Back in the 1950’s it may have shown Spanish double features.

The building that house the Marcy is no more, it’s been demolished. I had planned to take some pics from the Jamaica-bound J platform but I didn’t get the chance.

Update: The clothing store, Rainbow, is closing this location. I wonder if they will tear these building down? I will try and post a picture.

I am wondering how long before they tear this down for new construction. The bodega that was next door for almost 50 years recently closed.

I remember taking the then B53 bus (now the Q54) to Bridge Plaza to transfer to the M39 to cross the Williamsburg Bridge. I was a kid and I remember the marquee to the Marcy Theater.

There was a mention above about the Edison theatre. I have a vague recollection of the name, but cannot recall the location. There does not appear to be a CT page at present. I suspect that it was not the site at the Edison Hotel on West 47th St. where Oh Calcutta played on and on, and is now the site of the Edison Ballroom.

I wonder what if any part of the old interior is intact in the medical building it is used for now.

In 1963, the Marcy was operated by Harold Goldman and David Sanders. Their office was on West 44th Street in NYC. Other theaters operated by Goldman-Sanders at the time were the Edison, Metropolitan and Studio, all in Manhattan.

Dear Tantive7,
I grew up in Williamsburgh, I lived on Penn Street near Bedford Ave. The moviehouse you are talking about was in fact the Williamsburgh Theater next to it was Stevens, you could buy Ice Cream Cakes and Soft serve Ice Cream, also Charlotte Rouse cakes and a lot more…..The Marcy theater’s entrance was on Marcy and Broadway. There was a Rexall Drug store next to the entrance to the theater. The Marcy as I remember it was a small theater. The YMCA was across the street on Marcy Ave. The Johnathan Williams Houses were built across the street. Across from the Marcy facing Broadway (west) was
a newsstand and across from the newsstand was a Bar. I remember Woolworths, I went there all the time and next to it was a Thom McCan shoe store..Do you remember Laskas Florist in the middle of the Block on Broadway between Marcy and Havemeyer.I know the owner named Neil..We used to get free flowers, whenever we went into the
store.. Do you also remember the concord Cafeteria and the Bowling Alley above it on Broadway between Havemeyer and Roebeling Street..It sure was fun growing up in Williamsburgh in the 50’s and the 60’s…anniegirl

Here’s a photo of the March Theater building taken this past March. I forgot to post the link here back when I took the photo. The building is still there and is currently a clinic. I don’t remember what the right side of the building is:

Good Morning Bway
I had to say this because I lived there,That’s all wrong?? There was never a theater there,The RX Pharmacy and the Unimed have been there since I was little..The only thing that has changed is that store on the end that says “Rainbow” That use to be an OTB Betting than it changed into “Favas Shoes” and than it became “Rainbow”,And I know this because across the street was a “Woolworth” and Frenchies Gym and when they closed Woolworth that became Bargin Bazarr.
I’m telling you,There was never a theater there..There were only 2 Theaters I remember in that area. The Commodore and The Marcy Theater.
Which you could cross back and fourth too. Trust me
The Marcy Movie Theater was where I mention,in my last Post,I know this because I use to go there all the time..
I pray I can find this picture..
Thank you again, for letting me share these memories..
You Guys are wonderful..

Good Morning everyone
Growing up in Williamsburg till I was 25 I clearly remember The exact location of The Marcy Theater, that I remembered growing up,and I know this because it was the competing theater next to The Commodore..And I remember how my family would walk across the block to see other film.and than stay on the same Block and walk two block back across the street to The Commodore. and I clearly remember how the Inside of the Theater looked like, too
I say this because I saw
The Game of Death in this theater along with Red Sonja..When I was young. And my Parents took me there to see Spanish Movies Like The Cantinflas Films.and it was next to a bakery, which still stand today..
First The Location, was right next to Discomundo, this is not a good picture, but I can assure you, that it was next to this building,
View link
Now The inside of the theater as you walk in,There was one step and The walls as you walked into the Theater entrance had mirrors, from side to side..Going straight into the theater and the Lobby card post..This is how I remember The TGOD,so vividly in my memories
My neighbor claims she has a picture,I pray to god that she can find it..
If anyone has a picture of it,I would love to see it
When they closed the theater, they turned the whole place into a resturant, and when they closed that,it became what it is today..
I just wanted to share this memory..
Thank you

There were 4 movie houses within a 3 or 4 block area on Broadway. The commodore was on the same side of B'way as the Williamsburg. The Marcy was a few blocks away from the Square. The Commodore was a classy theater in the 30s and 40s.

Dear Astyanax, I went only twice to that Movie theater with my Aunt. It was a rather small moviehouse in the 50’s. I lived on Penn Street in Williamsburgh. We usually went to the Commodore or the Republic. But next to the entrance to the movie was a Rexall Drug Store on the right of the moviehouse and the YMCA was right across the street. Then later on the moviehouse did run Spanish Movies. Sad to say they are all gone, but not in our memory banks anniegirl

Back in the late 50’s there was a large billboard on the Broadway side of the Marcy, which from recent photos seems to be where the family health center now has frontage. The billboard held ads for “big-name” studio releases. I particularly remember the ad for Mel Ferrer’s “Green Mansions”. Since by that time, the Marcy was showing Spanish movies, the ads may have had no direct connection to the theater. The billboard for “Green Mansions” was particularly eye-catching as you were riding on a bus on Broadway.

Here are three views of the Marcy Theatre as seen in June 2006:

This is always a difficult theatre to photograph from the Broadway side due to the El railway and its entrance stairway.

Dear lourom
I do not remember the Aster Movie but I do remember the Chase Buiding. It is sad that it is gone. I also remember the Concord Cafeteria and the Bowling Alley above the cafeteria. Do you remember Jim Diamonds Resturant on Roebeling Street and South 8th Street? right on the Northwest Corner? It was there in the 60’s I used to go to Franks Beauty Parlor on Broadway, the block before Peter Luger’s.

The enterance to the Theater was on Marcy Avenue and South 9th Street. There was a Rexall Drug Store next to the Theater at the time in the 50’s as I remember as a child of 10 and a candy store across the street facing Broadway. Anniegirl

The right side used to be an OTB. But I remember the Marcy Theater before it closed. I never went in because it looked like a small theater and at the age of 10 I did not like what was playing in 1955.Anniegirl louieb’s wife from Williamsburgh.

The Marcy was between the Commodore and The Williamsburg on the other side of the street. I only went to it once, in the early 1950’s because it was renovated afterwards and changed to a spanish format. The theatre was designed like a “V” shape with the front having only about 4 seats with a small screen. I went back in the late 1980’s and it was a shoe store.
