A conversion of a former retail space, The Eros 1 Theatre was opened in 1969, one of several gay male porn cinemas operating in the Times Square area in the mid-1970’s. It operated under several names over the years.
The Eros Theatre closed in 1997.

Here’s that same 1991 screengrab from Hollywood90038’s video footage – now that his link no longer works. Thanks for the permission, H.
BTW, that’s the Capri Theatre’s marquee that can be glimpsed in the foreground of the image above. The Venus Theater is just barely visible behind the Eros. All three were opened between 1968-1969 by Chelly Wilson – who also ran the Cameo and Adonis Theatres on the other side of Eighth Avenue.

This was another Times Square place in the early 70s. Not listed on CT, as far as I could tell.

The bar is now called the Playwright Celtic Pub.
“Gay porn in the 1970s,” I work with Toby Ross, who was a friend of J. Brian’s. Brian helped him out on REFLECTIONS OF YOUTH and Toby talks about him constantly and still believes he was the best gay filmmaker who ever lived. I’m not sure if you knew Toby or not but he also dealt with Chelly. I’m also very curious who you are. I’d love to chat with you about these movies and your work with Brian.

hey ken- thats me in the gray camouflage shirt taking the sign down. the wilson sister sold it to me when they closed.
There were also a few male strippers that would take to the stage once in a while in between the movies, at least in the early 90s. Downstairs in the basement where the restroom was, there was also one single private room with a door, where one of the dancers would be lying down on a bed, waiting to make a “business deal” with a customer.
The Eros opened in 1969, not 1962. The 35 years farewell on the marquee most likely referred to Chelly Wilson’s porn empire and not this location in particular.
