promised.
Didn’t Movieworld play The Queen, There Will Be Blood, Bride and Prejudice and a few other films that didn’t play say a 1000 theaters at their widest? They also played March of the Penguins which I saw there.
Foreign/Art house movies will be a great addition to movieworld. They were playing Indian films on one of their screens during the weekends and pulling huge crowds of Indian families from Bellerose and Floral park. Whatever to keep the theater at afloat. Now if they can follow the path of the Kew Garden cinema’s footsteps in keeping a clean and modern theater.
thank you Warren I had a google news arlert an delet before i could cut and paste
